The sore throat/cold continues to work itself through our group (I may have been mistaken about contracting it in Ottawa: apparently Bobby from Connecticut arrived with it), and it hit my friend Mark from Vermont today badly enough that he chose not to ride. I awoke to find my throat improved but my chest somewhat affected; in fact I felt bad enough after breakfast that I made a late-game decision not to ride with Joe and the fast group, but instead to ride again with a group led by Micol. There wasn't supposed to be much difference between the two in terms of distance or difficulty, but I was wary of the pace at which the former would proceed on the flats. Riding with Micol also meant I would take in the wine-tasting that was to ... read more

After yesterday's Grand Tour I really didn't think it would be a good idea to go out for the hard ride proposed for the combined Limoncino and Cappuccino Super groups, so I opted for the milder Cappuccino ride. Apparently this was quite a popular sentiment, as so many people signed up for this level that they had to split us into 3 groups to make things more manageable. We had 15 in ours, and while there didn't seem to have been an official selection process our group was strong enough that I think our leader (Micol) decided to take us over a few climbs that some others avoided. Surprisingly these were steeper than I had anticipated (14-16%), albeit brief (on the order of 1-2 km), including one memorable stretch on a very trafficky and winding road ... read more

It had previously been announced that we would have a new guide - Sandor - for today's ride, and we woke to something else that was new as well: blue sky - and it lasted all day (although once on high we could see storms in the hills across the valleys, so it was never clear that our good luck was going to last). While looking through my bag for the clothes to wear in today's ride I was reminded that I had packed a couple of pairs of black socks; they would've been the choice for our wet weather rides had I remembered they existed - duh! Another thing I had forgotten was mentioning that the mystery of how we had missed a turn on day 1 had been solved in conversation at dinner last ... read more

Still smarting from yesterday's experience, I decided I should take along a jacket 'just in case' the weather decided to turn on us. Indeed, although it was neither raining nor cold when we left, the forecast called for a thunderstorm in the afternoon and I knew that either of those conditions might change at any time. In the absence of any storage space in my rental bike's modest seatpost bag (which was filled to capacity with only a spare tube), I was attempting to store/stuff my jacket under the seat between the rails when our guide Bartolo interceded to offer a pro tip, the results of which can be seen in the accompanying (if not very flattering) photo. And then we were off again. Things were pleasant enough for the first 3 hours: although the roads ... read more

Not surprisingly, last night I fell asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow. But I then awoke around 11PM to pee and found myself wide awake, caught in the time transition that accompanies overnight travel to Europe. Similarly, breakfast took some getting used to, starting with the fact that the hotel runs on Italian Time, which is to say things might start somewhat later than advertised, and that the layout of items is rather haphazard, with the result that it took a while to determine how I might (in future) start the day with the nutrition I would like. More distressing was the fact that it had started raining while we were eating, and consequently the day's destination was changed (presumably to avoid major descents that might be hazardous in the wet). There are ... read more

There's never much to say at the start of these endeavours, which is probably a good thing. Having previously scoped out the Air France bus that runs between the Ottawa train station (yes) and Montreal's Trudeau Airport, there was little drama in finding and boarding it, and despite the requisite construction mess at the Dorval traffic circle, I arrived with plenty of time to speed through check-in (no lineup!!??), plod through security, hike the interminable distance past the innumerable shopping opportunities that obviously had never heard of a scent-free environment, and settle in for the long wait until boarding. I had thought my Vermont friends, who provided the impetus for my being on this trip in the first place, were taking this flight but did not see them. Eventually Mark (from Vermont. To avoid confusion I ... read more

The morning started woefully early thanks to my roommate, who rose at the ungodly hour of 5:30 to be certain to comply with our trip coordinator's desire to leave the hotel at 7:30, even though our flight was scheduled to leave at 11:55 and the airport was only a few kilometers away. Everyone else took taxi vans while I simply strapped my bag to my back and pedaled off into the early morning coolness, first stopping at a bakery to pick up what would no doubt be my last authentic croissant for a while before heading to the airport. The ride was terribly uneventful, and not having to deal with any traffic or traffic lights (the bike path follows the shoreline straight to the airport) I arrived at the terminal well ahead of the others, and ... read more

After staying up late following a fine meal (at the end of which I finallygot a chance to have creme brule for dessert) I luxuriated in sleeping in until almost 8:00 before saddling up one more time. The first order of business was determining how long it would take to get to the airport tomorrow (all of 15 minutes), after which I languidly toodled along the seaside bike path, which was already teeming with tourists, taking in the several shades of gorgeous that the Mediterranean presents here. I had toyed with the notion of riding to Monaco, but when the path ended and I was deposited into traffic again, I quickly scratched that idea. It was extremely windy and the bike section of the pathway (there is a separate pedestrian section, although some folks never seem ... read more

Well the cycling part of the trip is over, and despite some very foreboding (or should that be portentous?) skies I am pleased to report that I arrived without getting rained on; whether or not others did as well is yet to be determined, as only 5 of us have arrived so far - but the sun is out now, so perhaps we all will have emerged unscathed. Because the forecast had called for an 80 per cent chance of rain by about 1:00PM I had elected to follow the Garmin-equipped people out of Draguignan to make sure that I got through the urban mess as efficiently as possible (in retrospect, having only just now reviewed our directions, it turns out the latter really weren't complex at all and would have been quite easy too follow ... read more

Geez, suddenly there are only 2 riding days left. How did that happen? What I have learned so far (not all-inclusive): Despite the way food is respected here, smoking is still allowed on patios/terraces - blech! I should not order coffee ice cream for dessert unless I want to remain awake all night Today didn't go quite as planned, but that was a good thing. I had originally intended to take the longer alternate route, and not being too concerned with what I thought was a 22km climb to start the day (as it turned out there were some significant downhill sections interspersed with the climbing to that point, although the first 13km were indeed all uphill) I was the last one to leave the hotel. My plan was to take things relatively slowly and not ... read more
