We arrived in New Orleans, Louisiana at around 4.45am and decided that it was not worth getting a hotel room for a few hours. We slept in the car until about 9am. Then we walked into the visitor centre, which had very nice toilets, to brush teeth and clean up. The first thing we did in New Orleans was visit a cemetery. Ace noted that New Orleans was famous for their cemeteries, and since we were nearby one we should visit it. The cemetery was far different from anything I'd seen, each person had their own stone hut built which was apparently to help the body decompose faster with the humidity New Orleans experiences. After walking through one of the world's most scenic cemeteries and beginning the day with a depressing start, we walked to a ... read more

The final day in Miami started off a little late. We slept in because nobody had set the alarm. We were due to leave Miami at 8am as we decided to change plans to leave Miami early for New Orleans. It was really sunny for the whole day and it was nearly as hot as the first we arrive in Miami, so it was a shame to be spending it in the car At around 10am we left the hotel and headed off South Beach – the area where we spent all of our time – and drove around downtown Miami. I was still tired from the night before and so slept in the car for most of the driving. Although, I did catch a few sites and skyscrapers but didn't see anything especially more exciting ... read more

I woke up at 7am, a little later than I wanted to, to prepare and get ready for a long day ahead at the Keys in Florida. I headed out to the store to get some sandwiches, orange juice and water - which were surprisingly cheap compared to the places we had been. It wasn't as warm as it was the day before and I felt that just wearing a t-shirt and swimming trunks was maybe a little inappropriate or too little. We left Miami at 8am and drove for 3 and a half hours down to the southern most point of Florida (and mainland USA). The drive was beautiful. After we passed the Everglades national park, where there are is supposedly crocodiles and other wildlife, we came to the tip of Florida and started to ... read more

Today I slept in late. It was a very tiring drive the day before from Washington D.C. and I really needed the sleep. We had planned to go visit Key West the night before, but instead decided to postpone it a day because we were all so knackered. I went to the beach but on my way bought some sunglasses as the sun was causing getting in my eyes. We found a good spot on the beach which wasn't as busy as the day before. I swam in the sea for about an hour or two before the sun disappeared behind the clouds, the water was also slightly colder than the day before but was very comfortable to swim in. I lay on the beach and just relaxed for a while when Ace, Tom and Jenny ... read more

I woke up at 5am as we were driving down to Miami. It was a long drive and most of us in the car were sleeping. I caught the beautiful colours in the sky for the sunrise and the great temperature hike as we drove down the east coast of Florida. The drive down Florida was around 1/3 of the time for the total drive. When we were around two hours away from Miami we got out the car and changed into summer clothes. We were wearing big jackets, jumpers and scarves from the below freezing weather we had experienced the previous two weeks. We grabbed a coffee at Starbucks and then proceeded onto Miami. On the way, we saw a really cheap buffet lunch deal so decided to stop at the casino that it was ... read more

Today I needed a lie in, so slept for much of the morning. It wasn’t until 10am that I woke up and I then spent the following 2 hours lazing about in what was one of the best hotel rooms we’d stayed in so far. It was just 4 miles outside of Washington D.C in Arlington, Virginia. The beds were really comfortable and the shower was good. I spent most of my time updating the travel blogs from previous days where I didn’t have internet and arranged many of my hundreds of photographs. It was a rush to leave the hotel room as none of us were prepared at all for our late check-out deadline of 12noon. We checked out quickly and left at around 12.15. The weather in Washington D.C was better than we could ... read more

We woke up early and amazingly, had checked out and left New York City by 8.30am. The weather was really good with a clear sky but very cold. We crossed a bridge over to Manhattan which was astounding with views of the city from the bridge. We encountered our first driving experience through Manhattan which wasn't pleasant, as the drivers there aren't good at all. We left New York and headed down the highway towards Philadelphia. It was only a 2 hour drive, which turned into 4 hours by the time we included traffic and stops for breakfast. We arrived in Philadelphia around 12.30 and planned to spend the day there. It was very cold, around freezing and the wind made it seem even colder. My first impression of Philadelphia was a good one. The skyscrapers ... read more

I woke up very early in the morning (5.30am) to visit the Statue of Liberty. We left just after 6am and it was still dark outside. The subway was dead because it was a Sunday Morning and the service was really slow. We got off at the Staten Island ferry service stop and headed towards the statue. The subway took around an hour and so it was light outside by the time we got out. There was a heavy low-lying fog which made Battery Park look slightly eerie. We queued up for tickets and fortunately got tickets to visit the monument and museum - a privilege for only the first 500 people to visit for the day. We had tried to visit the statue previously but were not quick enough. We boarded the ferry and left ... read more

I woke up later than normal because I went to bed so late the night before. New Years Day and everyone else was sleeping. I woke up, showered and tried to get my currency card loaded for the first time in two weeks. I wasn’t able to get it done quickly and I was on the phone for over an hour, which really ate into my day after waking up late. I was still waiting after the phone call for people to get ready, so I went into Queens with Tom to Target (a local department store). The food was so cheap compared with Manhattan and even California. I bought coffee and a muffin for $2.50, which was the best value I’ve had since visiting the US. I forgot my metro travel card, so had to ... read more

Another early rise got me up and showered feeling a little tired. I went down for breakfast and ordered an orange juice, to realise breakfast is not complimentary and the tiny glass of orange juice that was gone in a couple of seconds had cost me $3. Not a good start to the day. Once I was ready I watched the weather and news for the next 30 minutes and then waited downstairs outside whilst everyone else got ready to leave. We left around 40 minutes later, and got the subway into Manhattan. The plan for the day was to go to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island and meet Yann and Helder (two International House mates from San Jose) by the World Trade Center. We got to the Statue of Liberty and saw that ... read more
