Sunday 17th October L.A - San Deigo - 125 Miles We got up and booked our hostel in San Diego (pop 2.8million) for the next two nights and managed to get into the international youth hostel which will a fine change from a motel. We drive round the corner from our hotel where we met Mhairi outside the Marriot. We were chuffed to see her so far from our usual stomping ground and we walked to a cafe bar nearby for lunch and a catch up. We had a good time at lunch and it was ace to see her and it felt really strange to begin with since we are in downtown L.A and not up the toon in Aberdeen! We had an ace couple of hours and then it was time to say our ... read more

Sunday night 10th October Las Vegas (pop 1.3 Million) We walk out of the Luxor and onto the street!! As i look up into the sky above i see that we have a ray of light being beamed out the point of our pyramid into the night sky. Looks cool and it will shine the way home if we get lost which i doubt. Only another hundred yards walk and we are standing at the far end of the famous Vegas Strip looking down at the dazzling lights and LED screens that cover the strip. We hauled off to the New York New York hotel and casino and didnt mess around and before we knew it we were jumping straight onto the roller Coaster that dips and curves its way around the hotel roof and casino. ... read more

Thursday 14th October Las vegas (Nevada) to San Francisco (California) - 649 miles San Francisco - Santa Maria - 265 miles Santa Maria - Los Angeles - 175 miles We stopped a few times for fuel and leg stretching and later in the evening we had dinner not far from San fran. We arrived at San Fran 1030pm, hurriedly checked into a hotlel and made our way to the nightclub called the Fillmore which was an old historic listed building with chandeliers and everything was in a victorian style. We enjoyed the night but wondered if it was worth driving all that way for two hours of music. As we were leaving the club we seen DJ Paul Oakenfold coming out the back door and he chatted away to us quite the thing. We told him ... read more

Sunday 10th Ocotber Flagstaff (Arizona) - Las Vegas (Nevada) - 255 miles. We left Flagstaff (pop59,900) and drove along parts of Route 66 on our way to the main freeway that took us up through Arizona and into the Nevada desert. On the way to Vegas we stopped at Hoover Dam which is just inside Arizona State on one side and as we passed over the other side we entered Nevada State. It was really busy with traffic as they are still completing the new flyover bridge which has been built to stop congestion here. Also it didn't help with the security checks on each vehicle before crossing the Dam. We were held up on the highway at 25mph for about twenty miles as the scale of the bypass construction and bridge is astronomical!! Hoover Dam, ... read more

Saturday 9th October Grand Junction (Colorado) - Flagstaff (Arizona) - 436 miles. We stayed over in a Motel 6 again and they are cheap and cheerful and only 35 quid for the room which is good considering they are clean and the showers are great plus it cost us 3 pounds to do our laundry!!! Clean socks and pants for another ten days!!! wooohooo!!! We managed to avoid the traffic this morning and took off In a southerly direction through Colorado, skimming Utah again!!! then into Arizona. I dont know why but the route we've taken has got us crossing the Utah state line again before heading into Arizona. Ive checked the map and yeh we seem to have driven down the Utah state line almost. Neverheed we carrried on down the road a little and ... read more

Friday 8th October Yellowstone (Wyoming) - through Utah to Grand Junction (Colorado) - 524 miles We checked out the hotel and did a quick stop at the post office here to buy stamps for postcards. I asked for stamps at the counter and the elderly gentleman goes 'ah, scottish' yes i replied, before i could say anything else he says ' i bet you are from somewhere between Aberdeen and Inverness'. Aye i was speechless, turns out he had friends from Banchory and placed my accent easily. A nice start to the day i guess. Well ten miles south out of Yellowstone the inevitable happened.....Snow!!!! We drove through a blizzard for about another ten miles and then it stopped as quick as it started leaving a slight covering on the hills and roadside before us. Its ... read more

Thursday 7th October Well it was an ok sleep but we were awoken early by a rush of people by our window that were heading for the old Faithful Geyser which is only about 100 meters from our room. The old Faithful erupts every 90 minutes (give or take 10 minutes) and its a spectacular sight. We had just missed it by minutes last night although we did see it from afar and wondered what it was as we approached the Inn. We are located right in the middle of the Upper Geyser basin so we decide to doa tour of this area and time it right so we arrive back at old Faithful to see the eruption of water as promised at 1050am. We will walk to the furthest point away from old Faithful and ... read more

Wednesday 6th October Well we didn't meet a grisly death through the night so we packed up our stuff and got going again as we were going to be driving round the grand loop road which would eventually lead us to the Old Faithful Inn. The grand loop road is about 80 miles in total and circles around the national park with lots of interesting stops ranging from hot springs, geysers and waterfalls. We obviously wouldn't manage all of the sights but we're going to at least do the top locations as described in our handbook. We drove through the lovely Blacktail Deer Plateau and stopped at a viewpoint and across the road we could see more Bison's roaming free. Just a short distance from here is the Petrified Tree which is a fossilized tree from ... read more

Monday 4th October San Fran to Reno = 220 miles. California into Nevada State. Reno to Salt Lake = 520 miles. Nevada into Utah State. Went for breakfast at Denny's in Reno & both had a grand slam breakfast then hit the road. The first few hours were quite average freeway driving. We passed a sign on the road which said "You are now entering Mountain time", we wondered if this was a time line but hopefully we'll find out later on. We arrived at the salt lake plains which were absolutely breathtaking. It is easy to understand why they hold the world record land speed records here because not only is it flat but the salt plains can be seen for miles in all directions. Half an hour into driving the salt plains we ... read more

Friday 1st October l We arrived into San Francisco international airport late last night and stAyed at an airport hotel not to far from the arrival terminal. In the morning we caught the B.A.R.T train into Powell Street which is in the centre of San Fran (pop 3,000,000). The hostel was only a couple of hundred yards away on Mason Street from the station so we quickly dumped the bags and took a walk uphill to the top of Mason Street till we arrived at Lombard street where the famous crooked street is. A few photos later we then moved on to Fisherman's wharf which was another mile walk downhill through the beautiful streets of San Francisco. San Fran has a very cosy feel about it and is very clean for a large city. When ... read more
