Today we challenge the mountain on horseback. We had breakfast at the alburgue, one of the few to offer cereal as a choice, and packed our bags to be transported to Triacastella. All three packs go today as you are not meant to take them on the horses. We gathered at El Paso, Victor's place, while he fed and prepared our mounts. Mine was a fine looking white mare, placid and well versed in the route. These horses knew their way and could pick a path through the sometimes rocky steep path. Victor walked ( that gives you an idea of our speed) and met a friend half way up who helped him lead the horses back down the mountain at great speed, riding and leading one each. We were momentarily the kings of the mountain ... read more

We rose early and had breakfast at the alburgue. The walk ahead was largely along minor roads with a concrete barrier between us and the traffic. It was pretty quiet and on the left side was forest and the Rio Pereje, a rapid river which accompanied us all the way to Herrerias, so we were well compensated for following the road by the aromatic scent of the moist morning forest. We passed through a number of small villages, Pereje being the first. We called in at the bar for our first coffee of the day and the walls were adorned with stuffed animals and small agricultural implements from yesteryear. The road out of this village took us back to the larger road and again we followed the river through three more villages until we reached Herrerias. ... read more

Today we rose early, skipped breakfast and headed to Ponferrada, in the dark, with headlamps glowing. It was a suburban walk through housing ranging from fairly urban to very upmarket. Ponferrada is known for its gold, silver and coal assets, as well as being the location of a large nuclear power plant. Walking through town was quiet and the only people around were fellow travellers or locals out early with their little dogs, encouraging them to do what they can't do in the appartment. We saw the ancient castle with the remains of a moat and the cathedral but decided to just pass through to get a few kilometres up before it became too hot. We met an Australian couple, Ray and Lynn from Port Macquarie, who were doing the Camino from Pamplona. Lynn was having ... read more

After leaving Rabanal it was a long steady climb to La Cruz De Ferro, the hilltop cross at the highest point of the Camino, 1505 metres above sea level. The relevance of the Cross is that most people carry a stone or personal item to leave and it can represent an unburdening of some aspect of life for them. It is considered a significant part of the Camino. The weather was perfect and we placed our stones and moved on to Manjarin. This is a quirky little haven with a population of 1. He moved there 21 years ago, built a shanty, and stayed. He now sells a little food, runs a small alburgue which only has hot water when he lights the fire, and we think he is a budding Knight Templar, if only it ... read more

Up early and had breakfast at a bar near the cathedral. We walked out in poor light and had our new ponchos on as it was raining. They seem to work well But at the edge of town we found a spot to take off a layer as they tend to keep the heat in. The first 6kms were pretty uneventful and the paths were very good. Some of the path was on the road and every time a vehicle passed we had to turn our backs to it or get a free shower. The road turned to gravel and a trail of walkers braved the wind and rain. The scent of pine forests followed us most of the way and brightened up an otherwise damp day. At Murias de Rechivaldo we had a coffee and ... read more

This morning we woke to rain at 6am. Sue was catching the bus back to Leon and transferring to another going to Astorga. Total cost, 4.6 Euros. Tim and I set off in the light drizzle with a headlamp on. It was dark until about 8.15 but we were on a minor road so the surface was good. We were accompanied by Bev from Boston, a middle aged woman who was doing the Camino for religious reasons. Of all the people we have met, the Americans seem to be the god fearing types who have a spiritual reason for the walk. Nothing wrong with that and no one has tried to impose their views on us. Bev was visiting quite a few sites along the Way and really knew her relevant dates and occasions for the ... read more

Today we rose early, enjoyed the buffet breakfast at Regia Posada, fastened the bagpacks on for the first time in a few days, and wandered down to the bus depot to set Sue on her way on the bus to Marzarife. Tim and I left the Depot at 9.30 am and found the pilgrim trail out of Leon. We spent quite some time walking through suburbia and the industrial fringe of Leon before making a well concealed left turn down a muddy track in order to leave the main road and pass through country villages instead of hiking along the main road. It was overcast and drizzling rain most of the time but we set a pace and stuck to it. We walked through mud, rocky roads and along a few tarred roads so we had ... read more

Well today we tested the Spanish rail system. It's cheaper than at home, more efficient and, at the hour we used it, you have a carriage each (if you so choose). We left Sahagun and arrived in Leon at 8.32 am after a 45 minute trip. It was raining and a number of fellow passengers were also on the Camino. At the station at Leon we bought a map, located our hostal (hotel), and after 15 minutes walking, arrived at the Regia Posada Hostel. It is a lovely renovated old building with well worn polished stairs, beams across the ceilings, and period furnishings in the rooms. Since it was built in the 17th century, the addition of heating, hot and cold running water and a lift are greatly appreciated. We dropped off our packs and headed ... read more

We left at daybreak today hoping to get to Carrion by 1pm. A quick cafe con leche and a shared pastry set us up for the walk and before long we had crossed two freeways and were setting a good pace along a good track next to the main road to Carrion. As we entered the village of Poblacion de Campos we decided to have a break as feet problems were potentially going to slow us up and maybe cause bigger issues down the track. As much as we really wanted to walk every stage, after Carrion we need to have a break and let injuries ( which now include raw blisters, sorry if you're eating) heal and get some better shoes for Sue. The shoes she has were fine at first, were well broken in, ... read more

This day was meant to be an easy walk but seemed to be mentally difficult for some pilgrims. Sue was keen for it to end,as were a few younger walkers with very few pain issues. I think the first 7 kms were testing and set the tone for the day. We left Castrojeriz at about 8am to the sound of doves cooing in the ancient eaves of the church, as it was a short leg to walk, but after a steady couple of kilometres with a few ups and downs, we crossed a long stone levy bank/sort of bridge, we faced a 12 degree, which looks more like 45 degrees when you see it, mountain to climb. It left the rio Odrilla and rose 110 metres over about one kilometre. I like to set a pace, ... read more
