Halle is a city of around 230,000 near the Saale river. The university has part of its campus right in the middle of the city so there is lots of activity and young people around.

The church in the middle of the city, Marktkirche, has a very famous association with Martin Luther the founder of the Lutheran church. He died in Halle so a death mask was made of his face and hands and is on display in the church in a side room.
Each church has a magnificent pipe organ and yesterday we were able to listen to the organist practising for a while.
Halle was part of the GDR and has many apartment blocks which were once intended for families but now are full of students and low income earners.
An orphanage was set up over 350 years ago in Halle which provided quality education for many children and this is still there today and is the site of the teachers training facility.
