Jeff disagrees, but if I could only go back to one place we’ve been this trip, it would be Jasper National Park. If truth be told, I’m trying to figure out how we can back here sooner rather than later, like August. Jasper is stunningly, consistently beautiful. We could have stopped every half mile to take photos. We had absolutely perfect weather—blue skies, occasional clouds. There weren’t even that many people. I loved that the viewpoints have signs that name the mountain, the height, and point directly to it. We got out to see Athabasca Falls. It certainly is not the highest or widest we’ve seen, but it comes through a very narrow channel and is thus impressive. I loved how many glaciers we could see from Icefields Parkway. Banff is a continuation of the views, ... read more

Today was another driving day. The scenery was pretty, but not exceptional compared to what we’ve seen this trip. We did see a cute little fox early on who almost escaped a photo. We also met an adorable dog at a wayside rest who we could have easily brought with us. Sadie wouldn’t have liked it, though, if we had left her for over 3 weeks and come home with another. His owner was also at the rest and may have noticed if his dog was suddenly gone. We are spending the night at Hinton/Jasper KOA, which has impressed all of us. Our site is huge in comparison to many we’ve been in recently. Actually, I think the only site we’ve ever stayed in that is bigger is at Kozy Oaks, only because we’re out at ... read more

After staying at a rest stop last night, we took a short drive from just west of Ft St John down to Chetwynd. Along the way, we stopped at the WAC Bennett and Peace River Dams, both with visitor centers. After arriving, we drove around town just a bit to see their carvings. Chetwynd, of course, is the chainsaw carving capital of the world, and has some very impressive carvings. I think the boys appreciated being in early. We had lunch from KFC (bad choice, by the way—no gravy for the potatoes, no biscuits, green cole slaw) and the boys played the rest of the afternoon, at least when they weren’t yelling at each other or whining at us. Conversation of the Day (as overheard from the boys’ room): L: We’re also going to the local ... read more

We planned today as a crazy long drive so that tomorrow would be very light. It didn’t exactly work out that way, though. We again got a late start, and started seeing wildlife. First, we saw a black bear being lazy on our left. (We didn’t stop for pictures.) We then saw bison on the right. (We didn’t slow down for pictures.) Jeff then saw a brown bear on the left, something we hadn’t yet seen. We drove ahead just a little bit to find a place to turn around, did so, took a few pictures, drove back toward Watson City to find a place to turn around, and finally headed back in the correct direction. We then saw more bison, horses, and then another new species—Stone sheep. There were a couple groups and we took ... read more

Today was again a drive day, as most of the rest of our trip will be. I am very glad to be done with the frost heaves between Delta Junction and Whitehorse. Very, very glad. Tonight we stopped at Campground Services in Watson City, YK, the one with all the signs. We called to see if they had availability, and she told us to go to site 93 if we didn’t make it before their office closed. We didn’t, but there was already someone in 93, so we drove around trying to figure out where to park. A nice elderly guy from North Carolina helped point us to a reasonable site. He and his wife and dog left May 21, are still on their way out to Alaska, and hope to make it home in time ... read more

We decided against driving to the Arctic Circle, which is a good thing considering we didn’t wake up until 9. Instead, we dallied and started the drive home. We stopped at a few waysides to take photos, getting nothing terribly spectacular. We also stopped at Rika’s Roadhouse near Delta Junction for a quick walk around and lunch. (Their tomato basil bisque was pretty good, as was their turtle cheesecake. Liam and I are suckers for cheesecake.) We also stopped in Delta Junction at the end of the highway sign. We hadn’t taken a good picture of the four of us in Alaska and this was really the last opportunity. I may use one by the giant mosquito instead, though. I had forgotten just how bad big portions of the highway are. Since we haven’t seen much ... read more

We left Denali this morning under a complete downpour, and were so glad we saw the park when we did. Fortunately, the rain didn’t last a long time, and the drive to Fairbanks wasn’t very long at all. Our first stop was Museum of the North on the campus of UAF. There were two main exhibits—a natural history portion and an art museum. Liam was very impressed that there were things in the first that he was allowed to touch—mammoth bones, small animal skulls, furs. There were many intricate native carvings. Upstairs, some of the art was traditional, but much of it was native—beadwork, masks, etcetera. There was a huge outhouse covered in license plates and a variety of other pieces. There was also a room called “The Place Where You Listen”, which translates the motion, ... read more

Our big adventure today was the shuttle bus in Denali. Again, our boys were the only children aboard, but seemed to do well. Two couples travelling from Arizona told me that they saw our kids and hoped they wouldn’t be on the same bus, but were entertained nonetheless. The mechanics are on strike here, and are picketing with signs that say “Is your bus safe?” Not 20 minutes into our trip, our driver started hitting things on the bus and opening panels. We eventually spent 30 minutes sitting around waiting for a replacement bus, because the fan clutch was going and would eventually have caused the bus to break down. Fortunately, the rest of the trip was uneventful. There are five animals many people hope to see in Denali National Park—bears, moose, caribou, Dall sheep and ... read more

Sorry it’s been a couple days. Our last campground offered wi-fi, but at a price. At this point in our trip, we’re pretty much not willing to pay for anything extra. I’ll be adding those blogs after I put this one in. Today was another driving day. We retraced our drive from two days ago and were fortunate to see Turnagain Arm at higher tide. It was again very hazy/smoky, so we still didn’t see much. We didn’t see any Dall sheep, either. At Anchorage, we transferred onto Parks Highway, which Milepost’s describes as running “through some of the grandest scenery that Alaska has to offer.” For many, many miles, we were confused. Really, it didn’t look any different than northern Minnesota, aside from wider shoulders. Once we neared Denali though, the views improved. The haze ... read more

Our only scheduled event for today was a cruise through Resurrection Bay and Kenai Fjords National Park. It didn’t leave until 11:45, so we had the laziest morning of our vacation. The boys slept in; we had French toast for breakfast. While Jeff was cooking, I was just hanging out on the beach watching the bay. There was a single bald eagle fairly close in front of me and a couple further down, so I was mostly paying attention to them, until a guy walking on the beach pointed out the whale. Cool! A whale from our campsite! I watched them (yes, two) for awhile before they got too far away. Our tour was through Major Marine Tours on the Kenai Star. We took off at 11:45 for a 7½ hour tour. Liam’s day started out ... read more
