Language is a very very small form of culture shock. When going to a place like Hungary, one might expect the language to be different. Most people speak a bit of English, so communicating in Hunglish in shops and restaurants is easy to do. I'm still trying to pick up on Hungarian, but wow is it a hard language. While those short conversations are easy to communicate, it becomes a bit of a problem when you try to talk about your job, contract, and housing and no one can seem to understand you. Culture shock is expected, but it is still quite shocking. In these past two days, all at once, I have felt shocked, overwhelmed, and stressed. It has made me realize just how foreign this country is to me. That's the preface. Here's the ... read more

Oh boy. Let me start with yesterday I guess. We woke up at 9 am to enjoy a free day of exploring the city. We got a nice simple breakfast of granola and muesli in the hostel kitchen, and then made plans. Some girls had bought tickets for a Hop On Hop Off tour that cost about $20 and shows you all of Budapest. My roommates and I decided to do a day of being tourists, but as of yesterday morning, I still had no forints. My friend Kate and I (there are 2 other Kate's here) walked down to the bank and successfully got forints out of the bank! Armed with 75,000 HUF in my pocket (it's 225 HUF to $1 here, so 1000 HUF is about $4), I walked back to the hostel and ... read more

I'm here! I made it! I'm alive, Mom! My flights were super uneventful, so I'll skip over those. We took off, flew a lot, landed, blah blah blah. On the flight to Hungary, I was super nervous about customs, because I have a work permit, but I don't have a visa. I didn't know whether to declare myself here for work or tourism. This was the reality of customs: get in line, give man passport, man stamps passport, get luggage, walk through empty 'nothing to declare' room, you're in Hungary!! I met Hajni with her CETP sign, and went from there. The reality of my trip really only hit me at the end of my second flight as we were flying over all of this beautiful farmland. It was the best. I met up with 3 ... read more

Hi, people still potentially following me! I just got AMAZING news today. I'm about to embark on my newest adventure!! Since I came back from Africa I've attended the University of Colorado at Boulder and am in the process of student teaching in a fifth grade classroom. I will get my Colorado K-6 teaching license this summer. I wanted to take a year off after college (like I did after high school), but I wanted to see if I could make some money doing it. I researched a bunch of stuff online and found this great program called the Central European Teaching Program (CETP). After an EXTENSIVE application process, I skyped with the head of the program to choose schools last night! She told me that I would be making a Hungarian teacher's salary as a ... read more

so this isn't a new place i traveled to. nothing about this is new. this entry is about the end of a chapter of my life. for 11 years i have gone to Camp Calumet Lutheran for boys and girls in Freedom, NH. i've been a camper, a trainee, and a counselor. camp is a place that has changed my life and has meant more to me than any country in the world ever could. i left on saturday and won't be returning next summer. i don't know how i can put my eleven years of experience into words, but i'm going to try here. camp is love. camp is a place where i found myself. where i learned it was okay to act like a child (in fact, it's encouraged). camp is a place of ... read more

Remember my last entry? I did the same thing with Grade 5 today. So i have 9 more letters to share with you guys. Same edits, same deal as last time. Here goes: Topic: Explain the customs and traditions of The Gambia to someone who has never been to The Gambia. The costoms (costumes) in The Gambia are nice, like the traditional dresses. Some of the traditional dresses are made out of different things and the traditional dresses are used by some of the ethnic groups in The Gambia. When you are from another country, you can choose the kind of dress you will like to wear, But their (there) are rules in The Gambia, like when you are a lady you should not wear short clothes walking on the street. You can wear short clothes ... read more

i've hand-written 10 pages of my 12-page paper, so i feel comfortable using this time to add this entry. (kate's not procrastinating? what?) i started a new project. which reminds me...how's everyone coming with those SCHOOL SUPPLIES? i taught grade 6 yesterday afternoon...4 boys and one girl. i showed them my passport and taught them the star-spangled banner. then we did verbal for all of 15 minutes. then i gave them each a piece of paper and a topic to write about. this will give you an understanding of how they speak and write here, and why sometimes i feel a language barrier between my english and gambian english. my edits are in parentheses for clarification purposes. here is the topic and their responses: Explain the customs and traditions of The Gambia to someone who has ... read more

so i typed this whole thing yesterday and it was super long (you'll see by the end). and then when i tried to publish it the internet died. and the entry didn't save. yay my life. so here we go again. Friday afternoon i went on a quest for the Omega church that christian had told me about. i got lost a few times, and finally found some kids who were really excited to show me where it was. they held my hand and ran through the glass-strewn streets barefoot to show me the church. it was closed, but i took down the number. when i got home a boy came over with a backpack full of clothes, and we went shopping. we took shirts to our rooms to try them on. i bought 2 shirts ... read more

as the rainy season approaches it is SO HOT here. i used to have to wear a fleece at night. now i sleep on top of my covers. i forgot to put this in my last entry-on tuesday when mr gaye was talking about pollution, he talked about the dumping ground. for those of you who aren't in the gambia (i guess that's everyone), the dumping ground is literally a giant field full of trash. it's the gambia's version of a landfill. and they burn the trash to get rid of it. this is right next to abc 1. mr gaye was talking about how a lot kids who live around the dumping ground have cancer. and he said it like a matter-of-fact as i sat in the back of the class open-mouthed. so sad. after ... read more
