Had a lazy morning and got more washing done. In the evening we visited a local biker friendly bar run by friends of our host. The owner of the bar is also a good musician. There was a musician playing that was a bit of an Elvis lookalike. He was a new performer that the owner, Jerry, was trying out. He was very good. We left the bar about 7pm and drove to a lake house owned by our hosts. Shame it was not a bit warmer, but a lovely place to relax. ... read more

Visited an elderly friend of our hosts and also their daughter, both of who live locally. Visited Dallas Fort Worth today where they were hosting a cattle show. It was quite a bit warmer, so it was nice to walk around and see all the characters and shops. We completed the maze in about 17 minutes. Felt like big kids, but it was very enjoyable for us and for our hosts who decided that to watch would be more fun. Went for a traditional steak meal in the evening. ... read more

Went to South Fork where they filmed ‘Dallas’ George has always dreamed about visiting this site and we both really enjoyed the visit. Our guide was very knowledgeable of the show and also had the normal American enthusiasm. As the weather was still fairly cold, we did not spend too long exploring the outside. ... read more

Woke up this morning and were relived to find we had moved out of the snow. Arrived in Dallas an hour early after an uneventful journey. Our friends arrived to pick us up as we got there. Had a relaxing afternoon doing washing and a little bit more shopping – we will definitely need the extra suitcase we brought with us. We are now 6 hours behind English time. ... read more

Our train journey to Chicago went really well. We both managed to get a decent sleep last night. The weather outside is snow and ice which we had all the way out of Chicago. Food on board was excellent and restaurant standard. Nothing like good old British Rail. Had a three hour wait in Chicago before boarding another overnight Texas Eagle train to Dallas. Smaller cabin with no storage space so we are a little cramped, but still enjoyed it. A double decker train. ... read more

Woke up this morning to find there had been more snow overnight and it was still falling. Today we start our overnight train journeys from New York to Dallas. As we do not need to check out until 12.00, the packing got done this morning. As we had bought quite a lot whilst here in New York, we now have 6 cases instead of the original 5, so a taxi it will be to Penn Station. After packing, we nipped to the local deli for breakfast. We managed to miss all the slidy bits, but George did end in a rather deep puddle that looked like ice from a distance. Got to the station in plenty of time, and spent a few hours in the executive lounge relaxing. On the train from New York to Chicago ... read more

Today marks the day when we have been out of work for one month. We have achieved so much in that month and have not stopped. As the weather is so cold, we decided to go on some bus rides today. One around downtown New York and one around uptown. The tours are traditionally on open top buses, but they put plastic roofs on them when it is cold, but we underestimated how cold this would make the bus. We completed the downtown tour and then had to get off to defrost. It was seriously cold. We then decided that it would be silly to continue with the uptown tour as we were struggling to get warm without getting cold again. We went on a short shopping trip in Times Square, but even that had to ... read more

Had a restful day today. Went to pick up our train tickets and check that we understood where to enter into the station. Did some shopping and picked up some essential supplies ready for the train journey, which it turned out we would not need. ... read more

New York roads are numbered in a very logical way. Avenues go north / south starting at 1 to the east. Streets go east to west starting at 1 to the south. Broadway goes from south east to north west of the city, crossing a lot of the streets and avenues. Our hotel is on 49th Street between 7th and 8th avenue. Today we took the subway to 110th Street. We were looking for a farmers market that we had been to in this area before, but were informed that it was on a Friday not Saturday. 110th Street is the north side of Central Park. The snow here seems to be a lot thicker than it does on the other side of the park. Had a chance to walk though some fresh snow and watch ... read more

Had eggs and sliced fried potatoes for breakfast in a local deli. Very filling and tasty. Visited a local farmers market this morning. Food looks very good, but seems a bit expensive. Walked from there back up Broadway towards the hotel – about 3 miles in total. Stopped off at Lush (bath bomb shop) so that Theresa could top up on bath bombs etc. No one else makes them quite the same. Visited Penn Station so that we could see where we are going from when we catch the train to Dallas via Chicago next week. Went into a couple of the shops in the fashion district but have so far managed to resist the temptation to buy anything. Temperature is again very cold. Went to Planet Hollywood for dinner. ... read more
