France was kind of a last minute decision for me as I had planned to hit the German Christmas markets this year. However, I found out my friends were going and despite being extremely nervous about speaking only about 10 words in French, I decided to meet them in Paris! I took Emirates airline, the A380 (not business class this time) and the economy seats were surprisingly comfortable - usually Emirates seats have some weird bar that pushes out your lower backā€¦ I checked in online so was able to get aisle seats and since the line was so long at the baggage drop, I just took my huge backpack on board. I slept pretty well off and on during both flights, though from Doha I was rudely awakened repeatedly by the woman next to me ... read more

Hamad International Airport in Doha, Qatar officially opened for business in late May 2014. While at that point, all commercial flights were then flying from there, there was and still is a lot of work to be done. It has been interesting to note the changes at the airport in the last five months, including the opening of the food court and many shops. I went tonight and there was definitely much more going on. I was actually thinking before I went to the airport, "golly it would be so nice to have a table that is not for food, but in a business area, where I can do my borehole logging." And bam! I saw one on the way to my gate! Like, I wish I were making this up, but it was comical to ... read more

The last day of our trip was to visit areas around KL. First stop: Batu Caves. I skipped breakfast in favor of sleeping in a little and taking a nice long shower. Then we got a taxi ride to KL Sentral Station. This place was huge! This is where you catch all the various train lines, including the KLIA Express Train, which I booked for that evening. We took the Kommuter train to the Batu Caves, last stop on the line and about 7 stations between. The train stops you right at the entrance to the park. When we got off, we went a little to the left, seeing monkeys the whole way. There was a giant statue and an old man collecting two ringetts at the entrance, with a brand new statue of horses and ... read more

Saturday morning we were excited to sleep in a bit.... we were leaving at 9am with our new driver as opposed to 6am which was recommended by our no-show driver. I actually liked our driver, who seemed enthusiastic to talk about his country. Jamie was not impressed. I felt bad for him. We had two other guys in the car - an old Aussie and a young indonesian - we were trying to figure out their relationship.... So, our driver lets us out in Melacca to enjoy the rest of the day, even though it was crazy busy for the Eid festivities. He had wanted to get us lunch, as part of the tour, but Jamie didn't want to deal with him and asked him for our money instead. Man, I really did feel bad for ... read more

For Eid al Adha, I decided to join my friend Jamie while she was traveling southeast Asia for work. Originally, she was going to be in Jakarta and i would join her there, but there was more fun in Kuala Lumpur, where she would be working the following week anyway, so Malaysia it is! I left on Friday morning, hoping that the craziness for the Eid holiday break would be minimal. Parking was easy, and I had already checked in and had only carryon luggage, but the customs line was the longest i'd seen in the new airport. So, I pulled out my handy dandy Fast Track pass, given to me by a coworker and proceeded immediately through. Yes! I sat and the flight was delayed about 20 minutes, but over all the flight was pretty ... read more

The next morning we were able to sleep in and decided to drive to the studios rather than take the buses again. Our first fast pass was at Star Tours. I wondered if the boys would like this as each of them had found things that surprised me to scare them (Pirate makeover, disney characters, tiki birds). With Emry's head barely scraping the height restriction, we all enjoyed the ride! Then we came out and decided to take them to Muppets 3D, something our whole family used to love. G really does not like shows until about halfway through, then he either loves them or hates them. Fortunately, he loved this one. When we came out, it was pouring, pouring rain. The whole exit ramp was packed with people and when it seemed like we would ... read more

The next morning, I woke the boys early and we headed back to the campground to get ready for our first theme park: Magic Kingdom! Once back at the camper, we collected Mom and Dad and went to wait for the boat ride. The boys loved the boat ride (I think it was one of their favorite rides of the day). We got there early, right as they were opening the gates, so there was a gazillion people waiting. One of the changes in the last 15 years? 9/11. Everyone with a bag had to go through security first. But with the magic bands, it was pretty easy to walk through the entrance after. I wore the boys bands on my right hand and mine on the left - the whole trip I was referred to ... read more

I left my friends early the next morning while they left for work. Following their advice, I had planned to visit the Santa Fe College zoo and see some gators, but the drive there was high traffic flow due to classes starting. So, I next decided to try to find the State Geological Park, where there is a giant sinkhole I guess. However, it is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, and with the gate shut, there was little to do. So, I visited Walgreens for some munchies before making my way to Orlando. Since I had time to kill, I took the back road - the land between Gainesville and Ocala is beautiful with Spanish Moss and dozens of horse ranches. After hitting Ocala, I decided to get back on the freeway. Then it was pretty ... read more

Since I worked so hard and so late all week, I decided to splurge a little and got upgraded on my flight from Doha to Amsterdam - it was worth it. Comfy chair, great dinner, nice neighbor, and well deserved rest on my full layout chair. Yay! Plus, when you fly business on KLM, you get these little houses that are models of real houses in Holland and have a history to them; they are supposed to be filled with some kind of Dutch alcohol, but since this was an Arabic flight, none was with it. I still thought it would be a nice gift for my dad's bar. The guy next to me said his wife collects them, so he was picky about which house he got - but he asked the guys in front ... read more

The only thing that has really changed much in the last few months is that we've hired new Project Managers, which means that I have new people to play with. So, life has been a bit more interesting and I don't feel the need to go to Dubai every other week anymore. In fact, I have not been to Dubai in about six weeks, which is very unusual, but for once, I am ok with it. Work, as usual, has been busy with lots of ongoing projects, rig breakdowns, and troublesome clients. I think this is by far the most depressing part of my job: the clients. I have a few amazing clients that talk to me like a professional or a person. But there are some clients who treat me like a dog. I actually ... read more
