GRUNAU From the minute we turned off the Autobahn outside of Salzburg and into the regional Alps area - I knew I was finally seeing the real Austria and what I had been looking for. The small town of Grunau is unknown and only has a community of only a few hundred, it relies on woodchopping for its industry and has been a cheap ski destination in the winter for tight arsed Italians. It’s essentially only 1 street and as soon as we arrived at our lodge The Treehouse, more people were wishing they were staying here. Sucks to be them! I picked this place since I was looking for places to visit outside the major cities, and for some reason I had always wanted to explore Austria more than anywhere else in Europe. On arrival ... read more

AUSTRIA I absolutely love this country - I nearly stayed here for good . But I'm getting a tad lazy with the blogs so you're getting 2 versions - the cities and the Alps. Happy reading. First stop: SALZBURG Well, my fantasy for 'The Sound Of Music' was finally going to come true. My Eastern Trekker group made our way into Austria from Slovenia and were met by the stunning Austrian Alps and the castle in which Clint Eastwood filmed 'Where Eagle's Dare' movie. We rocked into Salzburg and went on a walking tour starting through the Mirror belle gardens as sung through by the great Julie Andrews and those pesky Von Trapp kids. While we didn't have time to do an official tour, we made our way to the some of the sights on foot ... read more

Europe » Czech Republic » Prague May 21st 2010

The Czech Republic. I’ve always wanted to go to the Czech Republic. So many people have recommended the bohemian Prague experience and beer, and the gothic Chesky Krumlov that I just had to go. So I had to make my way from Croatia to somewhere near where I could start my Busabout hop on/hop off thing so I took an Eastern Trekker trip that went through Slovenia (my last blog), Salzburg (sound of music fantasy) and stopped at both Cesky Krumlov and ended in Prague. Too easy. My Eastern Trekker bus headed to Cesky Krumlov from Salzburg through the beautiful Alpine scenery in no time at all. We unpacked into a cute bed and breakfast on a farm just 2km outside the town and we braved the rain and wandered around the old Castle that dominates ... read more

Slovenia. A small country I knew nothing about apart from it being boarded by Croatia, Austria and Italy and had some Alps going for it and a pretty river. But I soon found out that this place and it’s people are so beautiful. I soaked up as much as possible and can’t wait to come back. Our Eastern Trekker group made the boarder crossing from Croatia without having to bribe anyone as is known to happen (although part of the European Union for a while the boarders are still in dispute). First we stopped off in the capital Ljubljana for a quick poke around the pretty city, but being a Sunday not much was happening. So we made our way to the Alps area and Bled where we were to stay for a couple of nights ... read more

Europe » Croatia » Dalmatia » Split May 17th 2010

Croatia - be prepared - this one is massive. So, a flight from a chilly Denmark brought me to scenic sunshine of Split via the capital Zagreb, passing hundreds of islands which I was trying to enjoy viewing in between having my right ear drum feel like it wanted to burst inside the small plane. Anyway, I may have landed with less hearing for a day or so but got on with the job of knowing my new digs. My hostel was run by Auzzies and is the only one that is situated inside the Palace Walls of which Split is founded on, mind you finding it was a little interesting (of course it was behind the kiosk which blocks the laneway where there is a dead end!). Split is amazing in that is a small ... read more

Copenhagen - Denmark! So, I last left you in Sweden, soaking up my Scandinavian experience and loving being considered a local. I didn’t originally plan on adding in a Danish journey however since I was all the way up there in lap land and predicting that I would love being Scando for a while, I thought I would add an extra cold climate country to explore before I hit the European summer. I caught the high speed X2000 train from Stockholm to Copenhagen which gave me just over four hours of viewing Swedish country side with all those lovely red houses that look like small barns and even a small rain storm and took me straight into the centre of the capital. As I got off the train I recognised 2 young Irish boys (Damian and ... read more

Europe » Sweden May 1st 2010

SWEDEN. The first thing you notice is that the Swedish are very efficient, which is immediately seen from the airport, transport, immigration (come right on in) and I found the people to be the best mannered, polite and friendly, but also laid back like us Auzzies. And with my blonde hair, blue eyes and white skin, I fit right in and was often being mistaken for a local Swede. In fact I strangely understood most of what was being said to me by people thinking I was Swedish, just not able to respond so well, so I held my watch to the persons face when asked the time and when being asked directions I just pointed in the direction they were headed and gave them a big 'thumbs up'. Actually, I leant more of the language ... read more

Scotland! Edinburgh! I love it! I'm not sure why though, it's even more Grey than London - but there is something about this place that sits well with me enough to want to move here (except the strong winds - you can piss those right off). Just over 4 hours train ride from London and I arrived in the centre of the Scottish capital - Edinburgh. Again, with all the historic buildings and history (but slightly less looked after than London). So far so good with the dodgy Bradley ankles verses centuries old cobbled streets (now I've cursed myself). The incredible Edinburgh Castle dominates the city - and it's pretty damn impressive! I didn't realise how volcanic this area was until walking around it and viewing it from the top of The Nelson monument (endless spiral ... read more

London - I made it. After an extra week in New York due to the Iceland Volcano that I cannot spell or pronounce, I finally made it to London - just a week late. So, I continued on my journey as planned, just missing out on the week in Ireland. LONDON. After pulling an all-nighter flight again, I resumed night shift mode and with the ease of the Oyster Card travel system, I dumped my backpack at my run-down but centrally located Piccadilly backpackers hostel, grabbed a map and a coffee and went walkabout (it is here that I will tell you I hate those suitcases on wheels things that are everywhere - that's not backpacking people!) When I first emerged from the underground, what hit me most was the sight (and age) of all the ... read more

North America » United States » Massachusetts » Boston April 20th 2010

Hi Kids, Well, flying to the United Kingdom from the USA didn't plan out as expected due to the ridiculous volcano in Iceland. With no option but to be grounded in America, I decided to become a temporary resident with the Medina's of Fair Lawn, New Jersey and explore some of the East Coast of the USA. Staying in New Jersey, I went about life as I would if I lived in Oz. I shopped, I helped renovate a new bedroom and ensuite of the home I was staying in (including a few trips to Home Depot which is Bunnings Warehouse on steroids), and I even went to the gym a few times (and not just because my trainer Emma is reading this blog but because I wanted/needed to sweat off all the foods unique to ... read more
