A good night sleep the night before allowed me to wake up early in the morning. It was freezing cold but the sun was out and bright and the sky clear. The breakfast in the morning was the best breakfast at any hotel we’d been to so far; muffins, croissants and cereal on demand with orange juice. We packed up and left quickly to begin our journey to New York City. We had to drive through Connecticut first. There were many road tolls but it was nice to see no snow or ice on the roads, it was all only on the side of the roads. The temperature had picked up significantly from -8C to 7C by the time we’d arrived in New York City. We only stopped briefly for lunch at Arby’s, which I didn’t ... read more

A short sleep through the night didnt seem to affect my ability to get up on the morning as I woke up earliest, showered and helped myself to an apple and some toast for breakfast. It wasnt a great selection, but it was the best breakfast I'd had since leaving San Jose. I was awake so much earlier than everyone else that I even had time to clean out the car and briefly check my emails before we were ready to begin our day visiting Boston. The first place we visited was Harvard University, the oldest and most famous university in the United States. The drive there showed us how much snow the snow storm had dropped over the east coast with at least a foot of snow covering everything but the roads and people obviously ... read more

I woke up at 10am in the morning on a very hard floor in a not so nice hotel room. It wasn't the most pleasant wake up and we had less than an hour to rush out and pack the car. Everyone was a little stressed but sure enough by 11am we were on the road and on our way to Niagara Falls, just an hour down the road. The weather was better than the previous day and the sun shining bright. It was still crisp cold outside. We stopped at what looked like a tourist hotspot and asked for directions. We realised that the place we had stopped was a water park inside a hotel with lots childish decorations including a strange talking moose. We found out that we were only 5 minutes away. We slept in a car park just outside Toronto, beside McDonalds. It was only -12C outside and there was ice beginning to appear on the inside of the windscreen. The 7 seater car was slightly uncomfortable and it was not a good sleep, it was especially bad being woken up every so often from the car being switched on for heating - the cold did not bother me at all. At 10am, we went to the supermarket just beside us, it was called "Sunny Foodmarket." I bought some sandwhich meat - Halal beef - and some bread, to help ease the cost of food. The idea was to go to the CN Tower, but when we got there it was more than $25 to go up the CN Tower. Ace decided to go up there regardless, ... read more

The day started just 30 miles north of Chicago. The 5 of us got up at around 8am and began to pack the car after our long stay visiting Chicago. Around 10 inches of snow had fallen the previous night and it was -6C outside, so we were forced to dig our car out of snow and defrost it. The morning was beautiful with few clouds and a bright sun. We had planned to leave promptly and by 9.30am were on the road to Michigan. Within the hour we had already crossed the border to Indiana and shortly after we were in Michigan. I was expecting to see something different in terms of landscape from each state, as we had previously on the journey, but from Michigan I saw nothing special or outstanding other than a ... read more

We woke up early to hopefully catch a church service in Chicago. Today was the first day I decided to try out the complimentary breakfast we have with the hotel; it was nothing special, but certainly a treat compared to the last place. We left the hotel listening to cheerful Christmas music and parked in the cheapest car park yet. They had a special weekend rate - which we took full advantage of, accepting it as the first Christmas gift of the day. We walked to the nearest church - St Peters, and it was beautiful inside. It was modern and prosperous. We arrived shortly after noon to find the service had already begun, there was a full choir - who were very talented, and a large congregation. By the time the song had finished everyone ... read more

Today, on Christmas Eve, I woke up at 9.30am in order to prepare to leave for Chicago. Unfortunately, not everyone else got up and ready quickly so it was 11am before we left. We decided to get the train into Chicago, but upon arriving found out it was actually cheaper to pay the $35 to drive and park in the city than pay for the train! We went to Aldi (I was amazed they have Aldi here) and bought sandwhich supplies to try and make lunch a little cheaper. The plan was to go Christmas shopping. As we approached the city centre, it began to snow lightly. The snow didn’t stop the whole day and it is still snowing now (as I write this at 11pm). We parked the car and walked into a department store. ... read more

I slept in. At the first given opportunity I slept to recover from the previous 5 days travelling. We didnt leave the hotel until around 1pm to visit Chicago. We had to drive 30 miles to get into Chicago from the hotel. Driving through Chicago was really nice, the skyscrapers had really nice architecture and was really metropolitan. One thing I did find, is the designs weren't as innovative or new as Seattle - but apparently the first skyscraper was designed in Chicago. We parked the car under the city in underground parking. The first place we went was Millennium Park (which was actually first opened in 2004). We saw the giant bean and walked around the park (which isn't so big). The bean was really impressive and was surrounded by tourists with their cameras. We ... read more

We woke up at 8.30am to try and catch the motel breakfast, which unsurprisingly was not very good. We left the motel to visit St Louis for the day. Our first stop was to visit the famous "Gateway to the West" or "St Louis Archway." On the way there, we passed through the city centre with all the christmas lights - it was like a nice comfortable city. The atmosphere was warming and welcoming. We stopped off in a supermarket and bought some breakfast. I got myself a freshly baked bagel and freshly baked blueberry muffin. I was surprised at how much more friendly the staff were in comparison with most places in California. There was also a bottle of lemonade called "Leninade" - join the socialist movement - I thought it was kinda funny. We ... read more

After going to sleep shortly after 1am, I was woken up at 2.30am to view the full lunar eclipse. All 5 of us and our new friend Jamie from Couch surfers were all standing outside viewing the orange tinted moon with binoculars. Shortly after watching the eclipse, we all went back downstairs and slept. At 7.30am we woke up, showered and changed. Jamie made us all pancakes with pancake syrup, berry sauces and honey. The breakfast was really good, since the previous day we had missed the opportunity for all you can eat pancakes for 99c. We spoke with Jamie and his family for a couple of hours before packing up and leaving. It was a great experience meeting new people and staying at their house, and the people were really hospitable.
