Set off from the hostel in Ljubljana at half 5 on Tuesday morning to catch the 6.20am train to Rijeka, which ended up not leaving until about an hour later due to the late arrival of some zombie carriages which needed to join us. As we went off, I fell asleep almost straight away and was woken up at the Slovenian border station by the police. Half an hour after the lengthy process of clearing both border stations we were scaling the Istrian coastline towards the clump of huge cranes and paneláks which sat on the shore. The confusingly named city "Rijeka", confusing as this word in Croatian just means "river" and the only things remotely like rivers in this city are a small canal/wharf and the meditteranean sea. Perhaps it was named in the same ... read more

So I am here in Ljubljana in a hostel which used to be a prison. Cool as that is, it wasn't an aesthetic choice, more a practical one as it was the closest budget accomodation to the train station, where I have to get a train from at 6.20am tomorrow morning. However I have heard this place waxed out by plenty of backpackers blogging about Ljubljana on here, so I was hoping to be able to see it. The train journeys here were mostly hell, to be honest with you. I was denied buying any food to bring on to me because no cash machines in Praha hlavní nádrazí were working, on the Praha - Salzburg train (6 and half hours) there was no food full stop, and I wanted to massacre my compartment at one ... read more

Ljubljana at night

This weekend has been a blur of people randomly showing up from all over the world, from Brno to the Isle of Wight to outer space and god knows where else and placing themselves within at most a day trip's length of Prague, resulting in me dashing all over the place and finally getting out of the house a fair bit! Unfortunately I havent been using my camera recently, and my internet connection is not letting me upload anything at the moment.. so there are no pictures from it. It began on Thursday, when my friends Gabriela and Jana texted me saying they had come to see some of Jana's relatives in a village called alhostice in Litoměřice district, which is just at the foot of that bastard hill I was trying to climb (and failed) ... read more

Europe » Czech Republic » Plzen Region » Plzen August 6th 2009

I was naive in thinking I wouldn't be leaving Prague until I head south for Ljubljana on the 17th, as this plus the general absence of any company at the moment led me into an absolutely comatose hermit week since finishing the metro challenge on friday, over which my sleeping pattern became progressively less defined and my energy levels falling into oblivion like a baby on a tightrope. The turning point came last night when I found I couldn't even get to sleep, even as the sun had fully risen at 7am, so I decided to give up on bed, but knew staying in the house another day would be a bad idea. So I glued myself to a map of the country and decided to go back to Plzeň for the day. I had an ... read more

...so here's what they call a Feast in the Czech Republic. - It's way too hot here at the moment. That is all. Summer isn't over yet though - I might be doing a trip down to Croatia later on in the month, which will include - cheapo train to Ljubljana in Slovenia, spending a night there, then onwards to Novalja to see my family (including the newest addition), then maybe back via Zagreb, Balaton, and/or Vienna to see a few friends.. May also be doing a short excursion to Munich before I leave to see someone too. Until then I've been mostly living off bread and cheese and polishing off Noggers on a regular basis. čau čau.... read more

So, yesterday morning I logged onto the forum of the Tube Challenge community - a clique of Londoners (and, oddly, Scandinavians) who's holy grail is the official Guinness World Record for visiting - that is, arriving to and/or departing from by train - each of the 270 stations on the London Underground network in the shortest time possible. The challenge is a rather hardcore pursuit which I've attempted numerous times a few years back, including a few times for charity. Despite what you might think it does NOT involve just sitting on trains all day; after the insane amount of planning you need to do, it involves basically spending at least 18 hours running up and down escalators, over passageways, and through the streets of strange suburbs of the city you've never heard of before, while ... read more

Europe » Slovakia » Bratislava Region » Bratislava July 24th 2009

Bratislava really doesn't seem to like me much. I write this from an internet café on the way back from Budapest. I had a really cool time, went there last night for a club night at a boat on the danube which a friend of mine was putting on with some other guys. While it lasted it was good, however we were caught by an absolutely ferocious windstorm which proved having the club on the boat too dangerous, so it was shut down at something like 1:30am, about 4 hours earlier than planned and just as everyone was starting to arrive. So we spent the rest of the evening at my friends flat eating cheese sandwiches and listening to classical music and weird electronic classical stuff. I managed to sleep on the train back as far ... read more

This entry may seem somewhat less like travel writing than my usual and and will have no pictures, as I'm not sure whether writing about this should be considered travel blogging or just generally raising awareness of a certain experience which I've had more than once in my life, and had again on our last night in Slovakia, which we spent in the capital city, Bratislava. Short and to the point, we were mostly offended by how expensive the place was - when we're used to paying 2 euros for a beer and a red wine, going back and paying 11 euros for the same was not particularly welcoming, and we found ourselves waxing lyrical about how much we preferred Banská Bystrica pretty early on in the evening! I suggested that we need to get away ... read more

And so we went onwards to Banská Bystrica (that's pronounced "bun-scar bis-trit-sa"), which along with nearby Zvolen make the two main cities in central Slovakia. We found some creepy little guesthouse which satisfied both of our goth sides quite well, very small and nostalgic, but also very noisy as the walls were probably made from a sheet of cardboard, so you could properly hear everything bumping around. We went for more amazing cheap pizza on the town square on wednesday night and were entertained by a cool little band playing some covers and some songs in slovak (including some translated cover versions!) There was something incredibly eerie about the clocktower, at five to every hour it would chime a new tune on a huge music box, giving the whole place a bit of a fairy tale ... read more
