Suomenlinna/Sveaborg Sea Fortress was our main destination in Helsinki, even in Finland. This fortress is not only just a huge museum, people still live there - at present about 900 inhabitants live there. Every tourist might see except fortification useful houses, hotels and restaurants. Coast of every four islands whose consisted to Suomelinna is fortified - most visible are bunkers and cannons. I went into one of tunnels and I convinced these tunnels are are connected each other. The ranges of cannons' missiles were covering each other. Suomelinna is located at the south from Helsinki and I think that fortress blocked access to town for any aggressors or just keep them away. Fortress had been started to build by the Swedish in 18th century whose ruled Finland at those time. Russian tsar had started to build ... read more

In Helsinki we booked a room in hostel Erottajanpuisto in the Uudemaankatu/Nylandsgatan street. This was town centre and very confortable location for us, we could to get anywhere quite fast and capable. This hostel is so good idea to book any room there - it was expensive (we paid 84 euros) for night but the condition wasn't good. Helsinki has its own architecture style, I can't define to which the most famous ones it refers but definitely this town has a specific atmosphere. I think Helsinki is quite similar to my hometown Szczecin in north west part of Poland. We had a look for town centre: Eteläesplanadi/Södra Esplanaden - this a representative street in Helsinki with the government buildings located there and finally we walked around Kauppatori - the main market beside the sea. Europe » Finland » Southwest Finland » Turku August 22nd 2009

At the second day of our trip we had any free time at afternoon and we decided to go anywhere beyond Turku. We made lighting decision where we would go and we eventually chose one of small and fast ferries whose wharfed close us. We travelled towards island that called Vepsä. This small rocky island is located about 20 kilometers from Turku and hidden amongst the other islands. Getting to Vepsä is possible only from water as well to the most of the small islands at the Finnish coast. Almost every islands are inhabitated and when we were sailed overthere we passed a lot of stylish wooden houses built just aside water. Vepsä - we spotted a map with legend but everything was written in Finnish language. We felt a bit as tourists whose got to ... read more

We arrived to Turku at the later afternoon, we found a bus from airport to town immidiately and we drove. Weather was very nice - blue sky and temperature about 20 celsius above zero. While we were driving we glanced for a map to spot our hotel to find out where exactly it is. So, we got in trouble because the name of street was totally different - couple of minutes we were sitting counfused and I found what's up. In southern Finland all of the place and street names are given in to languages: Finnish and Swedish. Hotel named Scandic Julia was located at Eerinkikatu 9 street but at the map we saw Eriksgatan 9 street. Terrible and we felt like small children whose missed into thick fog. Europe » Poland » Pomerania » Gdansk August 20th 2009

Gdańsk was first town which we have visited. This is Polish historical town and one of the most famous locations in this country. There we hadn't enough time for seesighting and being impressed by the Old Town, but we saw enought to be convinced that's one of the most beautiful towns we have ever seen! Highly recommended to visit! Unfortunately we were too short in Gdańsk to type a bit more interesting entry. Gdańsk was found above 1000 years ago and most of its time has belonged to Poland. From Gdańsk we flew over Baltic Sea to Turku in Finland with wizzair. This airline is roughly the same c#$%p as easyjet, we didn't notice any differences between planes from easyjet and wizzair. I put some links to English Wikipedia regarding visited areas and objects and you ... read more

Europe » Poland » West Pomeranian » Szczecin August 14th 2009

This is my birth town. Pictures have been taken by me and one of my friends at various seasons - some of them were taken in summer, the other ones in autumn and winter. These uploaded photos of Szczecin show the renovated Pomeranian Dukes' Castle and just a small piece of town. Enjoy (-: Usually I'm spending my holidays over there but that time me & Ania decided to travel just across Europe and visit some countries whose are located at the north and east coast of Baltic Sea - From Finland to Poland and eventually come back to Szczecin. We visited in Bolton Castle because we heard a bit about its interesting history. Famous queen Maria Stuart spent there couple years of her turbulent life. We were being inside and we saw all of chambers including inn, kitchen, armory, blacksmith shop etc. Queen's chamber wasn't so confortable if we consider it according our criteria. Castle is located in very low density area in Yorkshire Dales, sometimes you might miss your mobile phone coverage. ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » Wales » Gwynedd » Harlech June 28th 2009

We haven't seen Harlech castle inside because we got there about 15 minutes too late than we should have got there. Bad luck or just delay cause by extended visit in Gwrych Castle. That castle was build by king Edward I after Wales were conquered by English knights. Afterwards couple of times that castle had significant importance for example during the War of Two Roses king Henry VII escaped to Scotland from this castle. Harlech had been besieged for seven years. Castle is not big - size is 30 by 40 meters, it has four towers and characteristic gate. For me it is typical example of medieval military architecture. Moreover Harlech castle was build in interesting location - on the head of the cliff and very close from highest part of Snowdonia mountains. Landscape is really ... read more

That castle I saw couple of times before I visited there. It looks quite interesting and nice impression enhances by location of Gwrych castle at the top of hill. Castle's walls are white and in general it is stylized to medieval fortress despite of it was build at the beginning of 19th century. The family of founders stopped to reign of castle when the last family member died childless. Afterwards fate of Gwrych castle was various and some owners possessed it. Nowadays I don't know exactly who is an owner but I heard about company that bought the castle and would try to turn into hotel. First impresion is - this is nice medieval castle but after I thought for a few seconds... Welsh have respect for cultural and historical relics and they surely would take ... read more
