This trip was a long time coming. Darcy and planned this and booked our flights months ago. We wanted to do something really cool for New Years Eve, and rumor had it, Amsterdam was the place to be. When I visited Noah in Toulon in October, I was yelling at him for not traveling more. Then I invited him to spend NYE in Amsterdam with us. Darcy invited her friend Adam from when she worked at Verizon. Adam booked us a flat to stay in for 5 nights. I was getting there one day early. Three weeks before my trip, I started looking for places to stay for one night on Couchsurfing.com. Unfortunately, every hostel was booked up or had a minimum 3-6-night stay. Plus, couchsurfing is my favorite thing. I sent requests to about 30 ... read more

Christmas is in schools in Hungary. It's a thing. And not just Christmas presents/trees/Santa. Oh no. JESUS. Jesus is schools goes against everything I ever learned about being a teacher. About a month or so ago, I was told that I had to prepare a song/chant/dance/play for my class. Since I have 2 classes, I asked Claire to take over my 1st grade Christmas show while I concentrated on the 3rd graders. I chose a play about reindeer. It's cute, it's Christmasy, it's innocent. We spent all of our English lessons for a week practicing. Singing songs, dancing, and acting. Tunde (my co-teacher) was really worried about their pitch and synchronization and everything. I was just happy they memorized their lines. I've mentioned this in a previous blog, but it's relevant to this blog too. On ... read more

It's that awkward time between Thanksgiving and Christmas. It's the season where I've stopped being homesick, because I'm just really excited to go home in a week (!!!). Half of my kids are slumped over their desks in class, and the other half are out of control. With no Thanksgiving break, the kids have been in school since the beginning of November. Everyone is ready for Christmas. It's also the season of thankfulness and gratefulness. And over this past week, I've been composing a list of the things I am really thankful for, now that I've lived in Europe for three months. Also, my favorite things. 1. The quaint little towns of the French countryside that I got to peek at while on my train from Lyon to Toulon. Rolling green hills, vineyards, and every so ... read more

Europe » Austria » Vienna » Vienna December 9th 2013

Did I get your attention with the title? (I almost wrote "have I got your attention"...British English is killing me.) Darcy and I went to Wien this weekend to see the Christmas markets! And the adjective for Wien is Wiener. So that word was everywhere. Curse my immaturity. But not really. Teehee. After school on Friday we went to what is definitely the sketchiest train station in Budapest, got on our train, had to kick two guys out of our seats, and went to Vienna. WITH NO PROBLEMS. AGAIN. WE'RE SO GOOD AT THIS NOW. The train ride was less than 3 hours. And cheap. Basically I need to go Vienna always. We also bought 48 hour transportation passes. Spoiler alert: We didn't get checked once the whole weekend. Saved us a lot of stress though. ... read more

I. LOVE. PRAGUE. I can't wait to go back to Prague. Prague is like a little clean Budapest. Apparently it's because instead of trying to fight in any wars, they just gave into anyone who has ever tried to take them over. Go Prague. Things Darcy and I did in Prague: 1. WE MADE IT WITH NO MAJOR DISASTERS. FIRST TIME. YES. 2. 7 hour train rides suck, but trains are definitely my favorite way to travel. No bumps, you're able to stand up and stretch, and it's logical unlike planes which are way to heavy to be in the sky (I know blah blah science. I just still don't get it). 3. Our train stopped a bunch, but they never announced any of the stops and Darcy and I were wondering the whole time how ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris November 3rd 2013

When I got on the train to leave Toulon, it was night. We had assigned seats. There was an old Chinese man sleeping in mine. I didn't bother. The train ride was dark and uneventful. I got to Paris and got a cab. The cab driver was super nice and talkative because he was practicing his English. When he dropped me off, he asked if I was married. I couchsurfed the first night because I didn't want to pay for a place to stay from 11:30 pm to 7:00 am. No thanks. Before you all freak out, here's how it works. I put out a request on the website that I'm looking for a place to crash. I can seek out people and send them personal requests and/or people respond to my request. The people who ... read more

Europe » France » Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur » Toulon October 30th 2013

The only way I know what region to choose when I'm writing these blogs is because I know what wine region I was in. France. Wine. Duh. SO. I'm really slacking on these posts, and now I'm going to Prague tomorrow (secret: it's actually November 14, and I'm just lazy and backdated this entry). Toulon. Yes. I went there. I left Lyon at some ungodly hour of the morning. Carine dropped me at the metro where I successfully got myself to the train station and unsuccessfully took three tries to print out my ticket at the machine because when the touchscreen is an inch away from the glass you're touching and there doesn't seem to be a backspace, it takes you about 10 minutes to print out a ticket you already paid for. Also, way too ... read more

Europe » France » Rhône-Alpes » Lyon October 28th 2013

Welcome to the first of a three-part series about my fall break. First of all, how cool is it that I can go to a new country for fall break?? And on the weekends? My life, ladies and gentlemen. SO. On Saturday morning, I woke up and packed for my flight later that day. I left my house earlier than planned because there was nothing to do, and I was antsy. I mean, France. C'mon. I had to buy new phone minutes because I'm responsible and stuff, and then I took a million forms of transportation to get to France. Tram to the Metro to the Bus to the Plane. I sat in the airport FOREVER. Here's the thing I've learned about European airports. In America, what do you see in airports? FOOD. EVERYWHERE. McDonalds, Panda ... read more

I am stupid happy right now. You know when you get in those moods where you're so happy that you don't know what to do with yourself? Well today is just the BEST day. I woke up at 5:30 am after a night of very little sleep. I made a double espresso with my BRAND NEW espresso machine and was out of the flat by 6:30. I went to school in darkness while reading Jane Eyre (finally getting around to it after not reading it in high school). I got to school, put on my mouse costume, and got ready for the party. I dressed up as Ruby from Happy House for my kids' Halloween party. Happy House is my English curriculum, and the students have met a ton of characters (including a mouse named Ruby). ... read more

Europe » Hungary » Northern Great Plain » Debrecen October 20th 2013

Darcy and I suck at traveling together. We always get these great ideas and then we assume that the person who has the idea knows what's going on. This is why we missed our bus to Serbia, and had an interesting time getting to Debrecen this weekend. Background: Debrecen is the second biggest city in Hungary. It's also home to a really big university. It's near the Romanian border, about a 3 hour train ride from Budapest. A few people from CETP live in/near Debrecen, so Darcy and I decided to visit them. It sounds easy. Go to the train station. Buy a ticket to Debrecen. Get on the train. Get off at Debrecen. On the way home repeat but for Budapest. Then you have to remember that it's Darcy and me doing this, so naturally ... read more
