Downtown Ljubljana
Pretty quiet on a sunday Slovenia.
A small country I knew nothing about apart from it being boarded by Croatia, Austria and Italy and had some Alps going for it and a pretty river. But I soon found out that this place and it’s people are so beautiful. I soaked up as much as possible and can’t wait to come back.
Our Eastern Trekker group made the boarder crossing from Croatia without having to bribe anyone as is known to happen (although part of the European Union for a while the boarders are still in dispute). First we stopped off in the capital Ljubljana for a quick poke around the pretty city, but being a Sunday not much was happening. So we made our way to the Alps area and Bled where we were to stay for a couple of nights at a place run by an ex-Slovenian ice hockey team member ‘Jani’ who must have a regular supply of happy pills because he is just so happy all the time.
A walking tour of the small village of Bled and we all soon knew we’d like it here. Unfortunately myself and a few others on the bus had come down with a
mountain views
Man it was cold up here with the wind cold so had an early night for once (not before I made myself familiar with the local pub down the road) as the day ahead of us was to be massive. Most of us on the trip booked in for an all day adventure trip which was just fantastic. Our energiser bunny adventure guides took us hiking up the Alps, snow tobogganing races, beautiful waterfalls, hearty lunch (deer goulash tastes yum), white water rafting, more hiking across suspension bridges (where we temporarily misplaced the 2 Welsh girls) and stopped for the crazy people to jump 12 meters off a bridge into the 8 degree water (yes, I was one of the 4 crazy people). It was amazing and literally took my breath away with the icy water in a bikini. And since the Kiwi national Kayak team were randomly walking past I had to show them what I had (as the only aussie to jump), my top stayed on and it was worth it. Suprisingly, one of the most fun things to end the day was putting our vans on the car train that went through the mountains while having a well deserved beer. I know Slovenia is only a
Mountain goat riding
When in Slovenia...... great view though small country but I think we covered so much of the upper area just in that day, and it was strange going from freezing in snow ball fights to bikini’s and shorts.......
Anyway, after all that hard work we earned our pizza and beer that night but my head cold was getting the better of me (probably not helped by the swim but when in Bled....) so I popped back to our apartment and popped on the tv to see ‘Crime Investigation Australia’ on and host Steve Liebman talking from my office at Surry Hills and leaning against my desk - weird.
The next morning in Bled we were blessed with sunny skies so myself and Josh from my group hired mountain bikes and cycled around beautiful Lake Bled ad around the famous Church of Assumption before hiking up to Bled Castle. The views all around were fantastic. It’s the type of place you can do all the crazy sports, or just chill around the beautiful lake and have coffee and admire the view. It nearly feels untouched like much of the small villages we went through with their stunning churches
So, Slovenia is just gorgeous and
Church of Assumption
The island church dominates the views of Lake Bled a bit untouched by the mainstream tourist world which is just awesome. It is so picturesque, with lush mountains with snow caps, the gorgeous Emerald River and stunning lakes, churches, chalets and friendly people.
Next stop - techincally SALZBURG but I'm coming back to Austria so you'll next hear from me from The CZECH REPUBLIC!
