South America » Bolivia » Chuquisaca Department » Sucre December 23rd 2007

The second half of our stay in Sucre was much better. The rain stopped and the sun came out. We were even able to wear shorts and sandals occasionally! Our day out to Jurassic Park was interesting. The hostal owner told us to take "Micro A" to the end of the line which was the entry gates to the park. That would have been the case but our driver went home for lunch, or at least that's how it seemed, and we were left with a 20 minute walk past the smell cement works. Then we had to climb a muddy slope to the gates as the road up isn't quite built yet, in fact they are still excavating it!! Once inside we were treated to half an hour of the BBC's Dinosaur documentary (royalties presumably ... read more

Our first few days in Sucre were similar to Potosi - it rained, rained, then rained a little bit more! Still, it is almost 2000m lower and so it is also a bit warmer. That makes a BIG difference!! A major problem with the rain is the effect on our future plans. We had hoped to spend a few days here before flying on to Santa Cruz. The rain was so bad for two days that the flights were cancelled, leading to a backlog, and the roads are a bit of a mess after the downpours that even bus tickets are hard to come by. Therefore we have to stay here for a whole week before flying onwards. It’s not so bad though as the Hostal Pachamama is cheap and comfortable. (Thanks Hans, Ingrid, Lykke and ... read more

After 2 years in Argentina we said our final goodbyes and left for new adventures! The bus from Salta to La Quiaca was uneventful and the border crossing into Bolivia was surprisingly swift and efficient. The Bolivian official was even friendly and chatty, which makes a bizarre change! That’s not quite going to be the case for any American citizens from now on though. Bolivia have introduced restrictions and, according to both the information poster and the border official, Americans will now need to buy a visa (US$100), produce a Yellow Fever vaccination certificate, have a major credit card, and also have a hotel reservation. Good luck guys!!! We changed our pesos for bolivianos, bought some Oreos (!) and walked up to the bus station in Villazon. With just under an hour until our departure to ... read more

South America » Argentina » Salta December 13th 2007

This is our last entry from Salta. We can't believe it's time to move on already. The last week has been spent saying fond farewells to friends, colleagues and students. We were invited by Mercedes, our Spainsh teacher, to go for lunch in the rather posh Club 20 Febrero where it seemed the great and good of Salta go for their Sunday lunch. It was beautiful in there and well worth the visit if you get the chance. We also attended two parties on the same night to say goodbye to our students. At BET it was a very sad occasion to say goodbye to so many friends, but by the time we got up to St James nearly all the students had gone! Still, we got to say farewell to our fellow English teachers. So, ... read more

When we arrived in Salta one of our concerns was that it could be a bit of a cultural desert! After Buenos Aires with is huge choice of theatres and cinemas, it was obviously going to be a bit different, but we haven’t been disappointed. Indeed, before we even moved into the house we had made our first visit to the theatre. The Teatro Huerto lacks the atmosphere of, say, the Colon in BA, but it is a nice little provincial theatre. We went there to see Angel Mahler’s musical Dracula which we had just missed in BA. It was a great show but, in true Salta style, it began very late and finished at a ridiculous time, something like 1.30am! In contrast, we were very lucky to see Argentina’s ballet star Julio Bocca on his ... read more

South America » Argentina » Tucumán » Amaicha del Valle December 6th 2007

As our plans to visit the ruins of Quilmes had been scuppered, we decided to visit Amaicha del Valle. Friends had told us it was worth a stop, if only to visit the Museo Pachamama, so we decided to stay a night and see what the place was like. Getting from Cafayate to Amaicha isn’t easy. There is only one bus company (Aconquija) and their departure times of 2am (absolutely no way!), 6am (not a chance!) and 6.30pm (we didn’t want to stay all day in Cafayate) were not exactly convenient for us. The hostel managed to barter a taxi down to 60 pesos so we thought it made sense to travel in relative comfort and at a time to suit ourselves. As we left down Ruta 40 it soon became apparent why travel can be ... read more

South America » Argentina » Salta » Cafayate December 4th 2007

School’s out for the summer! To celebrate the end of the teaching year we decided to go on a trip up to Cafayate, then continue on to Tafi del Valle. Unfortunately the beginning of December also heralds the beginning of the rainy season, and we were pleased to have our raincoats and umbrella with us! Cafayate is located on the infamous Ruta 40 which runs almost 5000 km from La Quiaca in the North to Rio Gallegos in the South. As this was the last we were going to see of this road which has dominated so many of our travels, we decided to stay in the Hostel Ruta 40. It proved a good choice and we met fellow travellers from Denmark (who told us that Finland is not considered part of Scandanavia! We are ALWAYS ... read more

Happy Thanksgiving! Actually, being Brits, we didn't know what Thanksgiving was all about. We are thankful to Wikipedia for what we now know and were surprised to learn that in Canada it is celebrated almost two months earlier. Kat, one of our American friends and fellow English teachers, invited us up to Vaqueros, about half an hour North of Salta, to help celebrate. We found ourselves part of a big party consisting of about 20 people including several children, and the whole day was conducted in a mix of English and Spanish. It was great fun. (Evil) Kat had been out earlier in the day to select and slaughter a turkey. We're sure she enjoyed it as she was very keen to show off her photos of the massacre!!!! South America » Argentina » Salta » Campo Quijano November 12th 2007

Well, the best laid plans of mice and men, as they say! Our plan for the weekend was to go to Rosario de la Frontera and relax in the thermal pools of the posh hotel there. On arrival at the bus station we were told the bus was full, despite assurances earlier in the week that there was no need to buy in advance! That'll teach us for believing what we are told. We've been here long enough after all!!! Instead we took the local collectivo bus from outside the Central Market on Av. San Martin to Campo Quijano. It cost just 1.75 pesos to get there, and curiously 1.25 to get back! Not sure how that happened. The ride is about 40 minutes through the Southern limits of the city of Salta, past the airport ... read more

South America » Argentina » Salta » Cafayate October 20th 2007

With only 2 months left in Salta, we are rapidly trying to visit old haunts and explore some new places. During a weekend in Cafayate we managed to do both! There was good news on the transport front. El Indio who run the buses there have now bought some "combi" minibuses which do the trip in 3 hours. There are slower options still available but the price is the same whichever bus you are on. We stayed in the Hostel Del Angel again,, but new owners have tidied it up a bit and doubled the price. Still, with a bit of negotiating we got the price reduced a bit, and it's a comfortable place to stay if you are a couple looking for somewhere less hectic than the usual backpacker hangouts. It was the weekend of ... read more
