Right, well I misjudged my time today... but I still had a good day. (photos will be added tomorrow. I'm tired) I got up relatively late, but lounged around in the morning anyway. The hostel makes you breakky whenever you get up, so there's no rushing whatsoever. After planning and looking over a few things on my laptop, I headed out to the bus station. Plan was to visit Auschwitz-Birkenau today. Didn't exactly work out as planned...? I took the bus there without a problem - I got there at 2:30pm thinking I'd have plenty of time. Everything I read said you only need 90min per site (Auschwitz, Birkenau), so I figured I'd have no problem making the last bus back at 6:20pm. Or notttttt. Apparently I take my time at these things... which I do. ... read more

Ok - really quick entry right now because I'm on the computer in the lobby of my hostel... the wireless is crap, so I'm going to hunt for a real connection tomorrow so that I can properly update. (ie. hello McDonald's and free wi-fi! oh the joys) Not much to say about today anyway - I was on a train all day from Gdansk to Krakow. There are some details to be said, but I'll add them into tomorrow's update. I'm going to go organize photos now since I have nothing else to do without internet haha. I spent the entire day reading on the train, so I'd like a break from that. Talk to you all tomorrow! ------- Alright, of course right after I send this and check my laptop, the connection is fine. Lovely day today =) Woke up relatively early - my dormies made a lot of noise getting up and leaving - but I managed to fall back asleep. I headed out to Sopot around 10h - a nice little beach-resort about 10min away by the dreaded commuter train. Thankfully, this time there was a lot more space on the train. Weather wasn't really in my favour for the beach - it was supposed to be overcast and spit rain - but I had my bathing suit just in case. I spent a good chunk of time roaming up and down the main street, looking at all the cafes and restaurants. I passed by the church, but didn't go in since I believe there was a mass going on... After lunch I grabbed a gofry - essentially, ... read more

Busy day! I must start by noting there is a daddy-long-leg spider crawling across the floor of the chill-room in the hostel. At least, I hope that’s what it is. Anywho. Check-out was at 11h this morning... and I was so caught up in my dream that I thought my alarm was part of it... and woke up at 10h48. Good thing I packed the night before!! I def checked-out in my pajamas. I win at life. After getting dressed and leaving my backpack in lock-up, I set back out to continue exploring Gdansk. I returned to ul. Dluga area to pick up a few souvenirs and grab some lunch. To do so, I had to fight thru the crowds! There was some kind of festival..? Or perhaps the street vendors are always set up like ... read more

Well, I slept like a rock last night - woke up at 9h, rolled over it was 11h30ish, then it was 12h50. Yep, definitely good to go. Time to get up! As I sat on my bed pondering how to find the clothes in my backpack that I wanted to wear today, I notice two guys walk by my window. Can you say creepy?? (I should note that theyre doing construction on thehostel, and I knew the scaffolding was there. Also, there is no blind to my room.) Good thing I wasn't getting dressed... although I couldn't help but also find it creepy that they could see my sleep if they so chose to. I do have locked windows though - so no worries. Anywho. I trekked down the stairs and headed out for lunch in ... read more

Oh what a long, long day! Flight from JFK to Berlin wasn't bad. I never sleep on flights, so that part was a little sucky. The food on the plan started great... and then I don't know what I had - probably the coleslaw - but I felt beyond ill. Hah. Great way to start. I found in interesting how everyone presumed I was German on the flight... I don't think I look overly German? Each steward(ess) addressed me in German first, followed by blank looks on my part. Even the girl sitting beside me started this epic convo... and I"m lie... English...? Francais? Haha. Landing in Berlin, it was raining and I still felt a little off, so there was no big desire to explore. I did however putter around the Reichstag area and walk ... read more

Alrighty, here we go everyone!! Glad to have you all "travelling" with me again - and those of you who are new to the fray, welcome and enjoy the ride =) I went down to TO with my Dad before the trip which was nice - had some time to relax before heading out on my whirlwind adventure! I flew TO to Newark (gotta love Porter!) and had a good laugh at customs. The only question I got (with a one way flight to NYC) was how long was I staying. I answered I'm leaving that night out of JFK. He stamped my passport and off I went. Way to be thorough? Didn't check my details, nothing. Perhaps I'm too used to crossing by bus and having 10,000 questions thrown your way. Ok, ok enough rambling. ... read more

Hello Europe!

So, plan was to do the zoo today... but that changed due to hour-conflicts. Ahem. I started the day by going to Arlington Cemetery. It's quite the impressive and solemn sight - row, upon row of tombstones. The Cemetery is insanely large to walk around, but I saw most of it. I also watched the Changing of the Guard for the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Afterwards, instead of taking the metro like a normal person, I thought "hey, there's a bridge. I'll just cross over the Potomac River to Washington DC!" thinking that it would bring me RIGHT to the Jefferson Memorial. Yeahhhh. I was wrong. First off, bridge was longer than I thought. Then I realized it brought me to the Lincoln Memorial and that it was another 20min walk to Jefferson, plus another ... read more

Planned on getting up relatively early today... woke up at 7:30am, rolled over, opened my eyes and it was 10:50am. Sigh. I walked down to the Metro again. So hot. Not nearly as humid as yesterday, but still quite steamy. I brought my umbrella in case it rained... boy, was I glad. First things, first. I headed down to the Crime and Punishment Museum! Very cool. This one you actually had to pay for, but it was well worth the $18. I spent almost 3hrs there, and could've spent longer had I done the simulators and such. The museum takes you through the history of crime and punishment, starting in medieval times, pirates, etc. all the way to modern day criminals. Some of it's gruesome (medieval section and the death row part), but it was all ... read more

Holy mother.... it is hot down here. Felt like 46 with humidity today.... ayoye. Plan was to stay inside at the museums... but of course I got stuck in the subway, missed a stop, and then ended up getting off at one end of the National Mall rather than at the middle where I wanted. Not a long walk... but in this weather? Ick. I made the most of it - took pictures of the Capitol from the other side, some statues, etc. and then wandered down the Mall towards the Washington Monument... all the while trying to zig-zag between the occasional tree to get any shade possible. (I'm still impressed I only had a slight sunburn.) I hit up the Natural History Museum (Ottawa's Museum of Nature's got nothing on this one =( ...sigh) and ... read more
