Welcome to another beautiful day in France. Following a fitful night (recall yesterday's rooming arrangement) I awoke feeling less than refreshed, and thought it might be prudent not to go looking for any extra adventures today. The plan had been to leave Annecy en masse since the directions appeared somewhat involved, and when the gang (or most of it) eventually left (my thought while waiting for everyone: this is time I could have spent sleeping!), I settled in the rear/midpack so I could have some people to photograph. Early on, however, I caught an incorrect turn made by the lead person (who was relying on GPS) and decided I would be better off being up front, so I led us through town to the lake - hence no photos until we got there. It turns out ... read more

I'm having trouble getting this entry going here, somewhat like this morning: when you start the day with a 6km climb directly from the hotel, there's little opportunity to warm up. Fortunately the grade wasn't outrageous - an average of 5.1% and a maximum of 6.5% - but I still felt stupid after realizing at km 4 that I should have removed my helmet for the ascent and been that much cooler, since the sun was out and it was already quite warm. I felt cheated not being able to get a photo at the top (there was no sign, and the area was wooded), so I had to settle for something on the other side. Today's route choices were a rather pedestrian jaunt direct to Annecy, the path I will describe here, and a more ... read more

With the sun shining and breakfast consumed it was time to get this tour officially started! We stayed together working our way through the city (only occasionally missing a turn) before eventually splitting into smaller groups. Distressingly, the sky soon turned overcast with ominous clouds. At Perouges the group I was with seemed uninterested in exploring the town so I ventured into it alone. Just as I was getting ready to leave, however, everyone appeared: it seemed the guys had had a change of heart and had waited for the rest of the folks to coalesce before entering the village. Since by this time I was getting cold from not riding, I forged on ahead, and didn't see anyone else until the end of the day - which really put a damper on taking photos, as ... read more

Nothing ever goes as planned, but that's what makes life interesting. The good news was that our flight was not affected by French ATC labour action, and the better thing was that we made it to the airport in time despite a late start and getting caught in Montreal rush-hour 'traffic '(it's hard to call something that immobile 'traffic', but it will have to do for now). The trip across the ocean was uneventful but somewhat disappointing as we had anticipated seatback screens with the outside possibility of watching the hockey game; alas it turned out the screens were being phased in as part of a process that will not be complete until 2014, so I settled for sneaking oblique angle views at Life of Pi on the screen across the aisle and several rows down. ... read more
