Saturday I slept late. I was thinking I might get a massage, but they were closed. Again. Probably for the best considering I think the cost is a bit more geared towards tourists than locals. I picked up my batik (it had to dry, etc) and then went to lunch at a restaurant my batik master suggested. The restaurant was buffet style, like what I enjoy at school each day, only bigger. I opted for curried fish, veggies, and my favorite, milk tea. The restaurant was popular and the people watching fantastic. I went to the beach for the afternoon. I took a large bottle of water and a book with me. Of course, the day with the best weather, I didn't bring my camera and only had my phone. I walked across the white sand, ... read more

Malaysia has some of the most beautiful beaches, particularly on the east coast. I've been itching to go to the beach for over a year now, so when I found out that there's a holiday this week I jumped at the chance. Monsoon season is starting already, so it's my last chance to go this year. Four days of the sea and sand sounds like a great way to relax before the end of the school year. It's only an hour's drive from home, so I made the trip easily. I checked into my guesthouse (or chalet, as they're known here) and made my way to the beach. It was only a five minute walk! I ate some fried rice at a restaurant on the beach (the view was better than the food) and it was ... read more

In the small town of Cherating there's a batik shop and art center on the main street. Since I've never tried to make a batik before, but have always liked looking at them, I decided to give it a try. The woman who runs/owns the shop is just the sweetest thing. She's kind, helpful, and has plenty of patience. Which is a lucky thing for me! I started out by tracing an elephant picture onto white cloth. Of course, I didn't realize at the time that I hadn't centered it. But that's one thing that you need to do, or else it throws off the border when you're painting, and later framing. She tried to assure me it wasn't a big deal, but I assured her that with my OCD it was a huge problem. If ... read more

I stopped at my local fruit stand today. The supermarket nearest to me doesn't have a lot of variety and I really wanted something besides apples and oranges. From a distance I knew I would not be disappointed. A chatty woman who helped me showed me the mangos. In the US, there's only one kind for sale usually, and it's red and green. Since moving to Asia I've discovered there's yellow mangos. Now I know that Malaysia has three types of mangos. Probably more. But she sells three kinds. She showed them to me and told me their names. (Which I didn't write down, of course.) And how they're each a little different. And how I should try one of each to see what I like best. I think that was the most easily I've been ... read more

House hunting when you live abroad is always a bit different than you're used to. In the US, I asked friends for recommendations of leasing companies that they liked, called one, and was shown an apartment or two. Not a lot of leg work required. In Bangkok, a Thai friend and I went door to door in a neighborhood I was interested in, asking to see apartments. More work than in the US, but, still, not too difficult. If I'd tried to do it on my own (ie, without a Thai friend) I most likely would have needed more time and spent more on the apartment. Malaysia is a whole different game. While I'm sure KL might actually have a similar process to Bangkok, outside KL the game has changed. For one, there are no apartments, ... read more

After spending a few days in a nice hotel in Kuantan, we've been herded to a resort an hour and a half away, down in Chini, right on the lake. It's a lovely, wooded location and I hate it. I've been living out of suitcases for a while now and I would have greatly preferred to stay in the nice place with the good location, where I've finally been sleeping, rather than be stuck deep in the woods with no wifi and poor mobile service. The scenic winding road to get it here is a deathtrap waiting to happen. But I also understand why we're here: this location is much closer to our schools than Kuantan—our driving time is under an hour instead of over. We left Kuantan around noon and headed south. Driving was much ... read more

It's been a busy and hectic week. On top of all the training and running around needed, I also managed to not get a full night's sleep. Ever. Waking at 2-3 am became the norm and I somehow managed to stay awake until 10pm the next night, unable to even nap. Worst time adjustment ever. But at least I managed to stay awake all day! Monday we three new mentors were picked up at the resort and whisked across town to company headquarters for training. The first day they went pretty easy on us and even took us out to lunch! That evening they planned a nice night out at a local country club type venue with great food and beers. It was nice to be social and talk about things other than my new job. ... read more

Well, time to hit the road again. And it wouldn't be a trip to Asia for me if I didn't have a little snafu. Or in this case, a big one. Some of you may be wondering if my luggage was lost. Again. While my latest adventure has left me exhausted and swollen for a few days, it has not left me without my things. And for that I am grateful. After traveling down to Phoenix for some quality, sushi and Mexican food filled time with my cousins, we drove to the airport around 3pm on Thursday. I had a flight at 530 to Chicago, and then after a nice little layover, one to HK, and then onward to KL. It wasn't quite the direct route I would have chosen, but upon further inspection, I realized ... read more

I've spent the summer visiting my parents in Arizona again. After not making the trip last year, I was glad I could this year. There haven't been any big adventures or side trips, but it's been a nice trip none the less. I've gotten to spend time with my family, catch up on best sellers, eat my weight in cheese, enjoy a Law and Order marathon or two on cable, and of course, play with clay. My aunt and uncle also visited for my birthday, which was a special treat since I haven't seen them in a few years. But now it's time to head out for my next big adventure. Back to Asia, but not Thailand. I've found a really great job with better benefits and I'm on the move. Malaysia, here I come!... read more

A few weeks ago, my student and her mother gave me chocolate covered cherries as a New Year's gift. Today, they gave me a homemade rum chocolate cake. It was still warm. (The mother bakes and sells them at a local hospital.) They are quickly becoming my favorite family. This week after class, I asked my student's mom how I could get more chocolate rum cake, hoping I could buy one. She said that she'd come in Saturday and bring me and the new teacher each one. She joked, "I'm going to get some regular customers, aren't I?" I gave her a big smile for an answer. Today, Saturday, I completely forgot about it, and we were all the way down the elevator after work when we ran into my student's family. "We just missed the ... read more
