Finished my first full week of work since leaving Mallies - the 5 day working week is really far too long! Everything is going well so far. Naturally the first thing I did was clean and reorganise my office (Tony had a habit of keeping paperwork all over the place and anyone that saw my desk at work would know I like a nice clean desk!). Despite trying to clear a backlog of work, the week was fairly uneventful with no major problems. One of the Partners and junior solicitor left on Wednesday so we went out for lunch, got to meet the crew from the other office as well which was nice. Been here now for over 3 months which is the longest time I’ve been away from home. Strangely I’m not really homesick, sure ... read more

Wednesday Well despite my hangover, woke up early enough this morning to head out for a bit of nature. The weather was beautiful, nice blue skies. On the way had to get some sustenance so a quick coffee and a yummy mars bar muffin (this is turning into Pete’s food and gig blog isn’t it? Well they are my two favourite things!!!). Walked south of the city to the Crags. Beautiful scenery and only took around 15 minutes to climb despite having to navigate rocky ‘paths’ and heaps of tourists. The 360’ views of the city from the top are superb especially on such a fine day. My friend’s pubs was close by so I dropped by to have a look, just a little local bar for local people. The apartment is above the pub and ... read more

Edinburgh is still great and still chock-a-block with tourists everywhere, the locals must hate it. Walking down the main drag along the Royal Mile there are thousands of people and every step there is a street performer or someone touting for you to come see their show. There are crazily dressed people, random zaniness and a great vibe - see pics. Tuesday was spent doing a few tourist things and visiting the Andy Warhol collection at the National Gallery. The exhibition included all the iconic pieces (the Campbell’s soup cans/Brillo pads/Coke stuff; the Marilyn/Liza/Elvis/Jackie Kennedy portraits) and also included some stuff I wasn’t aware of like his fascination with death, war and religion and the fact that h was a massive hoarder and hardly threw anything out and his collection included 612 archive boxes of ‘time ... read more

Left Berlin early Saturday morning, quick flight into London and caught up with Vaughan and Lucy. Checked out their new place which is in an awesome location (nice and close to King Cross Station) and a decent size for a London one bedder. Vaughan’s bro was in town so we caught the tube to Hammer(time)smith for a few beers in a nice little pub (despite the unusual ration of babies to adults). London put on a spectacular day, nice and warm and an almost cloudless sky. Then it was a late night coach to Edinburgh. Lucy had earlier told me of her recent coach dramas and I ‘knocked on wood’ that I had good experiences to date. I think Vaughan and Lucy need a new coffee table ‘cos it surely can’t be made of wood - ... read more

A bit late but this site went down and lost all the blogs entries ... Beer here there and everywhere, you can drink beer pretty much anywhere - on the street, on public transport, at work and at any time of the day (why not have a beer on the way to work???). Claire Munro blogged about Prague being nuts for beer (the beer on the marathon was classic), but Berlin mist be almost as bad and when a bottle of beer is cheaper than water there’s something seriously wrong (although awesomely good) about a place! Speaking of which, went out Wednesday night with a couple from Melbourne I met on my tour the other day. Went back to Tacheles which is awesome outside at night and with random live music and being surrounded by the ... read more

Finally I have some proper travels booked! Head to Berlin on Monday and staying until Saturday and then I’m off to Edinburgh for the festival until the following Thursday and then its down to London for the weekend returning to Manchester Sunday morning. Had the day off work today, went and watched the Simpsons movie. After years of lead up, the movie itself was a tad disappointing - really just an hour and a half long normal episode (even the movie made fun of having to pay to see what we see live on tele), there was nothing special about the animation, storyline or characters (and many regulars appeared only briefly - where were Skinner, Patty, Selma, Dr Hibbert, Groundskeeper Willie etc). Still it was enjoyable but yeah nothing special. I also went to the ... read more

I’ll keep this one brief. Had Thursday off this and then was on my own at work on Friday (I survived that little test). On Monday work will decide what happens from now on - hoping to be free to go traveling mid week. Weather has been crap, Thursday was all sunshine but the rest of the week has been almost non stop rain which caused flooding down south. I’ve had a cold the past few days, going to an outdoors gig last Sunday in the cold and rain (huddling under my umbrella) probably wasn’t such a smart idea …. Thursday night I went to an amazing gig, Canadian singer songwriter Feist. From slow and smooth numbers, a little rock and some cool dances, she was perfect - definitely one of the best voices going ... read more

Well the first few days at the job have been a definite culture shock! Everyone is really nice (no that’s not the culture shock bit - everyone was nice at Mallies of course!) but its weird be working in such a small office and to not automatically know what I’m doing. I really feel for Rebecca now, here I was training her on MSJ procedures and zipping through this and that so fast its amazing she didn’t get totally confuddled! A definite credit to you Rebecca for not walking out after day one! I know I was tempted not to come back for day two, to make it worse I received a possible job offer from another temp agency, this would have been with some arts body and a long term temp assignment. Hey, who ... read more

Of course my grand plan of leaving the office for a retail/service environment fell through a while back, but I was hoping to get work in someplace other than a law firm (no offence guys, but …). Well, you guessed it, I will be working in a law firm. Still this job is about as far away from Mallies as one can get. The assignment is for a tiny little firm called Otten Penna in Northenden. Otten’s are primarily a legal aid firm and act mainly in family law and probate with no big corporations in sight. The way legal aid works here is that funding is sought from the government and private firms act for the public, the firm then seeks payment from the government within in the allocated budget. The firm has two branches, ... read more

Another week flies bye … Work is still alluding me, have applied for a couple of jobs and the agents are still looking but nothing interesting yet. Have decided that if there are no job prospects by then end of next week I will plan some travels. Weather has been rather bleak, floodings in the Yorkshire district not too far away, the wettest June on record (I must attract bad weather, when I was here in ’04 it was one of the wettest Augusts on record as well). Things wont improve either with a forecast of two weeks summer in mid July and that’s it. Britain Goes Smoke Free - finally! Considering almost everyone smokes here (slight exaggeration I know) not sure how the locals will cope but I’m glad I will no longer have ... read more
