Our journey started in a Holiday Inn, in Rapid City, just 30 miles north east of Mount Rushmore. We woke up at 8.30am and were ready to leave and check out by 10am. It was snowing the night before, so we had to defrost the car. Fortunately we had cleared out the car, so the car was clean which was a nice change. The day started out cloudy, but by the time we were ready to leave, the sky was clear and light blue, with a strong winter sun. My first impressions of Mount Rushmore were surreal. I have been used to seeing it on television, on the internet and in the media. I felt slightly freaked out and thought it was quite creepy, but the mountain was amazing. We visited the gift shot, bought our ... read more

I started the day, after sleeping in the car from Twin Falls in Idaho, and waking up in Jackson, Wyoming. It was 6am and we were outside a McDonalds, where we had stopped for breakfast. I had heard that it was an unpleasant drive due to blizzardy conditions, low visibility, a lot of ice and also because it was dark. We drove from Jackson, a very small town in Wyoming, with snow covered roads and mountains. We decided to drive towards Yellowstone National Park. Within an hour of driving, we reached Grand Teton National Park. We drove through Grand Teton which had around 2-3 feet of snow through it, most of it fresh, and drove through the park. Once we approached Yellowstone, unfortunately we realised it was closed for the Winter, and only visitable via guided ... read more

We were due to leave to the airport at around 6.30am to pick up the rental car and leave San Jose by 8am. We did not end up leaving San Jose until around 10am, 2 hours behind our very tight schedule. We packed the car thoroughly with enough food to last us 2 weeks including a cooler, we each also had a suitcase and bedding. We packed a first aid kit, car gear for all weather and a lot of energy/caffeinated drinks. Within 90 minutes we had already passed Sacramento, the capital of California and were well on our way to Nevada. As we passed Lake Tahoe from the North side, there was heavy snow, and we were required to use snow chains on the tyres of out car. We were delayed, but arrived in Reno ... read more

We left Vancouver at approximately 5pm. Unfortunately on the way back, we were held at Border Control for around 1 hour due to immigration documentation problems. Finally we were able to make it into Seattle to meet Nizar, Joseph, Paul and Helder. We had a meal with them before making our final journey home. The trip was documented with a video - credits to David Renold for making the video.... read more

Vancouver was a very relaxing get away from all the exams and coursework that was hanging behind in California. The hotel room that the 6 of us had crammed into was inexpensive, despite having luxuries such as a Sauna + Jacuzzi. Most nights myself, David and Yann made our own meals whilst playing the day's slideshow photos and listening to music. On the first day, we got ready to go out, and the club there was free entry, and free tequila all night. It wasn't a bad first impression of the place. Although, there were many homeless people around trying to sell you their paintings or try to help you out for some spare change. This often added to the entertainment of the night out. The second day, I woke up early to walk around Downtown ... read more

Spent the day in Seattle. The previous night we had view Seattle from the Space Needle and dined at a seafood restaurant. In the morning, myself and David walked around Seattle. We also entered the West Inn, one of Seattle's largest skyscrapers. There was an executive suite open as housekeeping was cleaning the room. We were able to take some photographs, before walking around town and buying iconic Starbucks coffee. Later that afternoon we visited the Public Market, before leaving to Vancouver.... read more

North America » United States » Oregon » Portland November 11th 2010

On 11th November at 1am, we left San Jose in California and travelled North up the Interstate 5 towards Portland and Seattle. Within 2 hours of driving, we had already been stopped by the traffic police. Not a great start to the journey, however, the rest of the journey was fantastic and scenic. I also managed to arrange my immigration forms to allow me to leave the country to Canada. We drove passed one of California's tallest mountains, Mt Shashta and also crossed by Portland too. Since we were behind schedule, we decided it would be a wise idea to continue to drive on to Seattle. We covered around 800 miles in 15 hours and arrived in Seattle at 3.30pm. ... read more
