When you return to Santiago...
be sure to look for the pilgrim's shadow on the back side of the cathedral.

They wouldn't have been Quakers - aren't they all about quietude?

Salceda...
I stayed in this lovely albergue...so did the cast and crew of "The Way." Perhaps the owner will share some stories with you.

A Ghost Of The Past

Oh, those life-saving poles!
I so agree with you that two walking sticks, used properly, are the only way to go! I carried a too-heavy pack with books, music, star-charts and lots of absurd toys like that, but with the poles, I made it! What could be better than spending your days walking in beauty? Buen Camino!

Luv ya work
Steve we have been following your progress, enjoying your blog. It is now part of the morning routine, perhaps you should consider some Bacchus Marsh trips to help all with withdrawal. It sounds as though it is busier than your previous walk. I guess that is 'progress'. Your pictures and commentary still paint an enticing adventure picture. Looking forward to catchup. Cheers John & Andrea

Almost there
Not long now - keep those feet dry in rainy Galicia!

Feet are the priority!
Past the worst of it but the challenges are daily. Always vigilant . At the moment every corner reveals a new memory. It's coming together.

Low Clouds But High Spirits.

Ah, generous, green Galicia, natural paths and public albergues
Pretty amazing that the poorest province in Spain was also the most generous--witness the lady with the pancakes and "free" public, church-run albergues. Like you, I saw pilgrims with their Gore-tex, etc, who didn't always think to repay the kindness of strangers, but good for you. Paths on the earth, just like in the Medieval times--aren't they the best! And those albergues--it often seemed as if there was an orifice chorus, but we survived on the amazing Way. Buen Camino!

O'Cebreiro

Bravo--you made it!
What a challenging walk, but so glad you made it! That tiny town of O'Cebreiro was one of my favorites--so out of another world. It was hung with mist when I was there, which made it even more mysterious. Welcome to Galicia--Buen Camino!

Albergues...
I guess I lucked out as all of the ones I stayed in were pretty nice...with shower doors and not too many in a room. Buen Camino!

Loved Villafranca!
Hopefully, when you went to the plaza to meet John, you got to see some of those ancient, Romanesque churches there. I loved that town and lingered several days there! Best wishes on making it up to O'Cebreiro, one of the toughest climbs on the Camino--a horse sounds like a great idea, or at least a service to carry your bag. However, you'll be highly rewarded. O'Cebreiro is a tiny settlement from earlier ages. Buen Camino!

Great Trip
Hi Steve, once again I have been enjoying your travels. I look forward to reading them each morning. I had a bit of an accident last Wednesday, faces and solid timber hall tables don't mix well. I'll tell you all about that when you return. Safe travels, bye for now. Take care.

Knights Templar Castle, Ponferrada

Treats along the Way!
How fabulous that you got to visit the Templar's Castle! Must admit I'm a bit of a nut for them and have visited lots of their castles and sanctuaries. However, it's rather lucky that you didn't find a book in English--I carried far too many, which wasn't so wise. Interesting that there are many Koreans. There were few of them in 2003 when I walked, but there were tons of Brazilians due to a book on the Camino by Paulo Coelho. I love the stones you left at the Cruz de Ferro--may your hopes be realized. Buen Camino!

It's 5.30am and I have snoring above and to the left so the days are definitely the best!

Shady path

A perfect path!
I love sweet, shady paths like this. So sorry you lost Astorga, a town I loved and stayed a month in as a hospitalera in a refugio when the temperature was around 38C. the ancient Roman wall (so impressive to those of us from the colonies), Gaudi's Bishop's Palace, the Gothic cathedral and the Chocolate Museum. Hope all is well. Buen Camino.
