Happy Easter everyone, hope you all over indulged on chocolates! Well I had an awesome time in Brussels. Wasn’t really expecting much having heard that the city is pretty boring, but ended up really enjoying the place. Brussels is of course basically the European ‘capital’ being home to the European Parliament (not a very visually interesting building), and, despite what Jeremy Clarkson might say (and if you don’t know who Clarkson is, well watch SBS on Monday nights), the EU is pretty cool in my opinion. The city itself is not overly interesting, sure there are a few cool buildings but no standouts like Paris or London. Some parts of the city are really nice, there are the usual tourist haunts plus there are the dives (as well as dog poop galore on the sidewalks) but ... read more

Coolies so after a pretty long flight from London, arrived in Cairo Sunday night to a city that is as big and as busy as I imagined. First stop was the Egyptian Museum. The pieces on antiquity are laid out in some chronological order, but things are generally pretty shambolic inside and I kept going in circles, retracing my steps to make sure nothing was missed. I am still amazed that these artefacts have lasted for two, three, four thousand years but of all the items on display, perversely it was the mummified humans and animals that most fascinated me. After the museum I had to take a stroll to the Nile. The stories of the Nile Delta and its importance to Egyptian cultivation (and hence its civilization as a whole) always interested me in school ... read more

Firstly, hello to all the newbies I’ve added to my blog mailout - hope you don’t mind me adding you, if you want to be removed just let me know (honest, I won’t be offended …). So its been a few weeks since my last update (sorry Tam) and not a great deal has happened. The other week I moved into a new flat - still with my flat mate Laura, long story but when I moved in with Laura the place we were in was just temporary whilst the old building was repaired for flood damage. We’ve now moved into the flat proper. Things are going well, still got my ensuite, a good sized room and a cool little ledge which I can sit on and look out over the street and read. First up a slightly sad but I think cool thing: the other week Manchester had its first snow of the season. It wasn’t much but it was the first time I’ve seen snow fall and it was kinda cool seeing and feeling the snow from my bedroom window. This weekend I've been in Stockholm, Sweden - random trip this one, loving all things Swedish (from their uber cool bands to Ikea - lol) I couldn’t turn up the prospects of a cheap flight, cool hostel and a good concert. Arrived way late (early ???) Saturday morning after leaving Manchester Friday evening (and after hassles getting to Liverpool airport, long bus ride from Stockholm airport to the city centre and then a long walk plus getting lost en route to my hostel at 2am …). My hostel ... read more

Sunny Marrakech You can tell I'm slowly becoming a Pom when the thought of a few days of blue skies and 20'c maximum temps is like heaven on earth! Absolutely loved the sun in Marrakech and spent as much time in the sun as I could and even got a little sun burnt (yes bad I know but oh so good!). Marrakech as a holiday destination is definitely on the up and up with a fancy new airport soon to open, heaps of development going on and more cheap flights from UK/Europe bringing hundreds of tourists to the city - give it a few years and I think it will be one of the more popular sunny weekend breaks. The flight over was pretty spectacular with views of Portugal, Spain, the Rock of Gibraltar etc. Once ... read more

Yes your read correctly, your eyes are not deceiving you, I’m talking sport … Maria pick yourself up off the ground, Kelly I hope you’re proud of me supporting your favourite team. Tonight, thanks to my friend Scott from work who had a spare season ticket, I made my way to the hallowed Old Trafford/Manchester Unit stadium. The stadium is massive (we had to walk up at least 6 flights of stairs), seats 76,000+ (tonight falling 35 short of that figure) and even though we were high up on the Stretford stand, we still ad an awesome view of the whole pitch (field?). At half time it was nil all both sides, the first half saw Man Utd monopolise the play and make several attempts at goal but falling short at each opportunity. Surprisingly there was ... read more

Well, welcome to the new year everyone! Hope you all had a great time no matter what you got up to. Myself, I had a relatively quiet NYE. Vaughan, Lucy and I headed to the Thames for the fireworks but we must have been in the wrong spot (despite the huge number of people around us that would indicate it was the right spot …) as from our vantage spot the fireworks were pretty crap and not a scratch on the Perth Skyshow let alone Sydney’s NYE celebrations. Still we had a fun night and didn’t drink too much (shocking and totally out of character I know!). I didn’t even wake with a hangover which made the train ride home more tolerable than it could have been. I did manage to have a party on my ... read more

Having a great time in Copenhagen, the journey he was a little hellish - bus to London central, then out to Stanstead airport, spent the night at the airport (scaringly I was not the only one, with around 100 travelers passed out wherever they could find a spot in the terminal). The trip was worth it, arriving late on Xmas eve, I quickly showered and, on the recommendation of the hostel staff, went across the road to a community hall for a Christmas dinner. Had an awesome time, there was a table of fellow hostel kids so got to make some new friends, eat lots (including a special, yummy vego nut loaf for me) and drinks lots - what Christmas is all about! So after a bottle and a bit of red wine (hey they kept ... read more

Christmas is nearly upon us so I thought I’d send an update before everyone takes their Chrissie holidays. Well first up - I was meant to be in Faro in south Portugal today but clearly I’m not! Had my work Christmas party Friday night, had planned a quiet night but then I stumbled upon the Anyone that knows of my form at past Mallies Xmas parties would think it crazy that I would even consider flying at 8am on the morning after an Xmas party and I was definitely in my usual form at the Horwich Farrelly Xmas party - the open bar and the corresponding double jacks n coke and beers that flowed a little too freely resulted in me dancing away in fine form and partying late in the night (despite workmates reminding me ... read more

Well how’s life in wall-to-wall Labor land? I did have a little party on my own last Saturday after watching the ABCs election coverage online and had an extra beer when I realised Johnny would also lose his seat (*grin*) - sorry to any liberal supporters (not that there were many this election!). I’ve now settled into my new home and am rather happy with the move despite struggling moving all my stuff on my own and on foot (I can’t believe how much junk I’ve accumulated in 6 months). There are some pics of my new place, the apartment is on the 6th floor in complex that is about 200m from the coach station for trips to London and 300m from the main Piccadilly rail station, the same distance from the city centre shops and ... read more
