The day started again with the typical Flores breakfast. Pancakes with maple syrup, fruit juice and bottomless coffee, by the waterfront. This time we visited a different restaurant, called Casa Amelia. I spent breakfast reading about the history of Guatemala, learning that they only recently returned to democracy in 1996, and have had difficulty enforcing rule of law and managing crime rates since. After breakfast we had a few hours before the bus left for Tikal, so we bought snacks, water and sandwiches for the trip, bus tickets for the next day’s travel and packed for the day trip. Just after midday a very friendly minibus driver, or chauffeur as he referred to himself in Spanish called Manuel picked us up from our hostel. It was a bit of an empty mini bus with just us ... read more

We woke up at 6am and I visited the local bakery for a cinnamon pastry and morning coffee for breakfast. It was a very pleasant walk two blocks with the colourful colonial style architecture and empty street. At 7.40am the bus picked us up from the hostel to take us into Guatemala City to transfer to Flores in the North. We spent most of the bus journey talking, planning the rest of the days on the trip and a brief stop for food too. At 8pm we arrived at Flores. We woke early the next morning and decided to spend the day relaxing on the island of Flores. By the waterfront there were many restaurants serving pancake breakfasts with honey, strawberries and unlimited coffee for $3. I enjoyed this while looking over the lake. After breakfast ... read more

The arrival to Guatemala was pleasant despite two days traveling, three flights and only 3 hours of sleep. I’ve always had a feeling of excitement being in Latin America as it feels like the beginning of an adventure. I met Ben at the airport, and we ventured towards our first port of call, Antigua, a small charming city just outside of Guatemala City and much less dangerous. We woke up at 7am, the following day and decided to visit a coffee plantation and ranch just two miles from Antigua. I had heard that Guatemala is well known for coffee and wanted to see how it was made, and to try it from the source. We walked there through Antigua and a small suburban town just outside called 3 Ángeles. The ranch was just outside, Finca Filadelfia. ... read more

South America » Ecuador » Galápagos » Isabela Island December 17th 2014

The boat to Isabela island left early at 6am and was completely full without a space left on the boat. It took two hours on the quick speed boats to arrive at the Island from Santa Cruz. When we arrived at the port, the water was crystal blue clear and there were dozens of sealions resting on the pier not phased by the incoming traffic of tourists passing by onto the Island. A full day with itinerary was planned. I was paired up with two couples, one from Korea and another from Chile. The five of us headed towards a lake where we could see some wild flamingos and other native birds of the island. It was quite impressive, but we weren't able to get up too close because the muddy lagoon was far below. We ... read more

South America » Ecuador » Galápagos » Santa Cruz Island December 16th 2014

I decided to skip breakfast, which in hindsight was a great decision. A day of scuba diving lay ahead at Gordon Rocks, just off Santa Cruz Island and the sea was rougher today causing some of us to feel a little sea sick. We stopped off near the dive site so that the new divers could check their gear and be briefed on hand signals. In the meantime we admired the sea life by the rocks. The blue-footed boobies, frigate birds, sea lions among others. On the boat was a biologist, who passed me his binoculars pointing out all of the animals. It was a really great to hear about all of the animals from an expert and to see them so close. We approached the rocks, where the current felt much more strong and the ... read more

I woke up early at 8am despite a late night the night before staying up until 2am packing my things. I was full of excitement at the prospect of visiting South America for the first time and had a few things to sort before I departed. I left the house at midday and went to the shop to pick up some new hiking boots and a mosquito net for the rainforest as well as a medical kit. I had just enough time to sit down to have breakfast at my favourite bakery near the train station. With three hours until my flight I decided to leave, as I was excited to catch my flight to go travelling. However, upon arrival, the day took a turn for the worse. During the check-in, the flight assistant notified me ... read more

Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Barcelona » Barcelona December 12th 2014

Tonight I decided that I would take a stroll around the neighbourhood by my flat. I am about to embark on a South American adventure, the holidays that I have been building up to for the past few years. A new chapter in my attempt to learn Spanish, and also visiting other areas of the world. It seemed like an apt time to reflect and take in what I was about to do. I arrive in Guayaquil, Ecuador tomorrow evening and I have only just begun to sink in. It is a little nerve-racking, in part because its so far and I don't really know what to expect. I also only just booked hotels for the first week a couple of hours ago, and travelling to a unknown country seems a little risky, and a step ... read more

North America » United States » New Mexico » Santa Fe January 12th 2011

I woke up in Santa Fe, New Mexico in Justin and Mel’s house – the people we met through couchsurfers. It was around 7am and the sun was rising outside, I’d had a decent sleep and spent most of the morning online, updating blogs and checking emails etc. At around 10.30am we left their house, they had kindly let us stay there even whilst they went off to work and asked that we just lock the door behind us. Our plan was to get something to eat, meet up with Jamie from the I-house and then drive to Chaco Canyon, an ancient ruins site. By 12noon we were running late and had only just finished eating breakfast. We met up with Jamie shortly after in New Mexico, bought some memorabilia, took some photos and left Santa ... read more

I woke up in a hotel room, still tired, at 7am and began to get ready to leave. I showered, ate breakfast, which was the best breakfast I’d had all trip with yogurts and bagels available. I walked outside to find the sun out and the sky blue with not a cloud in the sky, yet again. Despite the -6C temperatures, the car was no frosted up. I later discovered this may have been because two of the windows were left open ajar from the night before. Inside the car was almost colder than outside the car. I packed up the car and turned on the heating for a while. I then returned to the hotel room and watched TV until everyone else was ready to leave. It wasn’t until around 9.30am that we eventually left ... read more

North America » United States » Texas » Dallas January 10th 2011

I woke up early again to leave for Dallas in Texas. We packed all our belongs and began the drive to Texas in our new silver Florida plated car. It was meant to take us 8 hours to arrive in Dallas. The road wasn't very exciting although there was a 25 mile long bridge that we crossed through a river and swamp and the temperature began to plummet to around freezing again or the first time since leaving Washington D.C. The trees around looked very white and wintery from frost, and thankfully there was no ice on the road. We didn't stop at all for lunch, only frequent stops at gas stations for toilet breaks and fuel top ups. The highlight was watching American Psycho on a laptop in the car. We finally arrived in Dallas ... read more
