Julia Bradley

I'm off exploring again, this time to the weird and wonderful area of South East Asia.

In this 4 week race I'll be checking out Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam to discover all it has to offer, and of course eat my way around these countries.

This time it's one month off work and a break from giving people a nice green tracksuit to wear and exploring South East Asia by plane, train, boat and kyack.

So, on my 30 days without communicating with all of you, I'll try to use this blog site to document my predicted travel disasters, show a few photos of my weird and wonderful adventure and prove to you all i'm still alive.

Enjoy,

JULIA

Apologies with the delay of this last blog - I think I was in denial of the holiday being over and back into reality. THAILAND - The Holiday.... After three months of planes, trains, buses and boats, and pounding the streets around the world in a new city/country every few days, I chose to use the stop over in Thailand for a bit of R & R before I returned to the crazy and busy life that is mine. So I extended the time in Thailand to nearly a week to do just that. The original plan (I seem to have used that a bit this trip - perhaps I should do less planning and more spare of the moment as that seemed to work out the best!) was to spend a few days in Bangkok ... read more

BERLIN My last European destination! Sad that the trip was closing to and end, but happy to finally explore the wonderful city of Berlin. I was more than happy to leave Amsterdam and hopped on my last bus journey to one of the cities I had most anticipated. And what a great city to end my European adventure. The long journey to Berlin took me out of The Netherlands and soon to the old checkpoint of 'Marienborn' which has pretty much been left deserted for the last few decades, and gave me a small insight into the gravity of the restrictions formerly in place. So into Berlin I arrived, past many an historic sight I will get into soon, and off at Alexanderplatz where I was having a blonde moment as it took me a ... read more

The Netherlands. Holland. Amsterdam. Someone asked me the other day is there one place I didn’t like from all the travelling I’ve been doing over the last three months, and I couldn’t think of one town or city I didn’t enjoy. And then I came to Amsterdam..... I don’t mean to be harsh, it’s just that it wasn’t my cup of tea. For starters, I wasn’t supposed to come to Amsterdam, but as happens with travelling plans don’t always work out. The plan was to come to The Netherlands and go directly to The Haige to stay with my old flatmate Roybn who is currently working there for the UN, but at the last minute she was required to go to Lebanon for work so I decided to still come to Holland and check out ... read more

BRUGES The medieval and tiny town on Bruges in northern Belgium was just the chill out time I needed after keeping a hectic schedule of late (so this blog is short I promise). I took a bus from France to Belgium and after a few hours I was in sleepy Bruges, which thankfully was not as gruesome as the film ‘In Bruges’. Built on waterways, cobbled stone laneways and town squares, I went exploring on arrival in shorts and thongs determined that the cold weather would go away (don’t you hate it when you’re wrong). I was mega tired but continued to wander the streets in search of what the Belgians are known for - beer, waffles, chocolate, fries, The Smurfs and TinTin (aka Prime Minister Rudd lookalike). So, while walking I found myself not where ... read more

PARIS Paris was never really high on my ‘must see’ list in Europe, more on the ‘should see’ list. I haven’t ever been one of the girls who have dreamt of going to Paris with a loved one to be proposed to and do all those typical lovey dovey things, more so to go for the history, buildings and art of the place. So, thankfully I’m here on my own, not in love, and as a result it turned out I liked it more than I expected. Another early start and 4 different trains (the efficient Swiss rail service and the superfast but not on time French train) took me on a comfy and scenic but long journey (and brief stop for lunch in Basel) into Paris. And as luck would have it upon arrival in ... read more

LAUTERBRUNEN - SWITZERLAND I’ll admit right away that this is a country I have most wanted to visit, and I’m annoyed at myself that I didn’t do it justice in exploring more of it due to time restraints and having to come back to something called ‘work’ soon. But what I did see I absolutely adored and wish to return one day to soak up its natural beauty and sights. I left the sun of Italy bright and early, back to travelling all on my own again (which I love) and realised I slightly underestimated the length and time it would take to get to my next destination - Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland. I had chosen Lauterbrunnen due to its gorgeous mountain scenery, adrenaline sports, eternal snow capped mountains, and backpacker friendliness in one of Europe’s most expensive ... read more

FLORENCE, PISA & CINQUE TERRE The rest of my Italy experience all wrapped into one blog so here goes people. I last left you guys after a busy time in Rome, and I kept up the same hectic pace for a bit longer. I caught the bus from Rome to Florence with a couple of short stops along the way. The first place to explore was the tiny town of Orvieto which is only accessibly via a funicular (hillside tram thing - which was fun) since it is basically a large volcanic rock and has these old caves to explore. A 1hr guided tour showed us through some of the caves, of which 400 are known to be beneath the town and were spared by bombings during the wars as via a written agreement with the ... read more

ROME Seriously, who hasn’t wanted to explore Rome, and I wasn’t disappointed by what I saw, just the lack of time to see it (guess that means I’ll be making a return trip then). Starting off, an awesome sunny day (too nice to be travelling, but anywho) took me from Venice to Rome (via Anconna), and I got into Rome in the early evening. I immediately dumped my pack and was joined by 2 others to head straight into the centre of Rome for dinner then onto a night walking tour (1: Because I couldn’t wait, 2: for immediate city orientation and 3: seeing this beauty by street lights). While wondering the skinny cobbled stoned streets, I learnt more history about artists and sculptures such as Bernini and Michelangelo, saw some of the major sights ... read more

Venice & San Marino. Well kids, the trip from Munich to Venice went through some stunning scenery around the Austrian/Italian Alps border, and a brief stop in the Austrian ski resort town of Innsbruck. However, I arrived into Venice in pouring rain in the early evening (which was not a great start to my 10 days in Italy), however it was not worth heading into the centre of Venice that night from where I was staying. So it was a good chance to plan the next day, catch up with some friends over Pizza and wine who had already been in Venice and were leaving the next day, and also a time to people watch the ‘Topdeck’ toga party and various drunken fights that seemed to happen (they were pathetic - I’ve seen way better). Sunday, ... read more

MUNICH My first spot to stay in Germany (Berlin is my last in a few weeks - but of course I’m doing things all over the shop - Bradley style). This one is short and sweet I promise kids! Arrived to a grey looking Munich. Priorities - dump pack, and straight to beer hall number 1 - St Augustine’s. I met up with a few other solo travellers and made our way to St Augustine’s Beer Garden for beer steins and pork knuckle - and was not disappointed - I demolished them. I had a formal lesson in how the locals do their thing here until the thunderstorm decided to piss down with rain and we made it inside the beer hall down into the cellar (which resembled a dungeon). I’m loving these type of beer ... read more
