After planning for months and officially counting down for 7 weeks, we’re finally on our way. Work went well and I got out 55 minutes early, letting us get underway at 1650 instead of 1800 when the countdown expired. Our goal was to get 200 of the 800 miles to Regina today. Lisa Hardesty wanted all the inane details, so: we stopped at McDonald’s before leaving St Peter. Liam had a hamburger Happy Meal with apple dippers and chocolate milk, while Cole had a chicken McNuggets Happy Meal with fries and chocolate milk. I had a hamburger Happy Meal with fries and white milk; Jeff had chicken selects with honey mustard sauce, fries and pop. Jeff and I each had an apple pie. The Happy Meal toys are from the new Ice Age movie. We stopped ... read more

My goal for the weekend was to walk most of the trails, and so we took off for Hidden Lake Trail (a round trip of 2 1/2 - 3 miles). It was hillier terrain than the others had been, so it was probably good we did this last and by itself. Surprisingly, you can't see Hidden Lake from the Hidden Lake Trail, but only from a tiny portion of Maple-Basswood Trail.... read more

Today was an absolutely beautiful day. Not too warm. A little breezy. Great for walking. The Neumans actually do geocaching and have a good GPS, so our first adventure was to find the park's geocache. They had a brochure and Sam had prepared, so we headed off for a walk along the Maple-Basswood Interpretive Trail to follow the clues. It worked well and the boys had fun, but it wasn't the critter cache that we had been looking for. Our boys were worn out, so after finding the first clue for the critter cache, we all went back for lunch. That afternoon, I decided to head off for a trip along the Forestry and Prairie Pothole Trails. Really, the weather was perfect. I wished I had our better camera, though, because a couple birds kept flying ... read more

From August 2004 through June 2008, Jeff and I challenged each other to a bocce battle in Minnesota's state parks, as a way to see them all. He kicked my butt, to put it mildly. It was great to see all the parks, but for many, our visits were brief. Lake Carlos was the third of four state parks we saw 21 May 2008 and we were there less than an hour. Jeff won 22-7, not one of my better performances. So, when planning a camping weekend with friends, we picked Lake Carlos and planned to actually see the park. The four of us headed out after breakfast to do the Wetland Overlook and Long Prairie River Trails. The boys did reasonably well, but were slowing before we even got to the second trail. I wanted ... read more

Our primary reason for coming to Chicago was the Field Museum's Real Pirates exhibition. Liam loves pirates and will have a birthday party to match next month, so we figured he'd love it. He did seem to enjoy it, but it wasn't exactly what I was expecting. It was the tale of the Whydah, a slave ship before it was captured by Captain Sam Bellamy and his crew. It sank off the coast of Cape Cod and wasn't rediscovered until 300 years later. Liam's favorite part of the exhibit was hoisting the Jolly Roger. (We have friends named Molly & Roger and Jeff always thinks of pirates.) We had never been to the Field Museum before. It's a classic natural history museum and old enough to have that retro feel, at least in some exhibits. Plants ... read more

Jeff & I decided to add a zoo to our itinerary while here in Chicago because we haven't been to one in ages. I wasn't sure whether to do Lincoln Park or Brookfield, but figured out that Brookfield=Minnesota Zoo and Lincoln Park=Como Park. We like Como Park, but it doesn't take long at all and there's not a lot to see. So to Brookfield it was. We got there earlier than expected and so had to wait for the gates to open. The first employee there to open them couldn't figure out how and had to go get a second employee. Fortunately, that was the biggest gaffe of the day. I hadn't counted on 100 different school groups being there, but it was a big enough park to be okay. There are some areas under construction ... read more

Our first camping trip of the year was to Minneopa State Park in Mankato. It was our third trip there, second camping. As many of you know, Jeff kicked my butt in our bocce battle. In our first visit to Minneopa, he decided Lorrin would play with me (for the disadvantage to me in having two people), but Lorrin and I won. Ha! Anyway . . . I had a short weekend, so we decided to camp out Friday and Saturday. We set up in a downpour and didn't bother to turn on the furnace. It wasn't so bad Saturday morning (at 42o), but was worse Sunday morning (38o) which explained Liam climbing into bed with us at 2am. It's been wet enough recently that the falls were perfect. The boys and Sadie enjoyed our walk ... read more

As many of you know, we are planning a 3 week road trip to Alaska this summer. Jeff wanted me to post this countdown weeks ago, but I refused on the basis of our other vacation. So, here it is. Barring any international travel restrictions, we will be leaving in: ... read more

We are not hikers, both because we are not in particularly great shape and because we have two small boys. In general, that’s fine. However, some national parks are designed mostly for hikers. Take Guadalupe Mountains National Park, for example. The highway skirts the southeast edge. I was initially tempted to have us walk along a few paths, but we’re ready to leave the southwest, so we stopped at a few places for photos and called it good. I had also planned to have us spend an evening in El Paso to go to a few local museums and probably the zoo, but it’s a little close to Mexico right now. We did need to cross off Chamizal National Memorial, though, so we drove Hwy 62/180 into town, stayed 20 minutes at the park (long enough ... read more

Our primary destination for today was Carlsbad Caverns National Park in southeastern New Mexico. It’s on our list (National Park Service parks, monuments and memorials), we’ve never been and, of course, it was supposed to be really interesting. We decided to do both the Natural Entrance and Big Room self-guided tours. The boys were, aside from an occasional brief melt-down by Cole, phenomenal. A NPS ranger was very impressed that both boys were still looking energetic near the end of the tour. They had fun; we had fun and many of the photos turned out, too. Have I ever mentioned how much I love our new camera? Liam tells me that his favorite part of the cave was the popcorn on the ceiling and the lion’s tail. His other favorite part was the bat cave. He ... read more
