With Chinese New Year fast approaching, my friends in China have long holidays. One of them decided to take a few days of her holiday to stop and visit me! I haven't seen her since we both left the university in China in June 2013, so we were long overdue for a meeting! I picked her up at KLIA on Thursday. Thanks to traffic and an accident, it took me over five hours to get there. But, unlike everyone had predicted (based on their own experiences), I didn't get lost! Unfortunately, the sign for the airport parking was rather unclear (I thought it was parking for the hotel next to the airport), so I illegally parked like everyone else. I think the ticket cop was waiting for me. But we were on our way again and ... read more

After my adventures in mango buying went so well, I returned to the stand for more. Today the mango lady wasn't there so her sister helped me. Her sister doesn't really speak English and I don't speak Malay so we compromised on Chinese. Except that I kept answering her in Thai. One day at a time... Today I arrived at my school a little early, ready to work with 5 teachers over the course of the day. I saw people blowing up balloons, assembling prize bags for students, obviously preparing for a big event. I was then informed that classes were canceled for the whole morning so we could prepare for a big, one hour event. We sat and listened to speeches, music, guest speakers from the local government, and had a ribbon cutting ceremony. All ... read more

It's currently the monsoon season on the eastern coast of the peninsula. While my teachers had warned me about potential flooding, before I set off for my holiday things were a bit rainy, but still perfectly fine. That's changed. Saturday I had to drive home from KL and it should be about a 2.5 hour journey. I'd be home in plenty of time to do some laundry, check out potential flooding in my area, and finally watch the Downton Abbey Xmas special. I'd wisely done a bit of shopping at a supermarket near my hotel, just in case. I'd already been assured by my landlord that my house was fine, my area was fine, just some minor flooding on the road to Kuantan. Home was just a short drive away. If only it went that way. ... read more

The Batu caves have been on my list of places to visit for a while. I think it's the name more than anything. I made a stop here on my road trip before heading for home. It's sad to think my grand adventure around the Malaysian peninsula is coming to an end. (Except, of course, that my adventure wasn't over yet, thanks to the floods.) I found it easily and parked (for free!) and made my way in. It's one of the few temples I've been to that actually enforces the dress code, some come prepared. No knees, no shoulders, and no, a wrap isn't good enough. At least, it wasn't good enough for the lady telling off a few tourists that I happened to pass. I made my way up the stairs. All the stairs. ... read more

Ipoh is a cute little town in Perak... that I didn't really visit. I admit it. I'd come for some nature and didn't feel like dealing with roundabouts and narrow streets for a few days. Right outside Ipoh are caves. Lots of caves. Some are huge, like Gua Tempurung, one of the largest limestone caves in Malaysia. The cave tours have four options: The short, dry tour The long, dry tour The short, wet tour (which is still longer than the long, dry tour) The long, wet tour (yep, the longest of the four) I opted for #2, since I like to take photos and my camera can't swim. One tour guide takes all four groups at once, and then lets everyone know when their portion of the tour is up. You're then ... read more

Long, long ago, in a land far, far away, there was a man from Scotland. He moved to Malaysia. He decided to build his family a house... and never quite finished it. His family then moved back to Scotland and what's left is known as the Kelley Castle. It's not really a castle, but it is a pretty big house. It has all the trappings of a castle, with secret passageways, spiral stairs, detailed moldings, and dramatic views. Not to mention, it's one architectural marvel after another. These days, all one can do is walk around and imagine how grand it would have been had it been finished. In my case, this happened in the rain, so the whole place sort of had a romantic, turn of the century movie set feel to it. One gentleman ... read more

Usually I don't bother to write much about little museums I visit. When a museum is only the size of a room or two, there's not a lot to say. I've visited quite a few Sun Yat Sen museums over the years. Nearly everywhere I went in China I could find one. He's a popular guy! The only problem, though, was that most had signs that either had no English or very poor English. Without the aid of google, I would have never figured out , why he was so popular. (The irony of that is not lost on me.) Until now. The Sun Yat Sen museum in George Town is fantastic. I only had an hour, but was delighted to discover that I could have easily spent more time there. It's not large, of ... read more

George Town is a historic city and UNESCO World Heritage Site. It's easy to wander the streets for hours on end, discovering all sorts of little things along the way. The first trick is to slow down and take your time. The second is to look without your camera in front of your face, while also keeping it ready to take a shot at a moment's notice--you never know what you'll see around the next corner! I spent a full day wandering around the city and found many hidden treasures. If I'd had more time, I could have easily spent more, stopping along the way for coffee and cake at any of the numerous cafes around town. It's full of winding streets, small shops, and old architecture. It felt like I was stepping back in time--a ... read more

Just a quick walk up the road takes you to an area with a different feel to it. Fort Cornwallis sits on the sea and is in a neighborhood of gran old buildings. It's also next to the famous Queen Victoria Jubilee Clock Tower, so it's easy to see both in one stop. Fort Cornwallis was built in the late 1700's by the British. At only 2 MYR to enter, it's a steal. Parts are undergoing restoration, but what's there is good. Lots of artifacts, cannons, and historical places of interest are easy to walk around and see. The fort is filled with many firsts and largests in Malaysia. Sufficed to say, it's one photo opp after another! Not everywhere is paved, though, so be wary of slippery spots as you make your way around!... read more

George Town has an art walk. Not a little one, either, mind you. It's big. Bigger than I had anticipated. And it's also a great way to spend an afternoon. My friend got a map of it at her hostel, but you can also get a map at the tourist office. The art walk is all over the city, featuring both painted works of art and also sculpture. Many are interactive and people pose with them for photos. (Which makes it difficult if you want to take a photo of JUST the art--it confused a lot of other tourists! "You're not running to stand next to it... so you must not want a photo?") It was as much fun to see people pose with the art as it was to see the art. Finding the pictures ... read more
