The kids have calmed down a bit since we began... or maybe I'm just getting used to it, I'm not sure haha. It's funny because that's the one English word they ALL know how to say - COME, COME! A couple know please which is nice, but very often you just have them run up to you, take a flying leap for your chest or just grab your hand and pull - come, come! Come, come! Yesterday morning we played outside as per usual - it was too cute. There's one kid that's clearly the leader of the bunch; he's a total ham, but at the same time he's responsable and the one kid that always listens to us. He decided we had to do relay races again (like we'd done on Wednesday), so he organized ... read more

So, first off a bit about our schedule - first week we're with 15 orphans, aged around 6-10yrs, all with either physical or mental disabilities. Second week we're with older kids (11-15ish), but we don't know how many, or if they're disabled. Our daily schedule is usually 9:30-11:30am outside w/ the kids (sometimes 30-60min inside on the comp as well), a well deserved break where we literally eat and then flop out in our rooms, and then 4-6pm we play inside w/ the kids trying to get them to do crafts or stuff like that. Plovdiv is quite warm - and be quite, I mean boiling. I think the lowest it's been here is 30 since we arrived, plus the humidity... so it's toasty. It's fine in the shade I suppose, but we don't often have ... read more

Europe » Bulgaria » Sofia City » Sofia July 4th 2009

I took another lazy day today. I woke up to a bit of thunder, and was not at all motivated to move. Also, I could hear the street dogs barking all last night and wasn't too keen on meeting them in person. So instead, I decided to take today to upload a bunch of photos, organize some travel stuff, and just relax. Oh, and I had no local currency yet, and I didn’t really feel like roaming the streets of Sofia by myself. Sketch. When I went down for supper though, the restaurant was closed. Crap. Looks like I’ll be venturing out today after all haha. Reception was super helpful and nice, telling me how to first find an ATM. (Minor detail) And off I went. It wasn’t too far, about a 15min walk down the ... read more

I had the most bizarre encounter as I left Frankfurt. I truly have skill. Bus ride last night was alright - I didn’t sleep much b/c I’m so excited/nervous about Bulgaria, but I still managed to get 2-3 hours. I hate passport control… again, at 12:30am as we pass into Germany we get the guards. At least they were friendly… but we got stuck there for an hour. Sigh. Rest of the bus ride was uneventful (I talked to 2 American boys for a bit while stuck in controls), and then I had breakfast at the train station before taking the S-bahn to the airport. And that’s where my story begins. I need to stop smiling to strangers in Europe, it doesn’t do me any good. This guy smiles at me, so I smile back. He ... read more

Well, I have finally found a smell worse than the pee-soaked stations… Mustek station in Prague smells like puke. At first I thought ‘man, what bad timing for it to smell this way…’ but no, it’s permanent. I had the misfortune of using the station once yesterday, and then 3x today. Ew. Anyway, on with my day. The plan was to do that 6hr day tour followed by the ghost tour… yeah, didn’t happen. ‘Prague Walks’ can kiss my bum. I show up and the guy is too busy talking with a girl on a segway to even notice I’m there. FINALLY he’s like ‘can I help you?’ I asked about the tour. He noted that I’m alone, and they don’t do them for one person. Ok, but the brochure and online says it’s daily. He ... read more

Sigh, a second year in a row that I miss Canada Day in Ottawa. But that’s ok. Today I enjoyed the ability to sleep in for once (yay for 2 nights in a hotel!) and then I headed out to Kutna Hora, an hour east of Prague. I went to the bus station first to confirm my ticket to Frankfurt for tomorrow night (minor detail considering I have a flight later that day), and then I trekked back to the train station. Again, for an area that sees a considerable amount of tourists, I’m surprised no one I came across understood any English. Maybe I’m just lucky that way… but anyway, “Kutna Hora” is easy enough to say and I had no problem getting the ticket. The ride there was interesting; I shared my compartment with ... read more

Well, last night was interesting. After my bratwurst I metro’d down to the soccer stadium to catch the bus to Prague. I was super not looking forward to this b/c it’s in the middle of nowhere. I get into the station and 4 drunk teenagers show up and start heckling a group of Asians. (Definitely reminded me of Wonderland haha, who wears short shortsssss?) This went on for about 5min before the Asians angrily yelled at them in German to what I can only assume meant “eff off”. I like their ticket checking system here in Munich, much more effective than Ottawa’s. The guards are dressed in street clothes, stand by the doors talking amongst themselves, and then once the doors close they spread out and crackdown. Much better than the OC ones in their ... read more

Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Berchtesgaden June 29th 2009

Ok, I must share my morning experience. I was getting ready when I hear, “house keepiiiiiiiing?” No joke, it sounded exactly like the Family Guy episode where Peter is a maid. He repeated it again, “house keepiiiing?” I actually burst out laughing. Anyway! On to my day. As much as I wanted to see “Mad” Ludwig’s castle, I didn’t want to pay around $100 and get up at 7am to join a tour. So instead, I headed off an adventure into the heart of Bavaria, to Eagle’s Nest - a chalet-retreat house the Nazi Party gave Hitler for his 50th bday. I could’ve joined a tour, but really, who needs that? I figured out how to use the ticket machine, planned my route and off I went! First I took a two hour train ride to ... read more

(Second part of my day) Before I get into everything, I must share my sadness in the fact no one in Europe seems to be aware of the City of Ottawa. I guess I'm not overly surprised, I mean you travel in the States and everyone assumes you're from Toronto, but still... I thought maybe, just maybe that would be different in Europe. But so far, no. When Sophia and I were chatting on the bus ride to Dachau, of course we talked about where we're from. She said Boston, I'm like oh sweet, Massachusetts - nice area. We talked about the city, I noted how they had a good hockey team this year (I'm so Canadian!) etc. She asked where I was from, I'm from Ottawa. *Blank stare* Canada. "Oh yeah, ok. (I split today into two entries since I couldn't exactly link the two parts of my day) I woke up this morning to a very cloudy sky - how fitting it rain the day I go to Dachau. On the S-bahn ride to Dachau I met a girl, Sophia, traveling by herself - she’s from Taiwan, studying in Boston, doing an internship in Bohn, Germany. How epic. We talked pretty much the entire way there and made supper plans for afterwards, as it does get tiresome eating by yourself all the time. (My next entry, or previous depending how they're posted) Dachau is remarkably close to a fair sized city, and the camp itself is gigantic. Literally as soon as the bus pulled up to the camp it started to absolutely POUR rain. We ran to ... read more
