Middle East » Syria » South » Damascus June 20th 2008

Damascus, Syria, part of the so-called axis of evil and a place where all the signs are in Arabic which might just as well be ancient Greek or Aramaic! So, why did we choose to come here? Well, 35 degrees of sunshine almost guaranteed for the next three months, a job with the British Council, and about as much hummus as we can manage to eat are just three of the reasons! The people seem very friendly and we are managing to communicate in restaurants in broken English, the odd word of French and lots of pointing. We MUST learn a few words of Arabic!! The flight from Heathrow was uneventful. The stressful part was check-in where the BMI desk was unbelievably strict about excess baggage. For the first time in our travels we have been ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London June 18th 2008

Our last week in England was a bit hectic to say the least. We tried to fit in visits to as many people as possible, so apologies to those we ended up missing out. Maybe next time! We returned to Chislehurst, Kent, to stay with Trish’s sister, Sue, for a few days. Whilst there we visited Knole Park in Sevenoaks. The sun shone all day for us and even the deer came out to see us. It was like a scene from a non-cartoon Bambi at times! We had our picnic lunch looking out over the golf course. Nice of them to provide benches by the tees!!! It was also too good an opportunity to miss to go into London. For Trish it’s not a great day out having lived there for years, but for Russ ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » Wales » Bridgend June 8th 2008

Does anyone want to buy our house? We have just been back there for a week to spruce it up a bit but now is not a great time to have a house on the market. Still, maybe someone out there fancies a bit of good value by UK standards. It's only a couple of minutes walk from Tesco and the town centre, a 2 minute drive to the M4 motorway, 15 minutes to the coast and 45 minutes to the Brecon Beacons. It has it all really! SO SOMEBODY BUY IT PLEASE!!!!! It was good to be back, but our life is about travelling and teaching now, so it's time to make a break. Wales has been great and we are really going to miss some of Bridgend's finest restaurants, notably the Natraj and Zia ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Devon » Exmouth June 2nd 2008

We had a tough 6 hour drive down to Devon in terrible weather. It was our first real experience of traffic jams on British motorways since we got back. Very unpleasant!! Our week in the village of Thorverton, near Exeter, Devon, was both relaxing and hectic. With new nephew William to welcome into the family plus Jack (4), Bryony (5) and Kaitlyn (7) to keep us occupied, we were pleased to be house-sitting for a friend of the family. The peace and quiet saved our sanity!!!!!!!!!!!! Don’t get me wrong, it was great to see them but it made us realise what a good decision it was not have kids of our own!!!!! The weather wasn’t great a lot of the time but we still managed to get out and about. We had a wonderful afternoon ... read more

The great weather continued for another week. It is amazing! England in the spring sunshine can be a very colourful place. We were staying in Cleethorpes with Russ’ Mum and spent a lot of time outdoors which was a bonus. We are more used to cold drizzle and freezing winds whenever we go there!! Within the space of just five days we celebrated the birthdays of Russ, his older brother Rick (in Moscow to watch Man Utd!) and both of Russ’ grandmothers. It was nice to see everyone, and his Nan even had a party. Brewster Bear was on hand to entertain the great-grandchildren but, despite his help, we were exhausted by the end of the day! We also got to see Russ’ sister Rachael play with her band. Brother-in-law Paul was also there. The evening ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Essex » Frinton-on-Sea May 15th 2008

Returning to England, the last thing we expected was a prolonged period of good weather. Not that we are complaining of course! We stayed with Trish’s parents in Frinton-on-Sea on the Essex coast where we hardly saw a cloud in the sky! It’s always nice to walk along the seafront when the sun is shining. There were some very brave people about, stripped down to the bare minimum and sunbathing on the beach or, even braver, swimming in the sea! Needless to say we didn’t join them! We also took a stroll along the promenade at Harwich. Once again the weather was perfect and people were braving the beach. The view over to Felixstowe was interesting with the giant cranes standing proud over the shipyards. We even got to see a “Thames barge” on the water. ... read more

Bye, bye, South America, hello England! It wasn't a bad trip home. No problems leaving Rio despite being 5 days over our tourist visa (no fine, no comment, just an exit stamp!) and a resonable flight to Madrid with Iberia but only a couple of hours sleep. Then another couple of hours with British Airways to Heathrow and great relief to come in at Terminal 1 NOT 5. Our bags were first off for the first time in our lives!!!! We took the tube (metro, underground, subte, subway) to Victoria then a surface train to Brighton. It was good to be in Sussex by the sea. It was freezing in the evening though as the lead photo shows! We have been very lucky with the weather since we got back and the sun has shone every ... read more

South America » Brazil » Rio de Janeiro » Rio de Janeiro April 28th 2008

Hooray! The sun has been out for a whole week. We've been making the most of it with a couple of hours of bronzing every day. No swimming though. Look at the panoramic photo above and you'll see why. Great for surfers, lousy for us! The series of pictures was on a day when we thought the waves were huge, but for a few days they were much, MUCH bigger! We've been trying to wrap up the tourist trail here. We took a tram up to the Santa Teresa district. It was a bit disappointing up there as we expected something really touristy but you had to look hard to find the things you might want to see. The museum was tiny with a small but interesting collection of tram artefacts, memorabilia and old photos. We ... read more

With the continued absence of the sun, we have had to find other things to do, although we do try to go to the beach if the sun shines even for an hour! Football: The Maracana Stadium once hosted 200,000 supporters at a single game of football. That, I believe, remains the world record. Nowadays the capacity is less than half of that thanks to an all-seating arrangement. We'd like to go to a game here before we leave Brazil but time is running out! For now we made do with a visit to the stadium. After the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff and the Boca Museum in Buenos Aires it was quite a disappointing experience. There is no guide, you just simply wander around looking at a few wall displays, take a lift up the viewing ... read more

So, we escaped the rain in the mountains and headed to Rio de Janeiro where it was also raining! What an anticlimax!! The first night we stayed in a hostel in Copacabana. It wasn't the best hostel in the world and the prices are astronomical. Luckily we found an apartment more or less straight away. Maria at It's All Brazil gave us a good discount as we are here for 3 weeks and we were able to move in straight away. The apartment is literally 2 minutes walk from Copacabana beach and is very comfortable. So now we are self-catering, maybe we can shift some of those pounds the wonderful breakfasts have been putting on us over the months!! When you think of Rio, you think of sun, sand, samba, football and the figure of Christ ... read more
