As it had clouded over in Paraty we decided to leave the coast behind for a few days. To do so we had to travel first to Rio de Janeiro, but only to the bus station, the city will have to wait. The coastal road was magnificent, even in the dull lighting provided by the leaden skies. The road takes you past the two nuclear power plants and even on a day like this, the coastal waters seem an eerie incandescent turquoise. Or maybe we just imagined that!! We changed buses at Rio (surprisingly easy) and headed to Petropolis in the mountains to the North. On the way out we caught our first glimpse of the famous statue of Christ overlooking the city, but soon we disappeared into the mist, then the fog, then the low ... read more

Wow, Brazil's Green Coast, the "Costa Verde" is amazingly beautiful.......when the sun shines! We had a great few days in Paraty, soaking up the sun, chilling on a boat, but then our luck with the weather changed! Paraty is a wonderful place with a lovely historic centre. The cobbled streets are nice to look at but hellish on flip-flop-clad feet! At times of exceptionally high tides around full moons the streets even flood as the sea comes in. The postcards show incredible pictures of this phenomenon but we were a couple of weeks out of sync to see it. Paraty's beaches are okay but nothing special. Still, when all you want is an hour or two of sun, it's fine. Apparently nearby Trindade is much better but on the day we planned to go there we ... read more

An hour or so out of Sao Paulo is the port of Santos. This is where most of the immigrants arrived and from here they travelled by train to SP. Getting there was quite easy, we took the Metro to the end of the blue line then a bus all the way to Santos. The journey was interesting too as the road zig-zags down the impressive escarpment and you get amazing views. Well, we did on the way down but then the weather turned against us! We wanted to do three things in Santos: the historic centre, Santos football stadium, and the beaches. Wandering around the historic centre was easy and interesting whilst the weather was good. There are lots of old buildings in various states of disrepair and/or restoration. The train station is said to ... read more

We ended up staying almost a week in Sao Paulo. Our central location made it easy to get around and to get out of the city. To us it seemed like a spacious and more modern version of Buenos Aires, but without the tango and steak! At the heart of the city is the Edificio Altino Arantes, Sao Paulo’s answer to the Empire State Building. It is known locally as the Santander Tower and previously as the Banespa Tower after its current and former owners, both banks. It took us three attempts to go up to the viewing platform. The first two frustrated efforts were impossible because of large groups of schoolchildren! On our third try the weather was glorious and we were happy to have waited. From Ouro Preto we travelled to Sao Paulo via Belo Horizonte. We had a few hours to kill in BH but unfortunately the weather was horrible! We ended up cowering in shops, cafes and even, forgive us, MacDonald’s for an ice-cream!! It’s a shame as the restored train station was nice and there are probably other parts of the city we would have liked. Anyway, we arrived in Sao Paulo at 6am after what was, hopefully, our last long, long distance bus! Thankfully the Plaza Hotel were more than happy for us to check in at a ridiculously early time. The hotel was a good find and is located right in the heart of the city centre. Sao Paulo is a city steeped in history, especially regarding immigration. Millions of people came here over the last ... read more

Easter is taken quite seriously in Ouro Preto. In fact, they produce a whole programme of events for Semana Santa. It was a privilege being there and watching what goes on. Good Friday In the evening we got wind of a procession taking place. We followed the crowds out to the other side of town to one of the many churches dotted around. There we saw the church illuminated in somewhat garish yellow and green. Outside a huge stage had been erected for a recreation of the crucifixion, complete with Roman centurions and a large group of wingèd angels. It was like being at a pop concert or a political rally, but the sight of the candy floss sellers brought you back to Earth with a bump! The mass went on a long, long time and ... read more

We had quite a journey getting to Ouro Preto. In Trancoso we bought bus tickets from an agency from Porto Seguro to Belo Horizonte. The agency was supposed to open at 9am and at 10 the young lady nonchalantly strolled in without neither comment nor apology! She sold us our tickets for the 2pm departure and told us the transfer bus left at 11. That left us 45 minutes to return to our pousada, shower, pack and get to the bus stop. This we managed but there was no 11 o’clock transfer! We had to use the public transport system but at least that is reliable. That meant a bus to Arraial then a ferry over to Porto Seguro. The ferry was free for some reason so that was a bonus. Then we took a taxi ... read more

We are staying in Ouro Preto, but that’s the next blog! From there you can take a wonderful steam train ride out to nearby Mariana on the Trem da Vale. It only operates on Friday, Saturday and Sunday so time your visit well! The trip begins at Ouro Preto train station which has been nicely restored and also houses a small museum. As well as various artefacts, there are interactive displays (also in English!) and a model railway for the real enthusiast. It’s only to see though, not to play with! You can, however, play with a variety of musical instruments in the “environmental-acoustic car”. The steam train, Smoky Mary, was built in the Czech Republic by Skoda but we didn’t quite catch how it ended up in Brazil. There wasn’t too much English commentary or ... read more

We had a bit of a torrid time leaving Itacare for Trancoso. The easiest way was going to be on a touristy minibus but there were never enough people wanting to make the journey. Instead we ended up on public transport which involved one bus to Ilheus then another to Porto Seguro. We had to stay in Porto Seguro overnight which wasn’t too bad. At the bus station we had been told that nothing around the port area was open but we found a nice pousada and the promenade area was very lively, especially on “Pasarela Alcool”, the street with all the bars on it! The next morning we took a ferry from Porto Seguro to Arraial D’Ajuda. It was only a 10 minute crossing and we were met by a bus to take us to ... read more

We took a touristy transfer service from Morros to Itacare. It was possible to do it by public transport but with no real saving in price and a lot more hassle, we bit the bullet and travelled Gringo class in a minibus! On arrival we were met by a team of touts all wanting us to stay with them. When offered a house near the sea for the princely sum of R$30 each (about £9) we were curious enough to take a look. A 4 bedroom house all to ourselves. It was nice, but in the middle of an area with lots of trees and therefore more than the odd mosquito. Still, it was less than 5 minutes to walk to the beach so who were we to complain?! The beach we were close to was ... read more
