San Ignacio Friday 3rd September We caught the red eye water taxi at 6.30 am which took directly to Belize city in about 45 minutes. Once there we said our goodbyes to Nat and Hannah. We will miss them but we promised to keep in touch. Belize city is a bit dirty and doesnt look like fun at all. Our tour company had arranged for us to pick up our tickets at a deli at the bus station but when we arrived to obtain the tickets the guy there was a bit off with us as we hadnt any paper work and said the rules had changed. basically he wanted us to get a bus to the border of guatlamala to obtain immigration passes to stay here. So after a hour of fannying about i managed ... read more

Sunday 29th August We passed through Bacalar Lagoon and Chetumal and our decision to miss them out was a wise one as these two towns are a bit run down. dont get me wrong we could stay here but caye caulker sounds more appealing and we just want to have a good long stay in one location. So we arrive at the ferry port in Chetumal and once we got passed the sniffer dogs and military security we were on our way across chetumal bay in a really quick water taxi. There were about 30 of us on this 25 ft boat which had three 250hp outboard motors. Most of the passengers were people that lived on the islands. we were told they use the boat to go to the larger supermarkets on the mainland to ... read more

Thursday 26th August Well, we missed the bus. shock horror. still a bit slow from last night. No worries, it cost us 5 pounds each to get to our next destination. 2 hour bus journey. Tulum is situated on the carribean coast of Mexico and boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in this area. We hailed a taxi and arrived at the Playa Azul hotel which is situated in the si'an kaan biosphere reserve. Most of this area is protected and they are big on eco friendly pratices such as preservation of local species and plants. Most buildings are called cabanas which are traditional wooden shacks with limestone walls and are built using non contaminants, plastics or concrete. This place is absaloutly beautiful. It has that carribean feel to it and our cabana has a ... read more

Monday 23rd August We left miami quite reluctantly as there was an all night party under our room so we've not had much sleep. Our flight was cancelled and our tour operator didnt notify us of this. Neverheed the rescheduled flight was four hours later than original so at worse we were wandering around aimlessly for four hours more than we usually do. Its a great feeling looking out the departure lounge seeing thunder and lighting across the airport and beyond..cant wait for this flight 2 hours on 1/4 full plane which was a bonus as we had 3 seats each. time to catch up on lost sleep. Touchdown and its starting to feel more and more like an adventure rather than holiday. Immigration control was extremely busy as there was 2 uk flights landing at ... read more

we started our malaria tablets yesterday...feeling a bit dodgy. We bussed it to washington dulles airport to catch a plane to miami, this is our first internal flight outwith our round the world ticket. No messing about at airport as security is pretty hardcore here.. we were practically naked going through security and jill got her cooling spray taken off her that was in bottom of her bag. Yip, the same bag we had with us yesterday while we were getting burnt to death, if only we looked. ah well, you live and learn. 2 hours later and as we fly in to land we could see the south beach and many boats sailing about in the water. looks lush!! a 30 minute drive in a shuttle bus through heavy traffic. all i can think of ... read more

Wednesday 18th August We took a 1 1/2 hour train to Washington DC and arrived about lunchtime. The train station on arrival gave us a taste of what was to come. Large marble historical buildings with plenty of greenery. No mucking about we checked into the international hostel which is set on 7 floors of an old building not far from most of the central attractions. The weather was wet and cloudy but the temperature was about 20c. 20% of Washington is parkland so the trees gave us good cover for parts of the day as it rained on and off. First stop, the smithsonian museums. The natural museum of history was huge! lots to see and was interesting in parts and we managed to see the hope diamond which is the largest diamond in the ... read more

Thursday 12th august- What a start to the day....we were upgraded on our flights to traveller plus. sitting right behind business class and with the staff bay infront of us which meant heaps more leg room, i.e we could put our feet up and almost lie flat. lovely jubbly! The flight passed quick but we came back down to earth with a bump as our bags didnt make the connection at Terminal 5. We were promised the bags back by 5pm. 2 airtrains and one subway train later we arrived at broadway on 35th. our hostel was on 31st so we spent the half an hour looking for the hostel whilst pinching ourselves that we were actually here. The hostel is lovely and better than we expected as they have just newly refurbished the place and ... read more
