Europe August 9th 2015

Today started really well and then kind of fizzled out for a multitude of reasons lol. On the walk to the Tube (honestly, 5min walk and it's not a touristy area) got stopped twice for directions. This is my first trip I can remember where this hasn't been a daily occurrence... I'm losing my touch ;) I started at the Churchill War Rooms which were fantastic - so much so I'd say it warrants the regular price. It's a two-part museum really: the war-time bunker used by Churchill to run the war decisions and a museum about Churchill as well. They were both equally informative and interesting. It's quite remarkable that he spent most of the war years down in these rooms and yet they weren't actually bomb proof... it was basically a fortified basement, but ... read more

Putting London at the end of my trip was a good idea - end with my honorary home away from home. With the amount of time I've spent here, you'd think I'd have a hostel I'm loyal to but no... this is easily the 10th or 11th hostel I've stayed at. None have been good (and cheap!) enough to solidify the loyalty - let's see how this one does. Saw a funny thing when I got off the Tube... Holy Trinity Church. Now. First stop was Cork - what was the first church I saw there? Holy Trin. And now that I'm in London, my last real stop? First church I see? Holy Trin again. I love it. (Even if it does remind me that September is fast approaching!) Anyway! Brought stuff to my hostel and ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » North Yorkshire » York August 7th 2015

(We can tell I'm getting towards the end of my trip/I'm getting close to London times as I start only doing these every two days.) Yesterday I took the train from Liverpool to York which isn't all that long. It was oddly busy for the middle of the week... I had a reserved seat though, so it didn't matter for me, but still. I was so happy to get to York - I've heard a lot of great things, it's nice to finally come. Also nice to get out of Liverpool - I think I'm just holding a grudge from when I lost my phone last time haha, but anyway. I spent a good chunk of the day at the Museum Gardens, roaming around the park, soaking up the sun (YES SUNLIGHT!) and walking along the ... read more

Not much happened yesterday - it was a travel day - time to pack up and head back to England. As much as I loved my time on the Isle of Man, I'm ready for my next stop because it means one stop closer to return to London which is always a good time. One thing I wasn't ready for was trying to re-pack my bag after all my new purchases, ahem. I really hope my bag survives this trip. The crossing was really rough for the first 1.5hr... like they were going around passing out barf bags type of rough. I never get seasick and I had to sit back with my eyes closed to stay ok. Thankfully the other 1.5hr was smooth sailing. Back in Liverpool I essentially went to my hostel, grabbed dinner ... read more

Europe » Isle of Man August 3rd 2015

Ok best day ever. I went to the Rest Home for Old Horses and stayed there half the day. It's a brilliant place - it was first started as basically a retirement home for the work/tram horses in Douglas and now they have all sorts of beautiful old darlings... along with some donkeys to keep things interesting. (Their names are off memory from looking at pics there... so... take it for what it's worth lol. It's more so that I can remember who was who in the pictures.) The lady who was in the gift shop was super friendly and basically gave me an overview of the place as I bought some food for the horses. She also told me about the oldest horse, Pocket (he's a little skinny - give him all the food he ... read more

Europe » Isle of Man » Castletown August 2nd 2015

Right, so I've found a place that rivals rural Wales for its quietness on a Sunday - there is no one out and nothing is open haha. I mean the heritage places are still open, and some stores in Douglas have very limited hours, but wow is it ever quiet. I took the bus to Castletown - on the way I noticed we passed the "Old Horse Sanctuary" which I need to google when I'm back at my BnB tonight. I haven't been horseback riding in forever - I'd very much settle for an hour looking at pretty horses and feeding them. Castletown is quiet enough on a weekday lol, so there was nothing going on today. I wandered along the bay - nothing special, just a lot of Arctic terns and swans which I guess ... read more

Lazy morning today - I kept putting laundry off and today was the day I could wait no more. Off to the local laundrette I went and it was oddly fun..? The owner was super chatty - she just moved here from Manchester last year and so we talked about how great the Isle is. She was also surprised I'd found the place since it's pretty much local regulars. I'm just special. Laundry done I headed off to Snaefell. It's supposed to rain the rest of my time here so I wanted to make sure I got it done today. I took the electric rail to Laxey (they still use the original historic tramcars from the 1890s!) which was great fun. Not the most comfortable thing, mind you, but again just fun to experience and hear ... read more

Breakfast in a BnB is hilarious just to hear all the old people chatter... even more so considering everyone is British. I think my fav this morning was a wife trying to explain to her husband what a cassowary is - "It's a bit like an ostrich gone wrong." Well... she's not wrong. And God the jokes. Hilarious that is until they started talking about immigration, ahem. Boy do the claws come out and a lot of hatred starts getting spewed... Anyway, on to happy things. Another charming thing about Isle of Man is their heritage in regards to transportation. They still have an old steam train, an electric mountain tram and an electric railway running regular service along with horse drawn trams. Come on now. I took the steam train today - very busy since ... read more

Europe » Isle of Man » Peel July 30th 2015

Yeah... Isle of Man has cracked my top three... sorry Germany, you fall to #4. Splendid weather today - I was going to go up Snaefell (their only real mountain), but the rail schedule is all funny today because of their "railway festival" so... hopefully there's another sunny day during my visit. Instead I went to Niarbyl and Peel. Bus ride was fun - it was basically a glorified mini van hahaha... but comfortable as anything you'd get on a real bus. Staying in Douglas is great because nothing is really more than 60-90min away. The driver was funny - it was his first time doing the route and didn't quite know where to drop us off. He asked if any of us had been on this route before - no, sadly the German family, the ... read more

Europe » Isle of Man » Douglas July 29th 2015

The more I learn about the Isle of Man, the more excited I am to explore about for the next few days. Took a taxi to the dock this morning in Belfast - somehow my name turned into Nellie (which totally sounds like Julie). Which I suppose is better than my boarding pass for the ferry which simply said lol. The taxi driver was very chatty - of course we discussed weather, my next stop on the trip and what I do back home. The usual. The ferry ride was nice and smooth. I took the time to watch some shows on my laptop (Charlie Cox is adorable as Daredevil, just sayin') and just take in the scenery. Today is a splurge day, for I took a taxi from the ferry to my hotel as well ... read more
