I took a little tour outside of Mandalay city to visit three towns: Amarapura, Sagaing, and Mingun. Most hotels and hostels know a taxi driver who would be willing to do this for a reasonable price, so it was easy to set up. I went with two other people from my hostel, but I would have gladly paid to do it on my own. I'd been fortunate enough to get information about the tour from the people I met my first day in Mandalay and they assured me that it would be well worth it to bargain for (and maybe even pay a little extra for) the trip to Mingun. Our driver was quite good, very clear about times and keeping on schedule. We started at nine and had a lot to see before sunset on ... read more

My third stop was Mandalay. It's only a short ride from Bagan, easily done by shuttle bus during the day. I met some new friends at my hostel, headed to lunch, and then a few of us went in search of a place that makes gold leaf. According to my friend's guide book, they show you how it's done and explain the whole process. And I'm sure they would have; we went on a holiday and no one was making anything. The lone man in the shop explained it all to us and we left with a pretty good idea what it might have looked like. After a quick rest detour to the mall (for air conditioning and an atm) another friend and I hired a taxi to Mandalay Hill. We could have walked it, but ... read more

Asia » Burma » Mandalay Region » Bagan June 4th 2015

After seven years of living and working in Asia, I've seen a lot of temples. Many say that once you've seen one temple, you've seen them all; there is a lot of similarity between them. But Bagan was unlike anything I'd ever seen before. An area of about 42 square km (16 square miles), it's filled with temples. Temples as far as the eye can see in any direction. Approximately 2200 to be more specific.(There used to be many, many more.) As my Dutch friend and I rode through them, exploring one after another, we repeatedly commented on how surreal it felt. Like we were in a magical place we couldn't have imagined. Or like we were in a dream. Or in a movie. Except that we could actually reach out and touch them, feel them ... read more

Asia » Burma » Yangon Region » Yangon June 1st 2015

I arrived in Yangon after dark, exchanged money at the airport (not a bad rate, actually), and hopped in a cab. My taxi driver sat on the right and drove on the right, the first of many things that would baffle me in this new place. Along the way to my hostel, he pointed out a popular park, a university where someone he knows does something (he's a bit of a mumbler), and a few other sights. He helped me find my hostel since there was no sign, and I climbed a few stairs to wait for the elevator. Next to it a sign read: 4 people max. Either this was a very small elevator or I had better hold my breath and cross my fingers; I never did figure out which it was. My adventure ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Pahang » Cherating April 26th 2015

A few months ago I took my first trip to Cherating and befriended an Australian on extended holiday. He stayed longer than I did, left, and has now returned for a few more weeks. Of course, I jumped at the chance to see him and catch up. And really, how can you go wrong with a beautiful beach nearby? As an added bonus, my friend had spent a lot of time in Cherating, which means he knows everyone. Which means that in a short time, I would too. I arrived Friday evening just before dinner. We went to have some drinks with an ocean view before heading to my favorite ikan bakar restaurant. But they were out of prawns so I ended up with an omelet instead. Luckily, that was the only disappointment of the weekend. ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Pahang April 20th 2015

I've been driving for about twenty years and I've been fortunate enough to only have had one minor fender bender back in my 20s. I've been in a few others (where I wasn't the driver) but none of the were anything serious. And certainly, none of them really scared me. Until today. I was driving home from work on my usual two land highway. It was a beautiful sunny day and quite warm. Suddenly, up ahead, I heard a loud exploding noise. In the oncoming traffic lane was a large lorry truck. Then, seemingly in slow motion, I saw a lorry tire flying across my lane. Right at me. I saw it coming, closer and closer. It seemed really big. My first instinct was to avoid it at all costs. My second instinct was to check ... read more

I love getting email. Well, I love getting emails with news, stories, or a friendly hello. When I saw that I had an email from my friend Candy I was pretty excited. Candy had been one of my closest friends when I lived in Shenzhen and the last time we saw each other was when I traveled to Xi'an in 2012. Candy had written me a short email that can be summed up with, "I'm coming to visit you! I arrive in KL Sunday. I can't wait to see you!" My excitement turned to panic as I realized that Sunday was 3 days away and I had plans to be out of town all weekend! (As luck would have it, I had a speech contest in KL.) When would I prepare or clean? Sufficed to say, ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Wilayah Persekutuan » Kuala Lumpur March 19th 2015

I had one day in KL to see as much as humanly possible. It was hard to choose what was most important. I knew I'd be back eventually, but playing tourist was key for this trip. And it was so hot I didn't really want to spend any more time outside than necessary. I did a fairly good job. I managed to visit the National Mosque, Merdeka Square ("Freedom Square"), see lots of old buildings, do some shopping, and end with a trip up the KL Tower for sunset. At the tower I met some lovely Moroccan women and a German guy. We all decided to get something to drink before dinner. Then I met up a group of guys from my hostel and all of us went to dinner before finding live street music until ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Pahang » Cameron Highlands March 16th 2015

I love hiking. I love getting out there, seeing new things, new sounds, new smells, and learning along the way. When I read that a hike was offered through my guest house I thought it sounded like a great idea. An easy hike up to the top, followed by a hike down into the valley, ending at a tea plantation. About five hours. It sounded relaxing and beautiful. Only the latter was true. To be fair, I haven't gone hiking in a few years. And I've been doing a LOT of driving since moving here. But even then, my definition of hiking doesn't involve the regular use of my hands to stay upright. We started out walking toward the hill we'd climb. It was a beautiful area and our guide was really knowledgable about the plants ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Pahang » Cameron Highlands March 15th 2015

There are several tours offered in Cameron Highlands. Since I was only visiting for two full days and wanted to see everything, I decided an all day, "see everything here" tour was just the thing. I was right. Well, mostly right. The day started out a bit chilly as we all piled into the Land Rover. We drove through a tea plantation (and took early morning photos) before following a narrow, winding road up to the top of the highest peak in Malaysia. We saw several cars driven by drivers not used to the terrain and it made me thankful I'd hired someone with lots of experience and a proper vehicle. (Later, driving out from the plantation, along a windy road barely wide enough for two cars, with no guard rails along the cliffs, I was ... read more
