South America » Argentina » Chubut » Gaiman December 4th 2006

Gaiman is a small town some 17 km from Trelew and famous for its Welsh tea houses. Who were we to say no? After traipsing around and seeing the Welsh chapels and the first house to be built in the town, we tried to do the cultural thing and see the museums - but they were never open. We gave up at 3.20 (they were supposed to open at 3pm and we had already wandered around since 11am) and went for our tea. Inside Ty Gwyn (White House in Welsh) it was like something straight out of the Welsh valleys. The tea was amazing with so much bread and butter, scones, and a large variety of sweet cakes. We felt really gordo afterwards!! We even heard some Welsh being spoken in the street. Even though we ... read more

South America » Argentina » Chubut » Punta Tombo December 4th 2006

A hundred kilometres or so South of Trelew is Punta Tombo, home of the largest colony of Magellan penguins in the world. It was a bit of a tedious journey there through landscapes which rarely changed. Still, our guide told us all about sheep farming and the production of wool to keep us entertained. As we got closer she changed the topic to the penguins and suddenly we all started to pay a bit more attention! How to tell you about the penguins? They were cute, surprisingly noisy, and also a bit smelly!! There were hundreds of thousands of them wandering around, going for a swim (or maybe a bite to eat), sunbathing, or having an afternoon kip. It was amazing to get so close to them and they are obviously used to tourists clicking away ... read more

South America » Argentina » Chubut » Trelew December 4th 2006

We had mentally prepared for a 20 hour bus journey to Trelew (pronounced Tre-le-ooh for some reason) so imagine our relief when it turned out to be ONLY 19 hours! We were glad to have paid the extra for cama seats as we got enough sleep to lead a normal life from the off. Trelew was founded in 1865 when a group of Welsh settlers fled their homeland where they were not allowed to speak their own language freely. (We English really were terrible!) They were granted land in Patagonia and arrived at Puerto Madryn on June 12th before moving gradually westward. There’s not a tremendous amount to see and do in Trelew itself, but we found some interesting sights. The museum is set in the old railway station. It houses a collection of artefacts about ... read more

Hey, her hips really don't lie! Despite another view from outer space we thoroughly enjoyed the concert. I was surprised by how much Arabic and Indian influence there is in her music. The belly dancing was amazing!! So, that's Shakira, Juanes and La Oreja de Van Gogh that we've managed to see. Just Maná to complete my wish list of Latin singers, and possibly Julietta Venega. Here's hoping that next year is as productive for concerts for us to see.... read more

We have been in BA for almost a year now, and as it's our final week I thought I would put a few pictures online of the city. The Galeria Pacifica have their Christmas tree up already (and the Americans haven't even celebrated thanksgiving!). The temperatures are creeping up and everyone is returning to the parks to make a start on those summer tans. It seems that dogs have been banned from the parks though. The police were going around with megaphones today and making sure all dogs were on leads. So today there was no threat to our lunch from any canine friends or foes! Last week we saw the somewhat amusing site in a Plaza Serrano bar where a young lady had her burger snatched from her plate by a stray dog. It's always ... read more

South America » Uruguay » West » Carmelo November 5th 2006

Yes, it's visa time again so we decided to go off to Carmelo in Uruguay. Having visited Colonia and Montevideo, we just wanted to go somewhere different. Fortunately, Cacciola have a ferry from Tigre which is much cheaper than Buquebus! The journey over the water took a little over 3 hours and we were a bit surprised by how shabby the boat seemed, and disturbed by the lack of safety instructions or lifejackets (not that we expected to sink!). Arriving in Carmelo at night was good as the customs people only gave a cursory glance to our bags in their search for foodstuffs which they feel may bring the dreaded Foot & Mouth disease to Uruguay. Our uneaten oranges escaped! Then came the search for a hotel. We wanted to go to the Rambla but were ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Pilar November 5th 2006

We were looking for somewhere different to spend Sunday so we thought why not give Pilar a go. Historically it's a very important place in Argentina so surely there must be something to see and do there......? The "Enjoy Argentina" website tells us "The "Treaty of Pilar", signed by Governors Sarratea (Buenos Aires), Lopez (Santa Fe) and Ramirez (Entre Rios), which put an end to the civil war amongst these provinces, and where the central power in Buenos Aires agrees on the principles of national federalism, was signed in this historic town in 1820; in this way, the bases of what was later to be legislated on the constitution of 1853, were laid." And, more encouragingly, "The great boost the municipality has given to the tourist and cultural offers in the past few years, in the ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Tandil October 24th 2006

Tandil is a 5 hour bus journey from BA but don't let that put you off. It's one of very few places in teh province of Buenos Aires that actually has hills. That's really why we went as the flatness of the pampas was getting to us a bit. How lucky we were with the weather though. BA was sweltering in 30-odd degrees of Spring heat and Tandil was only a few degrees below. It was great. We stayed with Kathleen who has so many amazing stories to tell. She breeds budgerigars and you can see more at her website where you can contact her too. Her house is amazing and we had the annex to ourselves. That made for such a relaxing weekend. The city of Tandil is quite picturesque as you can see from ... read more
