We caught crabs. Not the sort you catch when you get too close and personal with the wrong sort of people. We caught blue swimmer crabs this morning using the skeletons of our King George whiting from yesterday and borrowed crab nets. We caught sixteen crabs of legal size. We probably caught another thirty undersized crabs but let them go. It was a lovely morning, sunny and still, so we joined the throngs on Busselton Jetty and tried our luck. We seemed to be the luckiest of the crab catchers today. And we had a great time. We proudly showed our catch when people asked. It is so much more fun when you are being successful. Frank had slightly less fun because he was nipped a couple of times. We went for a drive down to ... read more

Fish. Today was a fish day. This morning, after a leisurely breakfast, we went for a long walk along an even longer jetty. It was interesting to stop along the way to see what all the fisher people had caught. We were costed by a group of boys wanting to sell us some of their crabs. They were being offered to us at $2.50 each, which we declined. Frank said he would pay one dollar each, which the boys accepted, saying that if we bought ten, we could have twelve. What a salesman! We left the jetty without any. Apparently it is illegal for them to be selling crabs, because that would make them commercial fisherman. You live and learn. Further along we chatted with a woman and her elderly father. They were catching garfish and ... read more

The Margaret River region, south of Busselton is renowned for its wineries and coastal scenery. Today, with Christine and Richard as our tour guides, we went for a tour of the very expensive holiday homes in the coastal hamlets, spectacular coastline and several of the better-known wineries. At Saracen Winery and Duckstein Brewery, the boys tasted the brewed product, while Christine and I couldn’t resist the temptation of coffee and a shared piece of lime and tequila tart. Yummy. We are thinking we might go back for lunch in the next couple of days. Voyager Winery is something else. Built in 2001, in Cape Dutch style, Voyager has spectacular landscaped gardens with manicured lawns and beautiful rose gardens. We didn’t sample the wines because we were there late in the day, but I do recommend it ... read more

So, in my last entry I discussed amenities in caravan parks. One further comment before I move on. The amenities block in Horrocks Beach Caravan Park is visited by large green beetles at night. They are a very pretty shade of green, almost emerald, and about 3cm in length. In the morning they have departed, are dead or cleaned up. On our last morning, I was having a shower, when I felt something in my foot. Looking down, I was horrifed to see one of these beetles crawling across my foot. This makes for a very unpleasant showering experience. When it happened a second time, I decided that was the best message I could get to cut my shower short, and beat a hasty retreat. The amenities block at Horrocks Beach Caravan Park wins no stars ... read more

Wildflowers, pretty wildflowers everywhere. Flowers of many different species and colours. Our trip today was highlighted by the beautiful wildflowers that Western Australia is famous for. We stopped several times to take photos, and each time we were amazed at the variety in a small area. We were also surprised to find wild budgies in the area. School holdays start this weekend, so there is a lot more traffic on the road. We are staying at Horrocks Beach for a couple of nights and are really feeling the cooler temperature. The caravan park we are staying at is across the road from the beach, so we can hear the waves crashing on the beach. It is a small park, and a bit more rustic to what we have become accustomed to. But I think we might ... read more

We arrived at Carnarvon in the early afternoon, set up, had lunch and set out to the One Mile Jetty for some fishing. I don’t know if it is really one mile long, but it was a very long walk to the end, so I guess it is. The jetty was built in 1897 and is a bit on the rickety side. There is a train track running the full length, with a little train to take sight-seers who don’t want to walk to the end. The end of the jetty is over a deep channel and is the most popular local fishing spot. We are getting good at good at this fishing thing. Well I am having more success in catching fish, while Frank is getting a lot of experience taking fish of my line ... read more

We are thoroughly enjoying our time in Exmouth. We have had four days here, and both agree that it is somewhere we would happily holiday for a longer period of time. Exmouth, with Cape Range National Park and Ningaloo Reef on one side of the peninsula and Exmouth Gulf on the other, has so much to offer holiday makers. Navy Jetty, which is a working jetty owned by the Department of Defence, is rated as one of the top ten dive sites in the world. We are told that the marine life there is amazing, but it is a restricted site available only to certified dive tours. No snorkelling there for us. There are fishing charters providing a game fishing experience. For the more casual holiday makers like us, the are many sites to fish from ... read more

We had a couple of close calls today, and one small disaster. The first close call was out on Ningaloo Reef. We went out on a reef viewing and snorkelling tour in a glass bottom boat. It is a great way to experience the reef. A few minutes after starting snorkelling, I glanced over to my right to see a shark swimming past me. I took a second to panic and swam straight back to the boat. The crew reassured me that it was probably a reef shark and not to worry. They did appear a little surprised though. I only saw the back half; so really don’t know what it was. It wasn’t until the tour was almost over that the tour leader informed us that there were five metre tiger sharks on the reef. ... read more

Who would have thought the gentle pursuit of caravanning and camping could be so dangerous. First of all there is the risk of dying of boredom being the passenger while traveling from point A to point B or C or D etc. If you can survive that, then you must contend will everything Mother Nature throws at you. At Fitzroy Crossing, warnings had been posted about Singapore ants, tiny ants that would get into everything, so they recommended spraying around table and chair legs and even the wheels with ant spray to guard against them. At Turkey Creek/Warnum, we had to contend with bulls marauding through the van park. At Wycliffe’s Well there was a not to friendly donkey roaming around freely. In Karijini National Park, campers were warned about wild dingos, and told not to ... read more

We are back from the wilderness. Well not quite wilderness, Karijini National Park in Western Australia’s Pilbara region. One of the doctors at work said we mustn’t miss it and he was right. What a beautiful place it is. Red hills and escarpments, rich in iron ore, dotted with clumps of spinifex and elegant white trunked ghost gums. The park features several gorges, some of which we visited and some we missed out on. We really wanted to go to Hammersly Gorge a two hundred kilometre return trip to the far north corner of the park, but when we got out to the turn-off, there was a sign stating that the road was closed for construction. Disappointed, we paid a visit to Weano Gorge for a picnic lunch and a short walk to a couple of ... read more
