So its the first day we´ve had off since we´ve been here...and let me tell you it was quite productive...i woke up around noon, ate breakfast and sat out at our friends pool all day long. The city really is quite beautiful, and the weather is beyond perfect. I don´t think its ever gotten over 80 degreess. The sunsets are gorgous too, especially when you watch them from El Centro, which is the downtown like area of our city. The sunsets are usually a brilliant shade of pink and red...actually quite similar to that of the color of my shoulders due to being so sunburned. Last night we all visited a club called El Mambo, Ive never seen anything like it. It was three stories high and on stage was a MExican band singing salsa music ... read more

If you want proof that you're in Mexico, look no further than your feet. Everyday after miles of walking up and down the mountainous streets I come home with feet covered in black soot. Everyday my roommate and I leave tracks all throughout the house, and today especially, because all we did was walk. After a pointless 8 am trip to campus to register for classes I neither want nor need for school, we decided to take a cab ride into the city for lunch. We ate at a place called Los Arcos and I got these huge tortas de pollo, which were flat fried tortillas covered with shreded chicken lettuce tomatoes and cheese. They were beyond wonderful. From there we walked around the central plaza with one of the guys who´d been in the city ... read more

Hola...so I made it to Mexico...its that first time ive been able to get on the internet for more than 10 minutes. The campus here is beautiful. Made entirley out of glass and centered around a huge ecological garden. Mi familia is really nice too. Theres a mom and two teenage girls...understanding the spanish is still really tricky, but im slowly getting the hang of it... The food is a whole different story. My first meal in Mexico was incredebly authentic....a turkey sandwhich from subway....which didn{t sit very well after a 2 and a half hour busride to the town i live in...last night my choice of cuisine was even more odd...sushi and mexican beer...and let me tell you, walking through crowded streets after a meal like that was an adventure in and of itself. Anyways ... read more

So this whole adventure starts TOMORROW! I can't believe I'll actually be in Mexico in less than 24 hours. I figure I might not be able to blog in the first few days while I'm adjusting to my new home, family and culture, so I'm going to include my basic itinereary now, so everyone will have at least a vauge idea of what I'm up to. May 27, 2008- My plane leaves from CHicago O-Hare at 10:00 tomorrow morning. This means I'll have to drag myself out of bed somewhere around 6 and catch a hotel airport shuttle around 6:30 or 7. I've never actually been to O'Hare so just finding my gate, on top of all that immigration paperwork, should be fairly entertaining. My plane is scheduled to arrive around 2:10 pm in Mexico City ... read more

So last time I went to Mexico was for Spring Break my senior year in high school. The trip was barely over a week long, and of course I checked 2 bags full of clothes as well as crammed another 4 or 5 outfits into my two carry ons. That said, I'm not necessarily a light packer. The way back to the airport on our way home from Puerto Vallarta (keep in mind there was only 3 of us) we had to pay for 2 taxis, one for us and one for all our luggage. While I did wear every single outfit (almost...) that I packed, I also learned a lesson after ending our Spring Break trip with an $80 cab fare that none of us could afford. Pack light. Not that I really have a ... read more

The reality is slowly setting in now. I leave for Cuernevaca, Mexico in 9 days. In 9 days my entire life is going to change. In 9 days nothing is going to be familiar anymore. It's coming at the perfect time though.I'm at a place in my life where reflection and time to think is crucial. Going to Mexico is the perfect chance for me to really think about my life and where I want to go with it. It's my first chance to really be independent, my first time really travelling alone. But with the departure date being so close, there's kind of a bittersweet feeling in my stomach. I'm excited, don't get me wrong. I've never worked so hard for something in my entire life, and the oppurtunity is one of those once in ... read more

I haven't left yet...i haven't even really found out when I'm going yet, but I do know this, this summer will be far different from any other. A few weeks ago I applied to a study abroad program in Cuernevaca or Monterrey, Mexico. I love Spanish, I love Latin America, it was an oppurtunity I couldn't pass up. I'll get to improve my Spanish every day for 6 weeks, attending classes, going on excursions, just living my day to day life in a small city of Mexico. I'll live with a host family and a variety of other students, which is probably the scarriest part by far, but all in all I'm already so excited!!! I wanted to start this travel journal so that I could document everything about my trip. Partly so my friends and ... read more
