Day four dawns to, another cobalt sea with white caps. We have been rocking and rolling since we left Fort Lauderdale and it looks like we have a day or two more. I love being rocked to sleep by Neptune. We were late leaving Ft. Lauderdale as many passengers were delayed in Houston or Dallas due to the weather. After two 1/2 hours we cleared the breakwater leaving many passengers still in Texas. Those who had booked through HAL will be flown to Florida and then on the the Azores, one week of their vacation gone. I don't have a head count of the CruiseCritic members who showed up at the Meet and Greet but it had to be close to 150 of the 180 that signed up. I'm glad that is over. Now I can ... read more

Day 4 This was a long, wonderful day. We are in the province of Marche, pronounced marke. Leah, our guide was a local lady and very enthused about introducing Americans to The Marche and Abruzzo. Our first stop was Ascoli. On the way we saw The Marche on the right, Abruzzo on the left, divided by the Tronto river. The right is populated from the valley to the ridges. On the left there are fields and olive groves and all the villages are on the top of the ridge. More about the differences later. We arrived at Ascoli around 10:00am. We walk to the "Old Town" and stop at the first of two major squares. We visit the local cathedral where there is an Renaissance alter piece that is in tact. Most alter pieces have been ... read more

Day 5 Today we traveled across Italy from the Adriatic to the Tyrrhenian sea. It was raining hard when we left at nine and we drove over and under the Apennines. It is fall now and while I missed the brilliant reds, the soft yellows, oranges and rust are interspersed with green pines. Here and there an olive grove clung to the hillside but this area is mainly national parkland. By he time we stopped for lunch we all were ready to stretch our legs. We visited one of the largest wineries in the Castello del Roma area which is famed for their Frascati white wines. The owner greeted us under the trees on a stretch of an old roman road. Armies marched down this road, wagons loaded with wine and olive oil rolled across the ... read more

Day 3 Forgot to mention the bright full moon in a cloudless sky that followed us to the hotel last night. Today the group went to Cortuna as I stayed back and nursed my legs. It was very pleasant to rest, read, catch up on my reading and nap. Pam, my Sicily roomy, who is having mobility issues too, joined me in the afternoon and we shared a taxi to the Periginia chocolate factory. We met the group and had a tour of the works. Think Willi Wonka without the Upa Lupas. We had a chocolate tasting and then toured and then headed to the store. By then, the last thing I wanted was chocolate. Picked up something for Joe and escaped. That night Pat and I joined Pam and Diane for dinner at the hotel. ... read more

Day 4 continued We left Ascoli and the Marche and entered Abruzzo province. While Marche was incorporated into the papal states, Abruzzo was under the authority of the Kingdom of Sicily. The kings of Sicily were from France or Spain did not invest in Abruzzo, Bari or Calabria and they remain poorer and much less developed even today. Our first stop of the afternoon was a family owned olive oil processing plant. Plans to let us pick olives were cancelled because of the muddy fields but we were able to walk into all parts of the plant to see the process at work. OSHA would freak. This is the peak time for making olive oil and we saw it from beginning to end. The plant works like a cooperative. Growers drop off their harvest and the ... read more

Day 3 This is cross country day. If it has to be cloudy and rainy, today is the day and it was. We are driving from Parugia in Umbria across and through the mountains to the Adriatic coastal town of San Bennedicto dal Tronto. Our first stop was a a hill town called Spella. The original plan was to be dropped off at the top and make our way down to a weekly garden market. Because the cobbles were wet and slippery we went to plan two. I stayed on the bus and the rest headed out in the rain. Did I ever make the right choice. The lovely garden market that Mike visited two years ago is now a flea market. Some of the group came back to the comfort of the bus, others wandered ... read more

Day 2 Up at 6:00 and after a lovely breakfast we were on the road at 9:00. Our first stop of the day was in the California region of Umbria. What Mike meant was that we left the bus in Los Angeles and headed for Santa Maria degli Angeli. This imposing church (Saint Mary of the Angles) contains the modest chapel of San Francisco (St. Francis). Hence the California reference. The left side of the church was closed except for confessions. The side chapels looked interesting but I forgot all about them because as I walked around I heard singing. It was coming from the modest structure in middle of the church where Mass was going on. The chapel could hold about twenty worshipers and we stopped in the doorway to listen. This is the chapel ... read more

Day One So far so good. Smooth flight to Rome. I was able to nap on the plane and on the drive to our first stop, Castiglione del Largo. This small, quaint, quiet, off the beaten track town is located on the shore of lake Tresimeno, the largest lake in Central Italy. The day was perfect for touring, partly cloudy and about 55 degrees. We strolled the main street of town past specialty shops, one featuring beans, another pasta, a third cheese. All offered wine for sale. Pat and I were both hungry and while looking for a restaurant that offered outdoor seating in the sun we were overheard by a young Brit who recommended a bar up the street. Sure enough there was seating to the rear on a terrace that overlooked the lake. We ... read more

Tuesday was a day of R&R. We lazed about, read, gambled, napped...did all those things that make a cruise special. Wednesday we docked about 7:00am and by nine the ship was virtually empty. We ate breakfast in the dinning room and the food was uniformly good. After lunch we boarded a catamaran for a snorkel cruise and although the fish sightings were meager, just being in the warm Bermuda water was a treat. I did spot my first scorpion fish. Wednesday we had the pool to ourselves, literally and it was wonderful. Anita and I went for massages and then read. Thursday we took the Rhode Island Fast Ferry to St. George. The sun was warm but the breeze refreshing and the island is so pretty from the water. We got back in time for lunch ... read more
