So, I started my new job last Thursday. All good so far although it is a little strange not working in law (speaking of which happy June 30 to Margaret, that makes it two EOFYs I’ve missed now!) so it’s a steep learning curve and the number of systems we use is just crazy: upwards of 11 packages depending on the hospital! All is well with my house mates as well. We had a little house party the other night which was heaps of fun, my house mates can all cook so might have to lift my game in that regard. As my job didn’t start until mid week, I made the most of my last few days of freedom by going on a Contiki like tour to Vancouver. The 1 ½ hour ferry ride there ... read more

First up, I have a home and a job! Yay!!! I’m now living in a house across the water about 3.5km south of downtown (think South Perth/Como area). I am sharing with a guy and two girls, all in their mid 20s and really nice. My room is in the basement so it doesn’t get much sun but I get a huge bedroom and large lounge area so there is heaps of space plus we have a garden which makes a nice chance. The flat share market here is pretty crazy, living close to the city means a tiny room (some people even share a room or sleep in a partly converted living room - no thanks!) and the rent is pricey even then. I’m glad I went against my normal instincts and chose outside of ... read more

Well my first week and a bit in Vancouver has been fun but fairly uneventful. The weather has been up and down but what rain there has been has been pretty light and the temps have allowed shorts and t shirts most days which makes a nice chance to the UK. I’ve been sleeping heaps, the jet lag is partly to blame and I suppose this is also the first time I’ve stopped working/travelling/going out since mid March and the past three months have clearly taken a toll on my body. My hostel is pretty awesome, nothing fancy about the rooms but they put on a great range of activities (a day and a night event almost every day) and I’ve met some great peeps along the way. Tuesday night I went to a free comedy ... read more

Well I’ve arrived in Vancouver and so far all is good. The city is lovely with all the greenery, the bay area, clear blue skies and the snow capped mountains acting as a backdrop to the city. It could have all gone terribly wrong though! On the Saturday I went to the bank to transfer funds back home and to get a statement print out for immigration to prove I had the required funds to enter the country. I was in such a mad rush that I didn’t notice that the teller didn’t give my card back and forgot to ask back for my statement (the first person I asked couldn’t get the printer to work). I realised all this at King’s Cross tube and I managed to scare Vaughan with all my swearing and freakin’out. ... read more

Europe » Spain » District of Madrid » Madrid June 11th 2008

Yep I’m travelling again! After a couple of days back in Manchester (and yet more packing and repacking, broken bags and gaffa tape rescue missions) I headed down to London for a quick catch up with Vaughan and Lucy and a night out to see homeboy Tim Minchin perform a little musical comedy. His support acts were crap but Tim did us proud - never really been into him but he was great (and totally wrong to be performing in a chapel!). Madrid was fun, sadly it was overcast and raining a little each day but still managed to get out and about. First day was just a little vague sightseeing (the gardens near the palace are lovely) followed by a concert by Feist that night (yes the same lady I saw in Paris and she ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris June 5th 2008

Paris is the first Contiki site that I have returned to since my travels of 2004 and I really shouldn’t have left it this long. In typical Contiki style we didn’t get to spend long in Paris (queue forever to get up the Eiffel Tower, a quick browse along the Champs Elysees and a mad dash to see Mona at the Louvre) so I was keen to experience as much as I could in these all too brief two/three days. After the crazy times in Barcelona I definitely wasn’t in the mood for partying so when I got in I took a leisurely stroll to my hostel taking in the Montmarte area and the Moulin Rouge arriving at my hostel around dinner time so naturally it was baguette, red wine and cheese time (the bottle of ... read more

Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Barcelona June 2nd 2008

After finishing up at work on Wednesday (very sad to say goodbye to all my HF friends, thanks for the Shameless DVD guys, you know me so well!), it was an early morning flight Thursday to Barcelona to start the last of my European travels before making my way to Vancouver. Totally loved Barcelona. Sadly I was at my festival all weekend and neglected the major tourist sites but from what I saw I’m definitely eager to come back one day. There is some awesome architecture in Barcelona but the only real tourist sights I got to see were Gaudi’s impressive Sagrada Familia cathedral, Barcelona’s Arc del Triomf and the lovely marina area. Kel - I also had lunch at Maoz (is that still going back home ?). The Primavera festival started the day I arrived ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater Manchester May 28th 2008

Well its been an interesting few weeks I can tell you that. I doubt news trickled back home but the other week Manchester held the UEFA cup final between the Glasgow Rangers and the Russian team St Petersburg, this resulted in an estimated 100,000 Rangers fans descending on the city for what started as fun partying but ended in a mini riot. The city centre was taken over by the Rangers fans and with my work so close to Old Trafford we also had 1000s of Rangers fans streaming past our offices all day - it was all pretty good fun at this stage. What really kicked things off were the two large screens in the city centre malfunctioning just as the match started leaving 1,000s of angry Rangers fans desperate to see the match. Well today marks a year since I left little old Perth for the UK (or the end of the Festival of Pete as Kel would call it). So can’t believe time has flown by so fast, it feels like only yesterday, yet at the same time I feel like I’ve been here forever, it certainly feels like home (well a second home perhaps). So a year, it has been an eventful one: *two temp jobs and three houses *trips to Berlin, Edinburgh, Berlin, Copenhagen, Morocco, Stockholm, Cairo, Brussels and Oslo *England trips to Coventry, Leeds, Liverpool, Blackpool and about 10 trips to London *about 10 comedy performances *and over 115 music gigs (averaging three gigs a week) and seeing somewhere in the vicinity of 300 different bands/artists in total During that time I’ve made a stack ... read more

Had a pretty hectic couple of weeks but this isn’t the place to whinge so I will concentrate on the fun things. Firstly, I’ve finally booked my flight to Canada, I leave London on 15 June and fly directly into Vancouver. Still need to find myself accommodation (hostel booked for now) and start the job searching fun. On the gossip/news front, congratulations to both Karen and Craig and Lisa and Robin who got married recently, naturally Karen and Lisa both looked beautiful - wish I could have been! And congrats to Tam who is pregnant with her first baby. Took a quick trip to Leeds the other week to see Youthmovies, one of my fav bands (I am stalking the band having seen them 6 or 7 times now). Leeds is a lovely uni town and ... read more
