We didn’t get around to doing some of the things we were going to, such as the zoo, mainly due to laziness! The climate kind of makes you that way!! Also, getting information about various places has proved much more challenging than we expected. We did find our way to the banana market which was interesting. The huge piles of bananas were quite extraordinary, as were the heaps of watermelons and papaya. About half an hour from the Cathedral on the 120 bus is the beach resort of Ponta Negra. It seems strange to find sandy beaches on a river, but the Rio Negro has several. At this time of year there seems to be only one small beach actually in the town, but that’s not what we went there for. We were looking for Marina ... read more

It’s been a whirlwind couple of days. Now that we are back to being proper tourists again it seems we have to pack so much in! So, we left Porto Velho behind and flew with Gol to Manaus. Here we are staying in the Manaus Hostel (not to be confused with the Hostal Manaus!) which is nice but stretching our budget a bit too far. We have found cheaper digs in the Hotel Rei Arthur and that’s where we’ll be spending the second half of our time here. You’ll find out what we think about it in Manaus Part 2! Manaus is a city with a population of over 2 million these days. Life is centred on the port and the River Amazon trade. There’s certainly more hustle and bustle here than we have been used ... read more

Yessssssssssss! We finally managed to leave Rurrenabaque. It was a bit touch and go during the morning (excuse the aviation pun for those in the know) but by the time our flight arrived it was sunny and the skies were blue. Amaszonas had been fantastic with confirming our onward flight the following morning but we had to spend another night in Trinidad because the connections don’t quite work out. Guayamarin is a border town with no land border. At the airport a rickshaw took us to Bolivian immigration where we were stamped out of the country. The currency exchange desks at the port were offering an abysmal rate for our Bolivianos so we gave them a miss, gambling on either exchange or ATMs being available on the other side. A small boat then took us over ... read more

We were met at Rurrenabaque airport by Wilman. He’s a guide with the San Miguel del Bala jungle lodge and an integral part of their community of some 250 people. It was great to arrive to find someone holding a card with your name on it. It makes you feel kind of special!! A couple of hours later we were on a motorised canoe weaving between the logs and fallen branches flowing on the River Beni. The water level was quite high so going upstream was slow going, and it was surprisingly rough in places. 45 minutes later we arrived in darkness at the jungle lodge which was to be our home for the next week. The idea was to do some volunteer work. In all of my correspondence with the lodge I thought we had ... read more

We hadn’t planned on staying in Trinidad. Actually, that’s not true. We had planned on it, but the roads were impassable so we booked a flight from Santa Cruz to Rurrenabaque. The road re-opened the day we flew so we could have gone by bus. Anyway, Plan B turned into Plan A and we ended up staying a night in Trinidad because it had been raining all day in Rurre making the runway there unusable. Still with me?!! So, courtesy of Amaszonas Airlines, we stayed in the Moxos Palace Hotel in Trinidad overnight. The sign outside has four stars on it, but we are certain they are only there because they make a pretty pattern. They can’t be there to signify anything otherwise there would probably be no stars at all. Well, maybe one to be ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Santa Cruz Department » Santa Cruz January 13th 2008

It’s hard to believe that we have now spent 3 weeks (on and off) in Santa Cruz. Okay, so we had a luxurious Christmas and have visited Vallegrande, Samaipata and Buena Vista, but the time has come to leave the comforts of this tropical city behind and head to the Amazon region. We haven’t really done much in the city, especially since returning here in the New Year. We went out to nearby Cotoca one morning but most of the ceramic shops have closed now. Still, it was interesting to see the items for sale in the one remaining workshop. Unfortunately ceramics and rucksacks don’t go too well together so we were unable to buy anything. A lot of the small shops have been replaced by Internet cafes and telephone centres. Even the church was closed ... read more

We took a few days out from our stay in Santa Cruz to pay a visit to Buena Vista. The small town is just 100km away and in a trufi (a shared taxi from the ex-terminal) it’s less than two hours away. There aren’t too many options in the centre for accommodation but we have always been comfortable in La Casona in the past. The building work there is complete and we had a comfortable couple of days relaxing in the hammocks. Last time we were there, a little over 3 years ago, they were in the process of building new rooms including a restaurant and bar. It all looks very nice but the new rooms are for the family and the restaurant and bar haven’t opened! Very Bolivian plans those were!! Still, any shortfalls are ... read more

We saw in the New Year in Samaipata. In Quechua it means “Rest in the Hills” so that’s exactly what we did! Not much has changed in the 2 years since we were last here and so it still retains the tranquil charm that first attracted us. We stayed in the wonderful Andoriña Hostal where we met lots of great people. Hostal owner Andres has decorated the place with his own travel photos from around the world. It made for a relaxing few days making friends and exploring places both new and familiar. The weather wasn’t too kind to us though. We had a trip organised for New Years Eve but the rain was so heavy that it wouldn’t have been possible to get to the Cloud Forest. It was rescheduled for New Years Day, with ... read more

Russ awoke to his ultimate nightmare! A 6 hour uncomfortable bus journey lay ahead, we were checking out of our 4 star luxury hotel and anticipating rather more humble accommodations, and he was struck down with the runs! Thank God for Immodium!! The pills worked and the journey wasn’t too bad, but reclining padded seats would have been nice! Anyway, we were soon in Vallegrande and checking in to accommodation which certainly was more humble. Trish went off exploring the place whilst Russ tried to sleep off his sickness. Fortunately the next day he was well enough to go exploring too. Vallegrande is nothing special. On reflection we think this trip should only be for die-hard Che fans. It’s not easy to do independently and in reality there’s not that much to see. In the centre ... read more

We have just enjoyed a few lovely, relaxing days in the Hotel Cortez in Santa Cruz de la Sierra. Christmas day was especailly nice as the sun shone all day and we were able to make the most of the swimming pool. It's been great to revisit some old haunts but we were disappointed to find the Irish Pub overlooking the central plaza closed for refurbishment. The Cuban restaurant nearby did us proud for Christmas Eve though. The Plaza 24 Septiembre has been wonderfully decorated with angels playing instruments and a million lights. It was spectacular at night with carols from the Cathedral's mass echoing around. On Christmas Day we visited the plaza in the evening. It was full of people, with lots of children sporting new bikes or plastic guns with flashing lights! On Boxing ... read more
