I travelled by train from Halle to Leipzig, changed trains and went to Mainz, changed trains and went to Bad Kreuznach. There are a vareity of types of trains from regional ones that stop at every station to the ICE variety that are express. You can just turn up at the station and purchase from a ticket booth or pay €3 extra and purchase from an office. The ICE have dining cars on board and you can take purchases back to your seat, if you are in first class or have a reserved seat with a table they will come around and serve you. €5 bought me a 500ml beer and a meat pattie in a bun. All along the railway line near the towns and cities are garden plots with small sheds/houses. Some are just ... read more

Buchenwald concentration camp near the town of Weimar. Being the 3rd largest camp under the 3rd Reich it was set up in 1938 to deal with the problems of non workers and other dissedents who did not want to be part of the new Germany. Over 56,000 died there from 1938 to 1945 with adults and children being sent there from all over Europe. Gypsies, homosexuals, handicapped, Jews, Jehovah Witnesesses, and political dissedents were among the people from 57 nations who were starved, beaten, tortured, medically experiementated on, forced into work parties and cremated in this place. It is a large site with many of the exisiting buildings still remaining. An audio guide is a must and it explains all the details sensitvely and takes you from point to point. It is not gruesome or depressing ... read more

Halle is a city of around 230,000 near the Saale river. The university has part of its campus right in the middle of the city so there is lots of activity and young people around. The church in the middle of the city, Marktkirche, has a very famous association with Martin Luther the founder of the Lutheran church. He died in Halle so a death mask was made of his face and hands and is on display in the church in a side room. Each church has a magnificent pipe organ and yesterday we were able to listen to the organist practising for a while. Halle was part of the GDR and has many apartment blocks which were once intended for families but now are full of students and low income earners. An orphanage was set ... read more

Yesterday it rained and dribbled and poured and was generally miserable so we visited Dresden which is a big city on the Elbe river. On a warm summer day you would sit in the cafes and near the Elbe enjoing a very scenic city but since it rained we visited the Art Gallery and the church, Frauenkirche a Lutheran church. The church was extensively bombed in the second world war and has been rebuilt almost exactly as it was. The Art Gallery houses an impressive collection of art from the 15th to 18th centuries including Vermeer and Rembrandts and has been in existence for over 300 years. All the art was evacuated during the second world war. Beside the art gallery is also a massive collecton of armour, guns and swords from the early ages. Massive ... read more

Today we travelled to this town which was where Martin Luther was a priest and set out the reforms that created the Lutheran church. The town is set out with museums, shops, cafes, churches and various places that were actual places in Martin Luther's time. Martin Luther was a priest in the Catholic church and was concerned with the excesses and corruption within the church. He preached here and focussed on the 10 commandments as a creed for living. When he saw that this was not being followed he delivered 95 theses to the church and posted this on the church door for all to see. This set out the schism which divided the catholic church and created the Lutheran church. He married in his later life and had children and created many other reforms that ... read more

My last day in Istanbul was spent on firstly on leisurely cruise on the Bosphorous sea. This important water way connects the Marmar Sea and the Black Sea and is open to all ships. Massive palatial homes are built right on the waters edge complete with pools and pavilions and will cost millions of Turkish Lire. People enjoy fishing and some brave souls were swimming, with one area having a beach. After visting a botanical garden right in the inner city we took a minibus to The Sapphire which is tallest tower in Europe, slightly taller than the Eiffel Tower and some big tower in Frankfurt. Magnificent views of the whole of Itstanbul and the seas. Istanbul to Turkey is 2 1/2 hours by plane, Lufthansa is a great choice to fly this route and cost ... read more

Yesterday Duygu, Gülnor (Değer's mother) and me went to Buyuk Island which is a 1 hour ferry trip from Istanbul. This is one of a group of islands of the coast with summer houses as well as permanent dwellings where people go to relax, fish and enjoy life. There are many hotels and cafes but you rent apartments if you want to stay. Horse drawn carriages take people around on Buyuk island which is very hilly. Gypsy people run this business as well as sell,ng flowers to people getting off the boat. A garland of flowers looks so pretty in all the young girls hair. You can also rent bicycles to take you around the island. We rented a horse drawn carriage and the poor horses struggled their way to the top area. From there we ... read more

Another whirlwind day of visiting here there and everywhere. Today's agenda includes Topkapi Palace, the Post Office, A ferry trip to Kadikoy which is the Asian side of Istanbul and going past the Maiden Tower followed by another night out eating. Topkapi palace was made in 1500's by a Sultan and occupies the most wonderful piece of land overlooking the sea and Golden Horn. It has many pavilions, large grounds, and was home to a harem, many wives and many more servants. The treasures of the day are carefully preserved and displayed including so many jewels. One area was devoted to the artifacts of the prophet Mohammed including his footprints. This area included an Iman chanting from the Koran making it very atmospheric. The Asian side of Istanbul includes spice markets, fish markets and many alleyways ... read more

Life seems to start off more slowly here. I'm not sure if its because its Summer holidays or it's what happens normally. Breakfast consists of sliced sausage, cheese, olives, little buns filled with cheese, tomato and cucumber and little glasses of tea. Lunch around 2pm is lots of little dishes set out in the middle of the table, emphasis on vegetables such as eggplants, tomatoes, beans and onions and some meat plus a rice dish that has little bulger wheat noodles cooked into it. It's light until around 9-30pm which ıs about the time we seem to eat each night. So after lunch we went to Miniaturk which is a type of theme park with all the significant historical sites and ancient momuments all set out in a mini world. Each stop has an audio which ... read more
