Friday 24th December Brisbane (pop 1.8 million people) is capital and most populous city in the Australian state of Queensland and the third most populous city in Australia. Brisbane is named after the river on which it sits which, in turn, was named after Sir Thomas Brisbane, the Governor of New South Wales from 1821 to 1825. Once we've booked ourselves in we headed for the local supermarket where we bought food supplies for our Xmas day dinner. I promised I'd cook a proper Christmas dinner for Jill and judging by our mood we're in dire need of something chrismassy! At least we still have our santa hats from thw whitsundays! We did a quick stop at the bottle shop on the way home for a bottle of Cava for our Buck Fizz treat for xmas ... read more

Tuesday 21st December Its only about two hours back up North to the Gold Coast and we are looking forward to visiting the nice beaches of Surfers Paradise. We've arrived at an area at Gold Caost called Southport which is about 5 km outside Surfers Paradise which is perfect as the main town area of Surfers isnt that great as its mainly shops and food halls and actually looks and feels like Tenerife! We'll take a day visit into town later on the week if we are bored. We checked in and get our beachwear on as the weather is terrific and we must make the most of the sun while its out as the weather forecast is pretty poor for the next three or four days. We have a private room to ourselves which is ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Byron Bay December 28th 2010

Friday 18th December You'll be glad to find this a short blog by my standards. Due to bad weather and a slow down in activities there's not much to write about for the next week or so. Never mind heres a wee read up on what we did on our way to visit Byron Bay. We left Rainbow beach and travelled south towards Brisbane via Noosa where Fabrizio and Anna would be leaving us. We hope to meet up with them later on in the year and we'll miss them that's for sure. The weathers utter crap and its on the radio that most of Queensland is flooding and its the wettest end to spring since records began. Lucky us! After Noosa we travelled on Southwards passing Gold Coast and Surfers Paradise on the way down ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Fraser Island December 21st 2010

Sunday 12th December It's off the bus 9am and a 20 metres walk into the Fraser backpackers hostel. Thank god that the hostel is close by as we are stiff with sleeping on the bus. Once checked in we are instructed to be at the bar for 2pm for our induction and registration for the Fraser Island tour which departs tomorrow. Our dorm has 6 bunk beds and there's only top ones left so without any hesitation we're up and zonked out for a few hours. At 2pm we meet at the bar to go over our insurance details, license documents and are split into 4 groups for the tour. We watched a half hour video on safety issues and legal matters involving Fraser islands protocols as there have been accidents in the past and now ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Airlie Beach December 11th 2010

Saturday 4th December We wasted no time on leaving the X base hostel and hopped aboard the ferry back to Townsville in order to catch our connecting bus which leaves for Airlie Beach. Its only a 3 hour drive to Airlie Beach and we arrived mid afternoon with the sun bearing down on us again and its a short walk to the Airlie Waterfront Hostel where we promptly check ourselves in for a couple of nights. Airlie Beach is a small thriving town in the Whitsunday Region of Queensland. pop 2,770. There is a main road with most of the bars and clubs on it with lots of residential houses sprawled across the overlooking hillside. The Airlie Waterfront is and excellent Hostel which has recently been refurbished so we waste no time in unpacking and doing ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Magnetic Island December 10th 2010

Thursday 2nd December We left Scotty's Hostel on a free shuttle bus to the greyhound bus stop where we waited a short while for the greyhound that would take us three hours to reach Townsville, our next stop. The journey was uneventful and we arrived at Townsville. The bus stop is directly outside the ferry terminal where we would catch our water taxi across Cleveland Bay to Magnetic Island which is a bonus, no mucking around with bags. Magnetic Island is only 12km from the mainland and its a short thirty five minute ferry across the lovely Coral Sea into the ferry port at Nelly Bay. This 20.1 sq mi mountainous island in Cleveland Bay has effectively become a suburb of Townsville, with 2,110 permanent residents. Judging by the house prices, its an exclusive island to ... read more

Tuesday 30th November While i was sleeping on this fine and peaceful morning Jill had got up early and changed our Skydive from tomorrow too today. So my wake up call sounds a bit like ' Leon, wake up, we're skydiving in a hours time!' Great! I thought. It dawned on me that its best its been forced upon us a day early as i would not have slept so well last night had i kinow i was jumping out a plane today. We had breakfast and a bus came and picked us up and took us around to the Mission Sky dive centre which was only a hlaf mile down the beach from Scottys hostel. Its a bloody gorgeous day by the way, at least 35oC and not a cloud in sight, perfect for skydiving. ... read more

Sunday 28th November We enjoyed our long lie in and once we got ourselves together we hailed a taxi and headed for the airport to catch our scenic flight tour plane. We arrived about a hour early so we sunbathed out the front of the building as it was scorching hot again. Our pilot arrived and took our details and informed us that our 30 minute flight was being upgraded free of charge as our other 4 passengers have booked on for the hour. Since there's only one pilot on today they are putting us all up together. Obviously we don't complain. After a quick demo on the safety issues we walk out to our plane which is a 46 year old bucket with wings. Its all good as we board the plane with Jill up ... read more

Saturday 27th November Our new room is much better and we got a decent sleep with the aircon left on but there’s no happy medium for me as I grabbed an extra blanket as I started shivering during the night. Aye im a moaning git. We are picked up after a mishap as our bus drove past us and I had to phone the company to come back and get us. No worries as we are soon on our way past Redlynch and onto Freshwater village for our skyrail trip. Spanning 7.5 km over Barron Gorge National Park, the Skyrail experience includes a scenic cableway ride and stops at two rainforest mid-stations. Our first phase of the skyrail took us 2km up the Macalister Range into the Rainforest in Barron Gorge National Park. As we rose ... read more

Wednesday 24th November After being picked up at 4.05 and driven to the airport we were a little worse for wear as neither of us got much sleep. The thought of the 3 hour flight to Brisbane followed by another 2 hour flight to Cairns doesnt seem to bother us now that we are seasoned travellers!! The flights were uneventful and as we stepped off the plane in Cairns the sudden thump of humidity hit us like a sledgehammer. Yip, we are in the middle of rainforest territory allright. By the time the bags come off baggage we are peeling off jackets and tops and gasping for water. Jill sorts out the free shuttle to our hostel and we arrive down on the esplanade in no time at all. We stupidly picked any hostel we could ... read more
