Somehow this year feels different, although much so far has been familiar: I made the customary wrong turn after leaving the airport (having inadvertently left my directions in my luggage that was being transported in the van. Worse yet, I wasn't even positive I had the name of the hotel right), but according to Google the ride was a whopping 1.9 km so it didn't really affect anything. In fact the distance was so short I hadn't even bothered to don my cycling shoes (nor even take the traditional airport photo), and most of the group decided to walk it (toting the airport baggage dollies with them!). I wheeled into the lobby at 8:30 AM local time, only to discover that I had beaten the others there (no surprise) The hotel did not appear to be ... read more

There was the usual drive to the airport, except this year it didn't pour, traffic in Montreal wasn't bad, and our flight wasn't delayed. In fact there's little to say. So I will say little.... read more

After not much sleep at all I set off to the airport at 3:40AM (the cabs started to arrive at the hotel 15 minutes early and I didn't want to have people need to wait for me when they reached the airport). It was drizzling and I couldn't find my front light, but I was undeterred as I surmised there wouldn't be too much traffic at that hour, and I hoped the lights from the adjacent highway would illuminate the canal-side path sufficiently. I was right about the latter but wrong about the former, at least in Toulouse. After some nervous moments worrying about the state of those I was sharing the road with, I reached the path to Blagnac, where I discovered there was absolutely no street activity of any sort but where the rain ... read more

And so our journey draws to a close. In my remaining hours (I spent a good bit of time catching up on this blog) I will go wander the city, as it seems checking out Cite de l'Espace would take a full day (which I no longer have), and the Airbus tours require booking 48 hours in advance. With luck, tomorrow's forecasted thunderstorms will hold off until I get myself to the airport. Meanwhile, here's a start on explaining the routine I got into over the past 2 weeks. ... read more

What can I say about the final riding day? Again, we were blessed with fine weather and beautiful countryside, once we got out of town. After gathering for the final group shot (I obviously never got the memo about what to wear), we set off in rush hour to try and find our way out of town. After a few abortive attempts we finally emerged and roared over hill and dale, pausing occasionally to let the group coalesce before accepting the inevitable and dropping a couple of slower riders. The rest of us continued on at a brisk pace, separating on the climbs but regrouping for the flats and generally enjoying the day. After a brief stop in Lisle-sur-Tarn where we waited for the Musee Art du Chocolat to open (sadly, I seemed to be the ... read more

Today was our last day of riding hills, and not to be outdone, I ended up adding some extra. Not on purpose. Leaving Millau proved dirt simple, and involved neither hill climbing nor traffic - in fact we descended again into another beautiful morning. Having decided to do the alternate route - even though it added a mere 5km to the nominal distance - I once again set out on my own, and promptly did some extra climbing by misinterpreting what 'continue straight at the roundabout' meant. We had been alerted we would travel under the famous (except to me) viaduc de Millau, and I chose to take the optional side trip to its related Information Centre. I hadn't appreciated that would involve several kilometres of very steep climbing, though, but once started felt compelled to ... read more

There's something to be said when the trip organizer himself elects not to do part of the alternate route - but I didn't know any better at the time (I left before him), and truthfully neither did he as the Internet had had precious little to share about the itinerary he had suggested. So I got to be the trailblazer, and now you get to find out how things went. The day started promisingly enough: overnight rains had subsided and the nearby summits were shrouded in mist that the morning sun was busy burning off as I left Meyrueis. In fact things were so scenic as I left town that I kept stopping almost every few metres to take a picture, and at one point in the climb to Col du Perjuret I noticed to my ... read more

There may yet be something to the notion that I might be getting wiser as I age: this morning I chose to forego the optional 14% climb (although I did elect to ride the remainder of the alternate route). Leaving Mende was also uncharacteristic - there wasn't a lot of traffic to battle, and our route out of town involved a 5km descent to Balsieges rather than the traditional diesel-choked climb. Of course there then followed an unrelenting 5km ascent to earn back all the elevation we had given up (and perhaps more), which culminated in an unanticipated plateau that then gently rose for a further 10km, at which point the road pitched down at 6% for 6km of joy before the floor dropped out and we hurtled to the valley floor at 8%. Then it ... read more

Fears of another bakefest prompted some folks to leave early today - myself included, albeit for another reason: my roomie's snoring kept me from sleeping and since I was already up and still full from last night's megadinner, I figured I may as well hit the road. And what an unexpected day it turned out to be: we had 480 metres more climbing than yesterday, but it was less taxinga col with 284 metres more altitude than the previous one we climbed, but which took less ... read more

It could've been the road conditions (mostly pretty rough). It might have been the heat (~30 degrees). Or maybe there really is something to the notion that when you take a break from prolonged intense activity your body thinks "thank god that's over" and shuts down (which is purportedly why Tour de France competitors still ride on their rest days). More likely it was all of the above plus the 1530m of climbing that made today's ride seem somewhat arduous. Things started off fairly well, with some glorious riding in the (relative) cool of the morning, as I rolled through the valleys/vineyards of Provence. In fact the only negative thing of note (and it lasted only a few minutes) was riding into swarms of gnats so small as to have been invisible (although not tasteless) near ... read more
