Searching for Greek Gods is exhausting. I mean, not that I'm complaining, afterall I'm in Athens! It's a history and travel lovers dream, an intellectuals paradise, and on top of all that its crawling with boys on motorbikes...you just can't go wrong in this city. But it doesn't mean I don't get exhausted, and the day after island hopping I just didn't feel like doing much of anything. And so I did precisely that, since this technically is my vacation, I took liberty to lounge around in sweatpants watching really bad Greek TV, reconnecting with friends via facebook, indulging in some Greek wine and doing a whole lot of absolutely nothing. But my day of non-European leisure was just that one day, because everyone knows you can't find a Greek God sitting around at home all ... read more

Okay, so I've been here a week now, and my number of plausible Greek suitors is at 3, maybe (I think the Starbucks guy was actually Italian...I wonder if Roman Gods living in Greece count?). This is definetley not the outcome I expected coming to Greece. The ancient art, statues and religion all led me to believe finding a Greek God would be as easy as finding a Walgreens in Saint Louis. I figured there'd be one on every corner, at least, maybe two. Unfortunatley, as I said, my task of collecting a mass of Greek men to take home to my friends has been pretty unsuccesfull during my stay in Athens, so it was time to expand my horizons. If Athens didn't have the Greek Gods I was looking for, most certainly some of the ... read more

I remember the first time I ever saw the acropolis. It was second grade social studies class and the teacher had one of those old fashioned slide projectors. We were learning about Geography or something, and one of the slides was a bunch of falling apart white stone columns, which apparently represented the country of Greece. I didn't get it then, but believe me, I certainly get it now. I may never meet a Greek God in Athens, but it doesn't matter anymore, seeing the Parthenon live in person was a sensation way better than falling for some greasy Greek God, of this I'm sure. My third day in Athens, New Years Eve of all days, is one I will never, ever forget. We got off to a slow start, waking up a few hours behind ... read more

Greek Gods should not be so hard to find, I mean afterall I'm in Athens, the ancient cultural center of the Roman Empire and the very place where ancient Greek religion, and the whole mythology surrounding Greek Gods was invented. I'm not being picky either, at least not really, the only quota I have for my own personal Greek God (which I will just go ahead and assume also applies to my friends at home currently awaiting Greek Gods) is tall, nice physique, good hair, good teeth, and well good hygiene is a plus (although it is Europe so I can't exactly expect it). Anyways. Day 2 in Greece and the search continues. Today, I'd branch out and extend my search to Delphi. ln Greek mythology, Delphi was the site of the Delphic oracle, the most ... read more

So when I first told my friends of my family vacation travel plans to Greece, the most common thing they asked for? A Greek God. Yes, I know that according to Greek Mythology all the Gods live on Mount Olympus and have now been abandoned for more morally concious and practical religions like Orthodox Christianity, however, this doesn't stop me from at least trying to find them what they're looking for. After all, you've all seen the Disney movie Hercules...Who isn't looking for a man with those bicepts? I must admit though, the task of finding 10 brooding, muscular, statuesque Greek men is not nearly as easy as it sounds. Anyways we'll revisit my Greek God search later, for now we'll get to the City of Athens. I'll be as honest as I can here, Athens ... read more

If I say I fell in love with Istanbul yesterday, I think now would be a good time to start sending out the Wedding invitations. Things between us are starting to get pretty serious. Not only does Istanbul have a charming, timeless beauty like so many ancient European cities, but it's architecture, culture and history make it stand out head over heels above ther rest. Our second and final day in Istanbul got off to an interesting start. Still jetlagged, we woke up late for a continental terrace level breakfast. While I don't have much good to say about the breakfast of mini pastries and sour orange juice, the hotel made up for it with its fabulous rooftop view. Observing the city from above gave me one more reason to fall madly in love. Towering turets, ... read more

Let me start by saying Europe never ceases to amaze me. It's been 10 years since I last visited Europe, but the wonderment that paralyzed me then still holds me hostage today as I stare out my hotel window at the lighted towering blue turets on the blue Mosque. Istanbul, Turkey..while not considered classically Europe (many classify it as a part of Asia or even Middle Eastern)...has me absolutley lovestruck, although I must admit it took a while to grow on me As with every cross continental trip, this one started with plenty of monotonous airports and plane flights. The journey started in a very cold, very snowy Saint Louis, Missouri. Icy roads, long lines and delayed flights made for a rough start. However, even amongst the long wait times, there managed to be a lot ... read more

The countdown has officially begun. Yes, technically with our departure date being tomorrow the countdown should have begun weeks ago, but give me a break, I've been busy. It's been a few years since my last out of the country trip and I forgot how stressful the planning can be. Not only am I forced to clock twice the normal hours at work for an ill fated attempt to somewhat maintain my standard of living when I return, but I've also had to deal with the pre-travel preperations like finding and copying documents, exchanging money, double checking itineraries and packing (I'll spare you the details of this last struggle, but I should have you know my heart aches for all the boots, jackets and sweaters left behind) So with that being said, I've managed to ... read more

So as my time in Mexico comes to a close, I realize how much of an adjustment going home is really going to be. I'm sure it'll be just as...if not more difficult than those I had to make when I first got down here. At some point, although its incredebly unclear exactly when, this city really did become like a second home to me. While the first few weeks were something of an adventure, exploring new streets, new foods, meeting new friends, I can honestly say (partly with pleasure and partly with sadness) that the everyday adventure of Cuernevaca has nearly dissapeared. I've mastered the public transportation, and the language struggles that once plagued me, now seem almost silly. These people who I barely knew as friends a month ago, have become nothing short of ... read more

I sincerely wish that I could sit here and write a glowing review of Taxco. The ancient silver mining city we visited this weekend is well known throughout the country for its bottom dollar price on high quality silver, glowing artisans markets, and beautiful mountain-city architecture. Unfortunatley I didn't really get much of an oppurtunity to enjoy this beautiful city, as I spent most of the day nursing a nasty stomach virus. It hit about 20 minutes before we were set to get off the bus, at that point I figured it was just motion sickness from spending too much time riding a bus on the bumpy cobblestone streets, but i was soon to be mistaken. I instead ended up spending most of the day in Taxco looking for public or semi public restrooms while every ... read more
