For six weeks after returning to the US, I lived with my sister and her family. It was primarily to spend time with my niece and nephew, since up until now, I only got to see them for a few days a year at most. My sister lives outside the DC metro area, so there were plenty of things to keep us occupied. I stayed home everyday with my nephew, who is 5, and who was taken from daycare. His younger sister continued going to daycare, except for about once a week. G (my nephew) and I did all kinds of fun things during the summer, like going to the zoo, museums, movies and on the last day, a water park - where he got to go down his first big water slides, a little slowly ... read more

JFK After my wonderful First Class flight experience, I found myself in JFK, an airport I had previously felt could go either way. Tonight, it went south, fast. Our flight was delayed about 40 minutes, which gave me just over an hour to get my luggage (already checked to Rochester), reload it at baggage check, check in for my flight and get to my gate for the last flight of the night. I was a little nervous after the last time I had to wait for luggage at JFK - same thing. 40 minutes!!!! This gave me a half hour. I loaded everything up myself and tried to find where to check through. When I finally found the Emirates counter, three employees were standing around gabbing and seemed very reluctant to help me. "Oh, well those ... read more

On my flight from Budapest, I asked for an upgrade at check-in. The agent told me there were no upgrades available, but another agent was standing next to her and he saw my California driver's license and apparently he had lived in Venice for a few years. Then he asked where I was flying to and I told him; he had lived in Doha for another three years. So we chatted amiably until I was set to go. I experienced yet again what I am trying to explain about the customer service here. I sat at a bar with a menu for about 10 minutes, closed it and waited. Three different waiters looked at me and not one came to me; finally I asked one guy if I could order food here and he said yes ... read more

I am going to have to start this with a disclaimer. This was the last leg of an almost month-long journey, I got a bad cold from my Croatian friend, and it rained the entire time…. but I was sadly not impressed with Budapest. I know, I really wanted to like it too. Let me just say - the city itself is absolutely beautiful and I loved the architecture. I love the history of Hungary and I made sure that I got my fill of it. But for a city that seems to pride itself on tourism, I felt like the local people themselves resented tourists. They were not mean exactly, just not friendly and often annoyed. But let's go back to the start… We pulled into the train station and I said good bye to ... read more

I have to be a little diplomatic here. I think there is some ongoing animosity between Croatians and Slovenes. When I told my Croatian friends I was going to Slovenia for a couple of days, they rolled their eyes or worse. At dinner in Vis with my friends' friends, one girl had brought her Slovene boyfriend to dinner and she told me that Slovenia is actually quite lovely and gave me recommendations on restaurants. So, I was very curious as to what I would find. When I got let off at the bus station it was about 11pm, so I quickly found a taxi to take to my hotel. It was very quiet and I did not feel quite comfortable wandering around by myself; also, it was noticeably cooler. So I asked the taxi driver if ... read more

We got into Marina Kastela on Saturday afternoon, after detouring once for a quick final swim. At this point, people prepared to go separate ways. First things first - SHOWER. None of us could wait five minutes once we tied up to take a real shower, with hot water, in a big room, without swimsuits (if so desired). Going to a real bathroom. Brushing our teeth. I stood in the shower for a good twenty minutes. It shut off after about 30 seconds, but it was still hot and allowed me to thoroughly wash my hair multiples times, shave, and just clean all the salt, sweat and dirt off my body. After this, Marko prepared to go to his grandmother's for the evening, dropping Fay and Christoff and I at Split. Luka and Ivana were having ... read more

I have to devote an entire blog to my favorite island: Vis! We pulled into Vis town on Tuesday morning. It was going to be a long, fun day. First we docked at a marina and went to shore and walked about a mile to find a place to rent scooters. We got four scooters for the eight of us, with the boys driving. I got to ride with Marko, who had just recently returned from a scooter trip that took him all the way to Spain. Aside from the Vespa in Tuscany, I had never been on a motorized bike thingy. I was a little nervous, but it was so much fun. I was glad I was riding with someone familiar with this as the hills were very windy and there were many cars. Vis ... read more

Europe » Croatia » Dalmatia » Hvar July 24th 2015

Our next destination was Hvar Island, also kind of known as a party island. I'm not much of a partier, but the island definitely had more atmosphere. First we stopped in a cove across from the main island, where there was also a beach lounge called Carpe Diem. At 2am, this "lounge" turns into a rave basically. But it was a beautiful stop, where we could get a nice view of Hvar across the way. There was also a super hot ship captain nearby in a speedo; I am not much for speedos, but Fay and I were drooling. Then we anchored near Hvar and went to shore for dinner. There is a very nice square where most of the action takes place, with many outdoor cafes and restaurants set up, the main clock, and lots ... read more

The drive from Plitvice was longer than I think any of us thought, so we split up with the boys going to get Zoran and Anja from the airport and me riding with Luka, Ivana and Fay. Poor Ivana - we all slept while she drove until the last bit when Luka took over. We didn't get to the marina until about 10:30pm. The reception office was closed by then but we were free to sleep on the boat overnight, so we searched for it, eventually finding it at the end of Pier B. Our home over the next week, Painkiller, is a 46' boat with 8 berths (sleeping quarters). Fay and I shared a room over the week; she got a lot of slack about her oversized suitcase, but she was going to England immediately ... read more

I was so happy to see one of the items on my bucket list. On our way from Zagreb to Split, our friends took us to this beautiful national park with the stepped lakes and waterfalls, crystal clear blue waters, and stunning scenery. I was so excited for this. It is not a direct route, so we had taken the long way through the countryside. Fay and I were able to get to know the 8th member of our party, Marko. He is definitely talkative and the life of the party. He recommended a stop for lunch at this cute little spot near the park, Rastoke, where he said they had the best fish. The fish did not disappoint. I was still full from our brunch, but I tried it - when in Rome, right? Who ... read more
