Geo: 39.9203, 116.432After a brief evening thunderstorm and a windy night, we awoke to beautiful clear skies. A relaxed 10 o'clock start today, commencing with a visit to the Temple of Heaven. After that we had a rickshaw ride around the Hutong old town which included an interesting visit to a local family for green tea and a conversation about their family and it's history. We then had a two-hour wait at the airport for our flight to Xi'an (pronounced See ahn) and found a Chinese fast food restaurant that served 500ml bottles of beer. Michael won the inaugural Least Diligent Tourist award for 1) buying warm beer when cold beer was available, then 2) buying cold light beer when cold full strength beer was available. He topped this off by losing his boarding pass and had ... read more

Geo: 39.9204, 116.432Today we hit the road early for the "Long March", as our very professional guide Jennifer (not her birth name, she sweetly states) dubbed the day.We left at 7:30am in a mini-bus and picked up two American women from another hotel who are to be our tour mates for the trip. So we are 10, plus guide and driver. Rhona's luggage arrived this afternoon, whew!On my second trip to mainland China I'm batting two for two in arriving on a long weekend! Labour Day holiday is looming on 1 May and the traffic and crowds are building. So today we did a lot of tour walking (8km by Robyn's exercise band) and visited Tienanmen Square (carefully pronounced in three distinct syllables), Forbidden City, Summer Palace gardens and the Olympic precinct. The Clarks and Oslunds ... read more

Geo: 23.12, 113.25China Southern Airlines to Beijing via a three hour connection in Guangzhou (Canton).737-200 economy class was pretty comfortable. 188 movies on demand and adequate leg room. Limited food (no snacks) and a dry argument until we prevailed on the attendant to bring us many wines - a French White and Chilean Red, both very drinkable.Rhona's luggage did not arrive in Beijing with us, bummer! Hopefully they'll discover it soon and deliver to our hotel.... read more

Geo: 39.4702, -0.376804Walked to the Palau de la Musica for a 10am tour. Designed by Lluis Domenech i Montaner, Antoni Gaudi's university teacher and subsequent intense rival. In the day (turn of the 20th©), Montaner was The Man and Gaudi was the crazy upstart. Now, of the seven UNESCO heritage sites in Barcelona, two are Montaner's and five are Gaudi's.Drove back to Madrid via Valencia. Was pleasantly reassured to see many orange groves near the city. Cracked €30 for a single road toll payment, but the road systems are terrific.... read more

Geo: 41.3769, 2.17492Did a five hour, Barcelona Highlights Tour that was great. Then caught a public bus to Park Guell, that is full of Gaudi's zany architecture. Returned to hang around the city for the first lighting of the street Christmas lights, then strolled back to the hotel.Sagrada Familia, Gaudi's crazy, unfinished church was the focus of the tour, and it was breath taking (and wierd)! Started in 1882, it was always intended to be built using private donations. Nowadays this comes mostly from the nearly 3.5 million visitors annually, who each pay €14. Construction is now well more than 50% complete and the aim is to finish by 2026, for the centenary of Gaudi's death. It would be worth returning to see it finished - it's planned to demolish a city block to accommodate the ... read more
