South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires April 3rd 2007

We decided to go back to La Boca to see if it had changed much in the few months we had been away. It hadn't really, but it seemed much busier even midweek. The main reason for going though was to visit the Boca Juniors football museum. It was excellent, even Trish enjoyed it!! Her favourite bit was the bank of video displays showing world events and Argentine news for the years in which Boca won the league championship. It was a novel way of doing it and made it very interesting even for those with less of a passion for "the beautiful game". Good as it was though, it hasn't made me a Boca fan. I'm still delighted when they lose!!!! ... read more

South America » Argentina » Salta February 27th 2007

The journey from San Pedro to Salta was amazing. For a couple of hours the bus slowly crept up to an altitude of 4500m AMSL. We didn't really notice the lack of oxygen as the scenery was far too much of a distraction. On the way we passed some salt flats which we will explore more closely later this year, and descended an incredible road which consisted of what must have been 100 or so switchbacks or hairpin bends. So, what did we do in Salta? Not much really! We stayed in a lovely hotel where a suite cost more or less the same as a private room in hostels in Chile!! On our first night we got VERY wet. Incredibly, last time we were in the city (18 months ago), we got equally wet going ... read more

Did I mention in the previous entry just how stunning the scenery is here?! We took a whole day tour to explore the “Lagunas Altiplanicas” including several small villages and the enormous salt lake. Okay, so it’s not the Salar de Uyuni, but it was very interesting to see and the flamingos were cute. The salt formation is very different to what we expected. Uyuni is smooth and gleaming white whilst the Salar Atacama is rough and dirty looking as various minerals erupt from the rapidly evaporating surface. Up in the hills (up to 4,300m amsl) we were constantly in awe of the ever beautiful scenery. To walk by a lake flanked by 2 volcanoes is quite an experience and definitely a highlight of our entire time in South America. The two villages we visited differed ... read more

San Pedro de Atacama is up at 2,300m amsl but we felt the arid air more than the lack of oxygen. It is one of the driest places on Earth with more than enough daily sunshine. It is also surrounded by a dozen or so volcanoes, one of which smokes every morning. We loved it. Our first task was to book our bus to Salta. Unfortunately the next one (3 days away) was full so we had to spend 5 nights. We wondered how we would fill all those days but in reality it was no problem at all. On our first evening we took a trip to the “Valle de la Luna” (Moon Valley). The bus left without us as we had been told the wrong time by the tour agency. I shouted, ranted and ... read more

South America » Chile » Coquimbo Region » Pisco Elqui February 24th 2007

The small town of Pisco Elqui used to be called La Union until they decided to change the name to promote its local product - Pisco! We had a wonderfully relaxing few days in a small cabaña and made good use of the swimming pool too. So, after the disappointment of the beach, we finally got to do some serious work on our tans. The only problem we had was when we ran out of our Nivea sun cream and had to resort to a national brand. It had a carrot extract in it which gave it (and us) a lovely orange tint, not to mention an odd smell!! Also, the Factor 12 part of it was questionable as we both caught more sun than we bargained for! The night sky was incredibly clear as we ... read more

South America » Chile » Coquimbo Region » Vicuna February 16th 2007

We headed up the Elqui Valley and away from the coast. As we did so the morning cloud dissipated and it soon became a glorious day. Before long we were settled in our hotel and admiring the pool! Sunbathing at last!! Vicuña is a terrific little town to stay in for a few days, especially with access to a hotel pool. The cost was the same as in an ordinary hostel on the coast! It is a very small town though and the main attractions are outside the town itself. We came here for 2 reasons. Firstly (especially for Russ) was the opportunity to visit the Mamalluca Observatory. You can do this trip from La Serena but, not only does it cost twice as much, but it also means getting to bed at about 4am. We ... read more

South America » Chile » Coquimbo Region February 13th 2007

We only spent half a day in Coquimbo but we left wishing we had stayed there instead of La Serena. It had a good South American vibe to it and the atmosphere around the port was fantastic. We ate fish for lunch in a cheap restaurant where the locals gather every weekend for family feasts. Nearby we were able to see the multitude of pelicans gliding gracefully inches above the water and resting on dormant fishing boats. In town they built a huge cross on a hill to commemorate the Millennium. You can even go up in a lift inside - we didn’t! Sticking with religion, we were amazed to see an Islamic style tower similar to what we have seen in Morocco. It is in fact a cultural centre named after King Mohammed VI of ... read more

South America » Chile » Coquimbo Region » La Serena February 13th 2007

Every time we had seen La Serena on the TV it was sunny. Guess what, it’s cloudy in the mornings! We didn’t really take to La Serena and much preferred the nearby town of Coquimbo (see the next entry). The Japanese Gardens were a highlight though and we had a nice wander through. One evening we went down to the beach near El Faro lighthouse. It wasn’t as developed as expected but the craft market was very good. We got to taste some delicious chocolate too which is always a bonus!! Davis Cup tennis has also been in town. Unfortunately Chile lost to defending champions Russia but the atmosphere in the bus station was electric watching the closing rubber. I never thought this competition could capture the public’s imagination like this. We head off inland next ... read more

South America » Chile » Valparaíso Region » Viña del Mar February 13th 2007

Viña is one of Chile’s premier resorts, and we hit it at peak time! Quite why we don’t know because the weather wasn’t as fabulous as expected and the sun rarely came out before 2pm. Thinking we had come across some anomalous weather I asked around only to find that it’s always like this in February! Despite the disappointment with the weather we loved Viña. It’s hard to say exactly why but the general atmosphere was much nicer than Valpo. It is also very clean in comparison. I wanted to go to the Casino but our money was perfectly safe - it costs US$5 to enter and gentlemen require a jacket and tie (what about ungentlemanly backpackers?!). The beaches are nice but the enormous rollers crashing onto the shore from the Pacific Ocean certainly put me ... read more
