Geo: 37.7055, -122.047Spent much of the morning food shopping and preparing for the afternoon gathering. So the three cousins (Robyn, Diana and Ann), each the daughter of one of the three sisters born to Bill and Gladys McGown, met and swapped family stories. Diana's niece Stephanie also came, and a good time was had by all. Robyn had culled and scanned old family photos and Dwayne displayed these on his TV to much discussion and reminiscing.Golf on Sunday while Rob took Ann sightseeing. Dinner at Dwayne's Sequoyah Country Club.Shopping on Monday and admin catch-up. Geo: 37.6603, -119.851Our driver/guide on the two-hour Valley Floor bus tour was Bill Fontana, a 25 year veteren of the Park who has written books and has a website on the Park. He was full of information, and a little garrulous at times. Got some good pics at the main touristy look outs. We particularly enjoyed watching with binos the many climbers on El Capitan.According to Bill, there is no widespread agreement on the origin of the word "Yosemite", first used by Capt Savage of the Mariposa Battalion in the early 19th C. Bill favours the argument that it is of Chinese origin, sounding like the Chinese words for "harmony".3 1/2 hour drive from Yosemite to Castro Valley, that turned into 4 hours with an accident closing one lane of the freeway. Geo: 37.6486, -118.971In the morning we went to see the Devil's Post Pile near Mammoth Lakes. These unusually shaped rock fingers resulted from cooling lava, millions of years ago. We went over a pass at 9,200 ft and down to the post pile at an elevation of over 8,000 ft. It was 36 deg F when we got there at 9:30am, but a brisk walk at that elevation soon got the heart pumping. Then drove into Yosemite Park through the Tioga Pass eastern entrance. We had a very pretty 90min drive to the village area and booked a tour for tomorrow, had a look around and a drink at The Ahwahnee. It was another poor winter for snowfall and even the perennial Bridalveil Falls had almost no flow.We stayed outside the Park near the small town of ... read more

Geo: 36.3302, -116.574Spent more time exploring the Vegas Strip this morning then departed around lunch time. I am a little sorry we did not allow more time in Vegas. Although we explored several casinos and shopping malls, we barely scratched the surface of even the landmark venues. There's a Wyndham Resort near the Strip (where we have a timeshare equivalent) and we'll return for a week or two in the future. Then on the road. Desolate drive through Death Valley where the lowest point along the highway is 190 ft below sea level. 101deg at the Visitor Centre but dry, with a light, hot breeze. Arrived after dark in Mammoth Lakes, one of the biggest ski fields in USA. We're overnighting here in a two bedroom, two bath Westin suite. We were told bears are often seen ... read more

Geo: 35.9786, -114.834Tue 14th we drove about an hour to Hoover Dam, so renamed from Boulder Dam in 1947. (President Herbert Hoover, not FBI's Edgar Hoover.) The dam was built in four years from 1931 to 1935, mainly for flood control and water storage. Electricity generation was an afterthought, but a good one. Electricity revenue has paid for the dam construction ($165M) and still pays for all its operating costs. This piece of infrastructure funding works so well that the Federal Government has never done it again (or so our guide said, wryly). We did the grand tour of the power plant and the dam itself, about an hour or so. Very interesting going inside the dam tunnels and getting an appreciation of how big it was. 660 feet thick at the base (!) and 726 feet ... read more

Geo: 36.0846, -115.172Left Hermosa Beach about 9am and stopped to shop at SteinMart at Rancho Cucamonga, about 45 min away. Good golf gear, especially as it was non-iron. Had a quick drive through the Victoria Gardens shopping precinct, one of Erin's properties. Then at Erin's earlier suggestion we stopped at Bass and Pro, a huge outdoors shop with an amazing fit out.We stopped for gas and food at the Nevada border and were once again reminded that getting petrol in the US is not easy for a foreigner. You can only use a credit card at the pump, or go inside and prepay some cash, estimating what you'll need. It turned out that as a security measure you have to also enter your billing zipcode with your credit card so that option was closed to us.We ... read more

Geo: 34.0674, -118.401After a visit to the art markets at Brentwood, we drove through Beverly Hills and Bel Air and gawked at the mansions. Visibility was limited by the haze which apparently usually lasts until early afternoon, before burning off. Pete and Erin also said it doesn't rain in LA. They can only remember light showers on about three occasions in the ten months they've been here. Then a trip to Rodeo Dr which was closed off for a Ferrari festival - 60 years of Ferrari in the USA. They had dozens of Ferraris on display, from the earliest models, to one-off custom made jobs, to the famous super cars. Most had a little blurb next to them explaining the car and its significance. Geo: 33.989, -118.462After we switched the car this morning, Robyn went window shopping while I read up on the car controls. The young ones were out late last night but were up and ready for brunch when we got back to the house at 11am. We had a fine meal at Abigail's at Hermosa Beach and we met Morgan and Maggie, more friends. Then Erin and Pete took Lizzie to the airport while Rob and I hired a couple of "cruiser" push bikes (Rob had gears, none for me) ready for our planned epic ride to Venice Beach along the bike path.It was 20km each way and although there were no hills, the distance and the frequent headwind did cause our muscles to protest. We finished back at Hermosa Beach at 6pm and returned the bikes ... read more

Geo: 33.8762, -118.405Smooth run through LAX immigration and customs and Erin picked us up at 7:20am.An orientation drive around the local area then we dropped Erin at work and took her car to look for SIM cards and a hire car. More than the usual drama in getting online, involving two trips to T-Mobile and one trip to the Apple Store. All ended well, eventually. Not so easy getting a hire car and we ended up booking a Hyundai Santa Fe SUV from Alamo LAX for the three weeks. At Alamo we got sweet-talked into upscaling to a Chevy Tahoe, which turned out to be a monster of a car/truck. After considering it overnight, we went back and switched to a Cadillac SUV. Smaller and better optioned and we're well satisfied. This is the Columbus Day long weekend ... read more
