"Americans are all fat!" This was the answer Jana Dolezalova, an exchange student, gave to our 12-grade economics teacher when he asked what her first impression of America was. She didn't make a lot of friends that day... And my first impression of Czech, well, it really has nothing to do with the girth of its citizens. However, I'm seeing a lot of pot-bellies when I expected to see leggy models. Hmmm.... At least I know why: Beer. Nowadays, since I don't drink much anymore after living in the Middle East for almost two years, one beer and I'm done. But I've heard incredible things about the various Bohemian beers and judging by the number of pubs, I have my choice. So, I need to make these beers worth it. I won't go into the details ... read more

Saturday, we slept in a little bit then headed down to Abu Dhabi for another fun day. I was just discussing with Jamie regarding activities here. There is a LOT to do in Dubai and this area in general, but it can get expensive. Look at Friday: Burj Khalifa - 125 AED, Lunch - 50 AED, Shopping (!?!?), Cooking class - 300AED, VIP Movie - 100AED. That's one day. However, aside from gas and a minimal park fee, and dinner, Saturday was almost free! Jamie was kind enough to drive us all to Abu Dhabi for the Red Bull Air Race. We thought it started at 2pm, but it turns out that was the start time for Friday; on Saturday, the start time was 4:30. Emirates Palace - Free So, we caught a cab and headed ... read more

To get away from the monotony of work in Qatar, I decided to invite two new Dutch girls to Dubai for a fun weekend of just girls. Melinda is married to one of my engineers, and had visited him while he interned in Dubai about six years ago - things had changed a LOT since then, so it was interesting to see her reaction. Tina had never been to Dubai before, and I'm a little worried because she seems to really like it. Like me like it - so I worry she'll ditch us folk in Qatar... Anyway, I always take the nightly United flight from Doha to Dubai - it is almost never full. But last time and this time it was!!! It took a while to check in, go through security, go through security ... read more

A little more insight into a week in the life of a geologist/engineering/project manager in the middle east. Since this is basically my life week in week out, you can see what I do on a daily basis. Geology! As you can see from the photo, our core boxes are stacking up in the warehouse and that is just a small portion!!! Each box contains approximately 3m of core that has to be logged, photographed, and tested. The field geologist is typically onsite with the field equipment. We have 22 drilling rigs and approximately 10 geologists, the geologists are divided up into various projects, and generally have to cover multiple rigs. The rigs drill between 8 - 15 m per day per rig, and sometimes they can drill a LOT more. The geologists are supposed to ... read more

I'd been looking forward to brunch all week long. In fact, it is the only thing that got me through the week at all. I had a very rough Thursday, with trying to get the one report I really wanted out the door and being unsuccessful. At least I got another done, but it was frustrating. Then I had a mid-afternoon site visit on the complete opposite side of town; this site visit usually takes me about 15 minutes - simply checking the rock/soil conditions beneath the pad excavations to verify they are correct. They always are, but they need a geotechnical engineer to sign off on it. I was planning to head home and finish the report so I could have my assistant compile and send out. Of course, this one time, I was kept ... read more

What can I say? Work runs my life here. There are still many projects ongoing, with minimal staff, particularly since this is the busy holiday season. But I've decided to make the best of the year and not let work get to me as much. I took a nice long weekend to Dubai to "sleep" - yes, I have to leave the country to sleep!!! I had a nice flight into Dubai - purchasing e-gate is the best money I have ever, ever spent. Friday was a day of relaxation and going to the mall. This time, I went to Dubai Mall (my favorite is actually Mall of the Emirates) to do some major shopping. I saw a movie, bought some work clothes, met a friend for tea and crepes, shopped some more, had dinner at ... read more

I was a bit sad to come back from such a beautiful, winter wonderland as Vienna to the desert and work again. But, so many people take this time period off, even in the Middle East, that I had to compensate for co-workers' absences. The good thing is that it is not unique to our company, so the presence of demanding clients was also less. While I was insanely busy, there was a sense of peace and happiness. Even though you have less time to get the work done, there is less of a rushed feeling. The downside to the holidays is that both Christmas and New Year's fell on a Wednesday, so you have to go back to work for one day (Thursday) after the holiday. I guess it is nice to break the week ... read more

Final Observations on Vienna I decided to enjoy my last morning, and yes, I slept in. Work has put me through the ringer and I just wanted to make sure I was not tired on my return journey. I took my time waking up, showering, packing, and strolled up for my last free breakfast. Of course I got more ham to savor before heading back to the middle east. So, nothing much exciting happened on my last day. Instead, I'll leave you with a few photos and some observations. 1. I absolutely, positively could NOT leave without at least glimpsing the Danube River! I don't know why, but as a student of history, especially European history, I would have felt incomplete without at least seeing this historic trade route. I took the U1 to Donauinsel - ... read more

I had been looking forward to the Nutcracker ever since I bought my ticket about two weeks ago. I had decided to splurge a little and get a good seat. You don't pick the individual seat, but a group area. Well, when they sent me my seat number and I looked it up.... my excitement got kicked into high gear. I was in an upper balcony seat, immediately next to the highest price group. I bought a new dress and determined this was my Christmas present to myself. My seat and the ballet did not disappoint. I was worried I would be a little overdressed for the show, but I needn't have worried - there were all types of dress going on there. I stopped on my way to my seat for a glass of wine ... read more

I had originally planned to travel to Bratislava for the morning, but found myself fully enjoying my vacation by lying in bed instead. I had another delicious ham breakfast, then found myself heading toward the Belvedere in the southeast portion of Vienna. There is a Christmas Market there called Weihnachtsmarkt Belvedere and it didn't' disappoint. It is located directly in front of the palace. I got a mug of Baileyspunsch which was pretty strong and strangely, I didn't feel so cold anymore... (The "punsch" is actually hot). I wandered around a bit and found a stall selling christmas ornaments that show Vienna - I figured I would probably return here, but first I got another drink, orangepunsch, and continued wandering. Finally I came back and got the three ornaments for my mom and sisters. I then ... read more
