Geo: -25.3917, 31.9589Back into Kruger for our second full day safari. Just us and Kobus this time. At 7:00am the low sun illuminated something that caught Robyn's eye, and it turned out to be a fresh impala kill dragged up into a tree. Kobus said this was a leopard kill and the leopard would be back. Shortly after a large male climbed the tree and sat beside the kill, not eating and apparently not hungry. After a while it came down again and wandered off into the bush. Bingo, we completed our Big Five sightings. Then we encountered two rhino ambling down the sealed road toward us. A massive herd of distant buffalo that I said would number in the hundreds, but Kobus said was probably over a thousand! A lazy cheetah that eventually stood up to ... read more

Geo: -25.3406, 31.7709Another superb dinner last night. Francois is the representative of the family that owns the lodge and he is very warm and hospitable. His mum Joyce baked a lovely chocolate cake for Rob's birthday and we all toasted and sang Happy Birthday (including in Africaans). Gerard, the 74 year-old patriarch is very involved in developing a new lodge a few hours away in Mozambique. He loves to talk about the country and the people, in a paternalistic and caring way. Joyce made sure that her son Etienne sang for us at dinner. He is a professional opera singer and also a very good chef.Andy and Ela are staying only four days and they are off again today for another full day safari into Kruger. We are going to an elephant encounter at Kwa Madwala ... read more

Geo: -25.3636, 31.8949A 5:30 start this morning. After picking up another Ozzie named Ken, Andy, Ela and we headed into Kruger Park which is about half an hour away. Kobus, our driver/guide folded up the canvas sides of our safari vehicle after we entered the park at Crocodile Bridge and told us there was a sighting of lions hunting just inside.Sure enough, 500m into the park five lions were hunting three wildebeest and they continued across the road, in and around ten or so tourist vehicles. A lioness skirted our vehicle and after a brief eye contact with us, she got on purposefully with her role in the hunt, flanking the small wildebeest herd. The herbivores scarpered before the trap was sprung and the lions settled back into the bush and waited for more game to ... read more

Geo: -25.3406, 31.7709We arrived mid-afternoon. After a quick snack we headed off with Andy and Ela (from Salzburg) for an afternoon drive along the Crocodile River. Kruger Park lies on the other side of the river. Our guide said that the current cold snap would reduce the chance of seeing animals - when it's cold they don't necessarily need to water every day. We were pleased to see a sleeping hippo, then a bloat of five in the river. We also saw a family of five elephant, and a distant view of a buffalo. So, a pretty good first go. Tomorrow after a 5:30am start we spend the day in Kruger Park and hope to see lots of animals. Our room is pretty but poorly lit, especially the bathroom. The lodge sleeps 12 people in five rooms ... read more

Geo: -26.1355, 28.2315Unremarkable airport with plenty of non-smiling staff. Named after a deceased anti-apartheid politician. Luckily the plane was not full and we each got to spread out over three seats for the 10 hour flight. The ear phones were so small that wearing them while sleeping with our head on the side was no problem. We have a four-hour wait for our Nelspruit flight so have had a bit of a wander around. Great variety, good and cheap food in the food hall. If this is like other airports where there is a significant premium on the cost of food, then SA eating will be very cheap. Wonder what their other prices are like?A beautiful, clear and sunny day but it was 1deg when we landed and it hasn't warmed up much yet! The waiting lounge ... read more

Geo: 1.33099, 103.84Yesterday did some shopping and had lunch at the Takashimaya department store Food Fest market. Very good sweet korean pancakes, crackers, dumplings, etc. Much champagne drinking in the afternoon followed by a restorative nap. In the evening we taxied to Lau Pa Sat for a meal on the satay street and finished off with a few drinks at the Jigger and Pony Bar.Today we browsed antiques and fine arts at the Dempsey Hilll precinct. After a fine lunch at Paradise Dynasty in the Ion shopping centre, we had a reflexology massage, which included a short nap. Then home to iced coffees and salted caramel ice cream, rugby and more chatting. Julie showed me how to download movies using BitTorrent. Home cooked pasta dinner and later off to the airport for our 2:10am departure for ... read more

Geo: 1.33047, 103.84Singapore Airlines brought us in comfortably yesterday afternoon. Bought some champagne at the airport and got some cash out of the ATM. Just love this 28 degrees MasterCard, with its currency conversions at the official exchange rate and no fees on purchases. And even with the new 3% fee for cash withdrawals it's still miles better than changing cash at a bank or currency exchange.Had a good chat with Julie and Roger, got reacquainted with their friendly 20 year-old Burmese cat Sam and hissed at by the younger Lola. Nice tea and snacks on the deck and then out to Club Street in Chinatown for dinner. Had a great meal at L'Angelus french restaurant, a long time favourite of the Hills. The street was closed off for the evening and there were plenty of ... read more

Geo: 31.2382, 121.469We're on our own today to get ourselves on the 2:45pm plane to Brisbane via Guangzhou.Dwayne and Joellen leave earlier, so we say goodbye to them around 9am. The Mag-Lev train services Pudong Airport. But we leave from Hongqaio Airport so we'll do a tourist round trip on the train in the morning, then taxi later to the airport.Later. Easy 4 yuan subway ride to the Mag-Lev station and return. The Mag-Lev return fare was 80 yuan, and well worth it. The subway to our airport seems easy too, but with luggage the minor cost of a taxi looks warranted.... read more
