Wednesday 2nd February We've somehow managed to end up on the back of a pick up truck taxi and sharing with 8 other people. We are assured we are heading for Haad Yao. Its looking like a really nice island as we meander through some steep roads and pass through little villages dotted along our route. We drop some people off and after the last couple got off we were left with just the two of us heading north towards Haad yao. We arrived at the Haad Yao Bay View Resort and after negotiating our rates for the next few nights we were shown to our room which was very nice indeed as it was larger than we're used to and we had four windows looking out towards the hills. We've decided to hire a couple ... read more

Sunday 30th January Ko Samui Airport is a private airport originally built by Bangkok Airways, which is still the main operator with two flights daily from Phuket as well as Bangkok and various other Thai cities. We've landed and we're picked up in a minibus laid on by the World Resort hotel which is located on the North of the island on Bo Phut beach. Ko Samui is located in the Gulf of Thailand and measures some 21 kilometres at its narrowest point, and 25 km at its longest. It is Thailand's second largest island with a permanent population of approximately 55,000. The old capital is Nathon, on the southwest coast of the island. The central part of the island is an almost uninhabitable mountain jungle, Khao Pom, peaking at 635 m. The various lowland areas ... read more

Tuesday 25th January It took 60 minutes of flying time to Phuket from KL and then another 40 minutes to reach the ferry port on the South coast where we boarded a rather rugged looking boat. The boat journey takes roughly 2 hours and its great to be sitting up on deck admiring the small islands popping up on the horizon. We approach Koh Phi Phi where we start to see the towering cliffs of Phi Phi Leh island and only a few miles from here we begin to see the characteristic Ton Sai bay. There is a large modern deep water Government Pier on Tonsai Bay, Phi Phi Don Village completed late 2009. Almost immediately we are asked for a 20 baht 'Clean up Phi Phi' fee which is only 50p and soon we're walking ... read more

Wednesday 19th January Our last day in bangkok is shaping up to be a good one. An early pick up from the hostel followed by a trip to nearby China Town where we picked up more passengers. Another stop and another few people and its not long before we are leaving the city in the 12 seater minibus. Our journey takes us about 100km West towards Amphoe Damnoen Saduak which is a floating market around the town of Damnoen. The central town is most famous because of its floating market held every day till noon on a khlong (canal). However as it has become a prime tourist attraction of the Bangkok vicinity the market has lost its authenticity. Our guide leads us off the bus and onto a waiting long tail boat which takes us in ... read more

Sunday 23rd January Not a good start to the day at all. At 6am we walked a long way to the train station only to find it closed and not open until 7am. Our flights at 0740 so we're standing there with our last $20 Singaporean wondering if a taxi would cost that much to get us to the airport. We waved lots of taxis down but no one would stop for us as they seem more interested in picking up Indians coming out of mosques and churches after their early Sunday prayers! We eventually got a taxi and made it to the airport with plenty time to spare. We rushed through departures and boarded our plane for the one hour flight up too Kuala Lumpar. We're up in the air and down again without much ... read more

Friday 21st January Needless to say we slelpt most of the way down to Singnapore which took a mere 3 hours courtesy of AirAsia. The flights were a resonable price at $60 each and we didnt fancy the 16 hour bus journey on little bit. Once the baggage was picked up we made our way onto the free skyrail which took us to the MRT railway where we paid about a pound each for the train ride into the Town Hall stop. We then changed train, paid another pound for a short journey up to Little India where our hostel the Inncrowd Hostel. As we left the train we noticed that we could deposit our used train tickets and we reiceved half our money back! Mega cheap trains here then! On arrival at Little India we ... read more

Sunday 16th January Flying from Alice springs to Sydney and then from Sydney to Bangkok took around 12 hours flying time. The Quantas flight from Sydney to Bangkok was a treat as we were pampered with free drink and the food was actually above average. Touchdown Bangkok!. It all goes smoothly through visa control and we hailed a taxi outside which was to cost us about 450 bahts (£9) for the 45 minute journey to our digs. The taxi driver drove like a blooming lunatic and was touching 100mph in places whilst weaving from lane to lane and we feared for our lives! We couldnt get out the taxi quick enough when we arrived at the Lub D hostel and we checked into our room with faces distorted from G force! The Lub D (sleep well) ... read more

Monday 10th January We've arrived at Alice springs! Once our bags were taken off the train we headed to our shuttle bus that then took us to the Alice Springs Lodge hostel. Its baking hot by the way!! We reckon about 36oC and upwards, its almost unbearable standing for too long exposed to the sunshine. We were warned! When we arrived at our hostel all the dorms are fully booked and we get our reservation upgraed to a twin room for the price of the dorm. Its a blessing in disguise as we have our own fridge and two air con units in the room. The usual unpacking of bags before showering followed and we then set off together into the town of Alice Springs fully covered from head to toe with factor 30 sunblock! Alice ... read more

Tuesday 4th January Well hopefully I can keep this installment of the blog short and sweet after the rather long Sydney episode! We have travelled for two days from Sydney to Melbourne. We had a over night stop in Canberra where we did nothing apart from being overcharged by a Pakistani Taxi driver who drove us the long way around to our hostel. We only knew this when we got our taxi back in the morning which took half the time and four streets less. So we arrive Melbourne after an all day monster bus journey and then walked about a mile to our hostel which wasn't ideal at 11pm but we fired on. Our accommodation The Vic Halls is in the CBD of Melbourne city. We feared the worse as we approached the entrance to ... read more

Tuesday 28th December Ah.....Sunny Sydney..sun sun sun!! We couldn't get out the airport quick enough and headed for the Skytrain into town. We quickly made our way to Kent Road which is near Darling harbour by using two trains via the underground and shortly arrived at our appartment which will be our home for the next five days! The Napoleon on Kent are serviced appartments which are perfectly located near the harbour and also the town centre which is great for us as we can plan our new years celebrations and sightseeing tours without worrying about travelling great distances. Our friends John and Kat from Glasgow are coming to stay with us on Thrusday for a few days so we are looking forward to seeing them again as it seems like ages ago we met in ... read more
